Source: Hawks in mix to trade for Abraham
BY KEN BERGER NEWSDAY Pursuing his desire to be traded right at the outset of free agency, New York Jets defensive end John Abraham will visit four teams interested in a sign-and-trade deal with the Jets in the coming days, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. The plan is for Abraham to visit the Seattle Seahawks, Denver Broncos, Atlanta Falcons and Cleveland Browns, said the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity. The Jets have two weeks to work out a trade before Abraham loses his right to negotiate with other teams as per his franchise player designation. While the person said speculation that the Jets and Broncos were close to a deal Friday was premature, there have been strong indications in recent days that Denver has emerged as the front-runner for Abraham, a three-time Pro Bowl player. As a prelude to trading Abraham, the Jets would sign him to a long-term contract negotiated between his agents and the team that is acquiring him. Once the contract is signed, Abraham would have to be traded the same day. That way, the signing bonus would not accelerate against the Jets' salary cap. Instead, the money would be prorated against his new team's salary cap. The 6-foot-4, 258 pound Abraham has 531/2 career sacks in six NFL seasons. He had 101/2 sacks last season, when he forced a career-high six fumbles. Abraham, who has played his entire career with the Jets, made the Pro Bowl after the 2001, 2002 and 2004 seasons. He had a career-high 13 sacks in 2001. The 2005 season was his third with at least 10 sacks. The Seahawks' starting defensive ends last season were Bryce Fisher and Grant Wistrom. Fisher led the team with nine sacks, but Wistrom had just four. Wistrom has just 71/2 sacks in two seasons with the Seahawks and hasn't had more than 71/2 sacks in any season since 2000, when he played for the St. Louis Rams. |

He'll visit Denver second and only head back to NY to get his stuff. Denver will get him sometime this week, you just watch.

While the Jets' Abraham is likely to visit next week, the team is also trying to court San Francisco's Carter, the son of former Denver nose tackle Rubin Carter.
Carter was in Washington on Saturday night, and there were indications the Redskins were determined to reach an agreement before he left town. Carter also is getting interest from Oakland. The Broncos' interest in Carter, who like Abraham is a pass- rush specialist, is another indication a trade for Abraham is not a done deal. Abraham, the Jets' franchise player, would likely command a long-term deal that would eat up at least $3 million to $4 million of Denver's salary cap for 2006. The Broncos have two first-round picks, the No. 22 and 29 selections, and could use one in a trade for Abraham. |

bring on AC, he'll be alot better value wise than Abraham
if we sign AC(who to me is the push rushing version of Courtney Brown, potential but hasn't played up to it yet) that allows the Broncos to keep both 1sts & makes it easier for draft day trades or allows for them to address other areas that we need instead of losing one 1st & forking over 4-7 mil a year |

If we wanted 4 sacks a year we could have kept Pryce if he would lessen the salary. |

Let's not tie up money in John. Go for draft choices.

2001: 7 2002: 13 2003: 7 2004: 2 2005: 5 In '04 he was hurt and only started 7 games. In '05 he moved to OLB in a 3-4 scheme. So how exactly is he "4 sacks a year"? He put up 27 in three years playing for the 49ers, you put him on a good line with some quality linebackers and he's an explosive pass rusher that costs us a fraction of what Abraham will, and saves our 1st rounder. Bring Rubin's boy home Shanny. Make it happen! My favorite part about the Carter news isn't that we're interested, its that we're interested and the two competing teams are the Redskins and Raiders, both teams with cap issues even after the new deal. |

I like Abraham, but I think bringing in Carter would be the smarter move.

To me Abraham is a slight downgrade from neil smith. Expensive, but with results. I hope we get em.
It seems like we already have too many bubble/uproven players on the line. We dont need carter to add to the list. Abraham gets to the qb, period. I am leary of his refusal to play in the playoffs, but am giving him the benifit of the doubt. |

It's nice to know Abraham has a competent agent.
Last year, the Broncos gave Trevor Pryce permission to shop himself around and over the course of three months his agent contacted a grand total of...no-one. This is what you do when you want your clent to get the best deal he can. it would seem Trevor's agent & Arbahams' solicitor went to different schools...or have a slightly variant level of work ethic. |

one thing asbout Abraham that scares me....... last year or the year before he was injuried but could have played , said no he has to think of his future .... he let his team down , seems kinda like a slap in the face to a Al wilson , rod Smith , and some others we have on this team .........

Wabbit, I for one would value your opinion on the Carter vs. JA debate. Is there anything else that is going on that you care to share? Thanks |

I can only tell you the basic substance of several discussions I've had on the subject, but it does include opinion from the San Francisco media.
I have a problem with the character issues that have dogged Abraham. Some of it is exaggerated, but questions about his work ethic linger. I'm just not sure you can sink a hefty slice of your cap ina guy you can't count on. Andre Carter is the son of a Bronco favorite son, Rubin Carter. While he hasn't lived up to his draft hype, you have to look at the team with which he is currently employed. Shanahan wanted to move up to get him, but couldn't muster the resources at the time, so the full-court-press pursuit of Carter seems more likely than Abraham, frankly. The Broncos will visit with Abarham this next week...or shortly thereafter, where Shanahan will get a read on his attitude & salary demands. In the end, it will come down to a balance of investment vs. reward. |

Does anyone know if Carter wants to play DE or LB? Didn't the current regime in SF have him standing up this year?

He was well enough to play, I'll give you that. Atleast, that's what the Doctors said. But, he was under a franchise tag and had he injured that knee again he would likely have been released and then got a chickenshiat deal in FA. Sometimes these players have to look out for themselves. If he's under a long term contract that has some guarantees you'll get his A game each and every week. Screw him around with money and he's going to look out for #1... like each and everyone of us should do! |

from the post today
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...031100869.html Need to do the free register thing for the rest of the story: "The Redskins have long sought a prolific pass rusher to aid their already stout defense, and Carter, the seventh overall pick by San Francisco in 2001, would fill that role. He posted 12˝ sacks in his second NFL season, can also play linebacker in a 3-4 system and, at age 26, could be entering his prime. His father, Rubin, is a former position coach with Washington, and is now head coach at Florida A&M." |
