Default Denver interested in Harrington to backup Jake; talking with Detroit; salary an issue

denver broncos notes
Harrington drawing interest from Denver
Broncos discussing deal for Detroit quarterback as backup

Orlando, Fla. - Count the Broncos among the teams interested in lame-duck Detroit quarterback Joey Harrington.

The Broncos and Lions have had preliminary discussions about Harrington, Detroit general manager Matt Millen said. However, Millen said he isn't optimistic a deal with Denver will be struck.

The primary stumbling block in a Detroit-Denver trade would be finances. Harrington is believed to be seeking more than $2 million per season, more than Denver is likely to pay for a backup quarterback. Also, Harrington may want to play where he has a chance to compete for a starter's job. However, Harrington, a former No. 3 overall pick, has expressed interest in playing for Broncos coach Mike Shanahan, who is known for his offensive success.

Millen said he is hopeful the Lions will be able to trade Harrington and that he has talked to six or seven teams. If not traded, Harrington will be released in June. He is due a large bonus June 15. Miami and Kansas City are among the suitors.

For the second consecutive season, Denver is entertaining the notion of acquiring a veteran backup quarterback. The team is happy with the progress of current backup Bradlee Van Pelt, but Shanahan has said there will be competition in training camp.

In the past two weeks, Denver has given offers to veterans Gus Frerotte and Mike McMahon, but both opted to take more money and better playing opportunities elsewhere. Frerotte signed with St. Louis and McMahon with Minnesota.

Denver picks up a pick

The Broncos didn't get the two compensatory draft picks they were hoping for, but they added a fourth-round pick in the April draft.

The NFL, which doled out just one third-round compensatory choice Monday, gave Denver the second-highest compensatory pick. It now has the 130th overall choice and 33rd pick in the fourth round.

Denver has eight picks overall, including three fourth-rounders.

It does not have picks in the third or seventh rounds. Denver was hopeful it would get two choices for the 2005 losses of unrestricted free agents Reggie Hayward, Kenoy Kennedy and Donnie Spragan.
"We thought we'd get more, but we're happy with getting an extra pick," Denver general manager Ted Sundquist said. "That never hurts."

Pope joining the Jets

Free-agent defensive tackle Monsanto Pope agreed Monday to a one-year, $585,000 deal with the Jets that includes a $40,000 signing bonus, said his agent, Ron Del Duca.

Pope, a seventh-round pick in the 2002 draft, is the first Denver unrestricted free agent to leave the team this offseason. He was a starter in 2004, but rarely played last season after the Broncos upgraded their line. Denver has two remaining free agents, linebacker Patrick Chukwurah and safety Chris Young. Chukwurah will decide between the Broncos and the Buccaneers, and Young is not likely to return.

49ers celebrate old times

Shanahan participated in a celebration held by former 49ers owner Eddie DeBartolo in Las Vegas over the weekend. DeBartolo honored all the employees who were part of his five Super Bowl-winning teams.

Shanahan was the 49ers' offensive coordinator on the 1994 team.

The Chiefs have been interested in Harrington for a while now. I can't say I'm totally opposed, but he needs work.

I don't believe he will be traded, either.

BVP just left the club - he was looking over my shoulder and has left the bar with a bag of footballs, his work out clothes, and 2 gallons of whiskey. He's on it!

I dont see how he could be traded even if something were worked out between the teams for compensation. The new team would absorb the terms of his contract and therefore be on the hook for that late June bonus. No one is going to take that.

I'd presume if he was traded he'd have to agree to re-work that deal, but in all honesty if anyone didn't think Harrington is an upgrade over Van Pelt they're dilusional.

This is just like the TO deal. Harrington and his agent are sitting tight knowing they can get more money on the open market instead of agreeing to a trade and re-negotiating Harrington's deal.

I think Denver is chasing some camp competition for BVP. Harrington would be like having immobile Jake out there - he just insn't consistent. I would pass on him and chase something else like Doug Flutie - woot!, Vinny Testaverde, or Ty Detmer ....

wait, sign Harrington NOW!

I dont think there will be too much of a difference. People will probably be willing to pay him 1 million this year and not substantially more this year, either way.

No one is going to give him a 2 million base salary this year to be a backup, even in a bidding war. It'll just come down to where he is more comfortable going. I dont think there will be a substantial difference in the salary offers.

I'm just talking about the bonus.

Anyone think KC might have a nice advantage since Harrington would have a real chance to be the heir apparent?

Actually Harrington has solid mobility. He's pretty quick.

He was what the 2nd overall choice? I wonder how much he made these last years, for, well, basically sucking?

And he's asking for 2 million to be backup plus a chance to start? Good Lord!

This guy has more balls than brains.

I hope we stay the hell away from a 1st round QB.

It looks bad for Joey in a Broncs uni:

Detroit general manager Matt Millen said. However, Millen said he isn't optimistic a deal with Denver will be struck.

Salaries are a lot more reasonable in the mid of the first round. Top 5 picks are always overpaid.

But BVP is the backup, why would Shanny want to try to upgrade?

Apparently it's ok to bring in a backup to compete with BVP but sacriledgious to do it with Plummer.

I think that persuing a quality backup in FA precludes the Broncos from targeting a QB in the early rounds.

This could be a good answer to keep us from drafting a QB in the first round.
Keep him for a year, if he shows promise keep him, if not let him go.
Move BVP to Slash.
