Fed-up Vikings working on trading Culpepper

Jay Glazer / FOXSports.com
Posted: 6 minutes ago

One day after Vikings quarterback Daunte Culpepper announced that he was asking out of Minnesota, the Vikings are looking to grant his request.

FOXSports.com has learned the Vikings have decided to trade Culpepper and stepped up their efforts Thursday in an attempt to trade him immediately after the start of free agency.
Culpepper has infuriated people inside the Vikings organization by making his gripes public and refusing to mesh with new coach Brad Childress.

Team sources claim they have reached out to Culpepper many times, asking him to return to the Twin Cities to rehab his torn knee with the team and learn Childress' system. Culpepper has refused, often citing unhappiness with his contract.

But an e-mail from Culpepper to reporters Wednesday pushed team officials over the edge to the point that they have now made the decision to move him. In fact, the team's relationship with Culpepper has deteriorated to the point that if the Vikings can't trade him before he is due his $6 million bonus later this month, they intend to ask him to push back that bonus date in order to continue to work toward a trade.

"If a trade does not happen then I am asking the Vikings to terminate my contract as soon as possible," Culpepper said in the e-mail.

Culpepper said he had asked the Vikings if he could speak to interested teams on his own behalf. He said Minnesota denied his request.

"However, because of the fundamental differences I have with management regarding the approach to my personal and professional life, I think it is the best business decision for both parties to go our separate ways," Culpepper said.

A few teams that could be interested in Culpepper include Oakland, Baltimore, Arizona and St. Louis among others.

Culpepper's status with the team has been in question ever since a boat party scandal on Lake Minnetonka in September. He was charged with several misdemeanors for lewd conduct; Culpepper has said he is innocent and will fight the allegations in court.

Further complicating Culpepper's situation is his continued recovery from a knee injury. Culpepper missed most of last season after tearing three ligaments in his right knee during an Oct. 30 game against Carolina, calling into question whether he will be ready for the start of the 2006 season.

Even before the injury, Culpepper was having one of his worst seasons as a pro.

He threw twice as many interceptions (12) as he did touchdowns (six) during the Vikings' 2-5 start. After he went down with the injury, backup Brad Johnson guided the Vikings to six straight wins, though that was due as much to an improved defense as it was Johnson's play.

Culpepper signed a 10-year, $102 million contract in 2003, but much of that money was not guaranteed. He restructured his contract during training camp last season to give him nearly $8 million more in guaranteed money.

More than $24 million under the salary cap, the Vikings have plenty of money to go after a quarterback in free agency. But it's a weak class for quarterbacks, headlined by Drew Brees and Jon Kitna.

Would that just move the drama to the west coast? They do have a much bigger pond out there on which they can have boat parties. But Greasy Al doesn't care what his players do except at practice and on gamedays.

Maybe he should also get TO and that would just fix that whole team up real good.

Cool, we can benefit from his terminal case of fumbleitis.

How soon would Moss have to retract his whole "Kerry Collins throws a much better ball than Culpepper" comment from last season….I remember the media throwing that one in Culpepper's face and he was none too happy about it.

Dante can play. In no way does him going to the Raider equal a good thing. I wasn't worried about Moss with Collins in there. I am with this guy.

Daunte doesn't like Moss

why do you think they traded him in Minnesota?

I was watching the clips of the owners talking about the CBA being worked on and they were showing Greasy Al. Does he have herpes or something? Anyone else ever notice that he always has sores around his mouth?

The man looks like a funkadelic crypt-keeper.

The best way to help our Dline is to get guys like him to play QB twice a year. Fumbling, big guy with one good leg. I love it.

does anybody think the Raiders are as ridiculous as I do? They have a top 10 pick nearly every year, yet their team is always in a shambles. Most Denverfans would give a left nut to be in the top 10. The funniest thing I've seen recently on a raiduh-fansite is them COMPLAINING about ONLY having the 7th pick......uh...that should be enough, you freakin' dungbags.

PLEASE trade for Culpepper, Al. We need more comedy in this division....

They are ridiculous. They are in a position to get vince young, Leinart and Jay cutler. they could groom one of these players and it would help them out in the long end. Culppeper is a good qb, but for how long, and he dosn't get along with Moss anyway. Culppeper is a concer now with that injury/surgery from last year. That's the turds for you, passing on good oppurtunities.

No they're not. Sitting in the 7 spot they maybe have a shot at Vince Young, who's going to suck IMO.

BPA when the Raiders pick will probably be Vernon Davis.

Cullpepper to oakland while not making them a much better team, would give us a hard time.

Trading for Culpepper would mean they could draft somebody like Mario Williams or Hawk even if one of the big three QBs is still on the board. Either one of those guys would immediately improve their defense.

It is also quite a leap to say that Culpepper is a "concer" because of one injury. This is the guy that put up 4,700 yards and 39 TDs in 2004 right?

Its also the same guy that tossed 12 ints in 7 games and was sack another 12 times. Didn't he have 7 fumbles to go with that? On the ESPN page it says he only had 1 but I know he had more then that. I have a hard time wanted guys after a acl or mcl injury, this guy had a mcl, acl, and a pcl. Let the Raiders get him and chance that he can comeback strong from that type of an injury.

He has a career QB rating over 90, a TD:INT ratio that is almost 2:1, a career completion percentage that is almost 65%, and a 7.73 YPA ratio. The only reason this could possibly be a bad move for Oakland is because of the bad blood between Moss and Culpepper. Culpepper has been a good QB in the NFL, and one injury plus one bad stretch of seven games does not mean he all of a sudden sucks.

Since Art Shell is back maybe the Raiders should try Jay Schroeder or Todd Marijuanavich. I hear they are still looking for work.

He looked pretty avg without the games biggest deep threat, and no pro bowl center. Also this isn't just one minor injury, its a pretty wicked one. All three CL's man in one shot.
