Default Salary Cap Deadline Pushed to 11-00pm Eastern

http://www.rockymountainnews.com/drm...525289,00.html

Another deadline delayed in NFL labor talks

NFL future getting tense
By Dave Goldberg, Associated Press
March 8, 2006
GRAPEVINE, Texas — The NFL delayed another deadline on Wednesday.
A little more than two hours before the latest deadline to accept or turn down the NFL Players Association's offer to extend the labor agreement, the owners pushed it back again. This time they extended the deadline for teams to get under the salary cap by two hours, from 9 p.m. EST until 11 p.m.

With that, the owners kept talking as they tried to resolve the sticky issue of expanded revenue sharing that has tied them up for two years. The additional money it would generate is considered the best way the owners can accede to the union's request for just less than 60 percent of the league's total revenues.

NFL spokesman Joe Browne, in announcing the deadline change, said it was made to give additional time to reach agreement on the complicated plans on which they are working. The 8 p.m. EST deadline for informing the union whether the owners accept or reject their proposal stands, although there was some question whether the league might be switching time zones — Gene Upshaw, the executive director of the players union was in Hawaii, where 8 p.m. would be 1 a.m EST.
The owners' marathon meeting started Tuesday and ended with labor peace nowhere in sight.

Earlier Wednesday, there was still clearly no consensus.

Jerry Jones of Dallas, the leader of the group opposing revenue sharing, said he was dismayed by developments. Indianapolis' Jim Irsay, one of the spokesmen for the low-revenue teams that want help from the richer teams suggested the league needed a consensus builder like the late Wellington Mara of the New York Giants, the last of the NFL's founding generation, who died last October.

"We need the ghost of St. Wellington to appear with some of the forefathers," Irsay said.

Despite the latest delay, free agency, twice delayed, is still scheduled to begin Thursday at 12:01 a.m. EST if owners turn down the union's offer. If they approve it, free agency will start Friday.

Meanwhile, there was as much lobbying going on as discussion.

At the lunch break, Mara's son John, along with Jerry Richardson of Carolina and Pat Bowlen of Denver met with commissioner Paul Tagliabue in an attempt to find a way to build a consensus. All three are considered "league" men, owners who will do what they think is best for the league, something Tagliabue urged during Tuesday's session.

They seemed to be aligned, somewhat surprisingly, with Oakland's Al Davis, a maverick with a long history of court fights with the league. "I love my country and I love my league," Davis said repeatedly.

Maybe I'm just pessimistic but if they've extended the cap deadline by 2 hrs it must mean they dont anticipate a deal being done, instead of saying no and giving teams 1 hour to get under the cap looks like they're now giving them 3 hrs, Hope to hell I'm wrong though.

I dunno I'm going to stay optimistic I'll just hope they're extending the deadline because they feel they convince enough to get the deal done. It's only hope though... sigh...

Jerry Jones doesn't want to share his money with anyone and doesn't care how much he has to pay in salaries. Looks like a few greedy owners could screw up the whole thing.

As far as I understand from that though the original decision is still scheduled for 10 minutes time.

Or you could say if some owners would do a better job of marketing thier team they could make more money in their markets and not need Jerry Jones' money. I dont think Jerry Jones' or any of the owners should be punished for running a good franchise. Why should they give the Vikings any money while they sit 24 million under the cap. You think if the AZ Cardinals get more money they are going to spend it on players. No they are gonna pocket the money and go about their business.

They just said that things are really optimistic and they are getting close to agreeing. But of course it's still very complicated.

I think I tend to side with the owners who are on high end of revenues over the ones that want a peice of thier pie. It would be differnt if the buy in was the same for every franchise but just look at how much more Bob Mcnair and Dainel Synder had to pay to purchase a franchise Vs. what Ziggi Wilif had to pay to get the Vikings. The others took a greater risk and have a larger investment therefore they should be making more money. Smaller risk lower investment less of a return on your money. Seems simple to me, but no you have owners who want a big peice of the pie without the investment.

A little more complicated than that. Not a lot of these owners fault that they don't have teams in the major markets and it's in the leagues best interest overall to have a competitive league.

Why isn't it their fault ? They bought the teams didn't they? If they put up the money guys like Snyder, Mcnair, and Jones did then im sure they would expect to make a little more money than they guy who invested a couple of hundread million less.

I would feel alittle less sorry for them if they were spending the money they were already sharring but go down the list and the Raiders are pretty much the only "small market" team that spends their cap.

Ziggy paid less because of market size and the fact it's a crap venue. He's committed to 1 billion in funding for the stadium/commercial complex. I'm not sure if that even covers the land costs.

WTF is Upshaw doing in Hawaii, using his requent flyer miles?

Exactly you pay less and therefore are probably gonna make less. Now say he invests more money and gets a new stadium etc. then there is a good chance he will start to make more money.
