I don't see how this will help the union. The owners can unilaterally share the revenue amongst themselves, and because the maj of owners in small markets can force their will on the big markets, so long as they pick of a couple of the big guys, I'd think they can work out the share/mix. Since they're all making out like bandits already, I have a hard time seeing 5 or more of them going insane and spending 150 million on a bunch of older players and hoping to win a Lombardi.

there are going to be a lot of players cut today.....and they won't be signed for more money, that is for sure, with only 4 year deals available

I'm going to tune this out and just focus on March Madness because I'm upset w/ the Players Union and Tags and his cronies.

Thank god for college basketball, I dont know what I would do if there wasn't any college ball.

So if there is not a new contract in place for 2008 and beyond, will there be a chance of a lockout in 2008?

NEW YORK (AP) -- NFL owners voted unanimously Thursday to break off talks with the players' union on a contract extension, leaving the current salary cap in place with the start of free agency looming -- and possibly forcing the mass dumping of veterans.

The owners, who met for 57 minutes Thursday morning, endorsed a recommendation by their management council executive committee to reject the union's latest proposal.......

not only is there a chance

it WILL happen in 2008 if a new CBA isn't instituted

if the owners can't agree on revenue sharing, then how are they all going to agree on a lockout?

it's way too early to tell at this point...

rules for the uncapped year....the players will probably strike before the owners would lock them out.

UNCAPPED YEAR 101

Assuming that the powers-that-be can't get a new CBA hammered out by Friday, and assuming that NFLPA executive director Gene Upshaw intends to force an uncapped year, it's critical for everyone -- including most importantly the players -- to understand what a year without a salary cap really means.

Here are the key points.

1. There will be no limit on what teams can spend on players, but there also will be no minimum, either. Currently, teams are required annually to spend at least 54 percent of the projected Defined Gross Revenues on player costs. In an uncapped year, teams can spend as little as they choose.

2. Only players with six or more accrued seasons will be eligible for unrestricted free agency. Players with three, four, or five accrued seasons will be restricted free agents. In other words, Bucs quarterback Chris Simms (who signed a one-year restricted free agent tender on Wednesday), will be a restricted free agent again in 2007. Under normal circumstances, he would be eligible for unrestricted free agency in 2007.

3. All teams will have an extra transition tag in 2007. Currently, teams can use either a franchise tag or a transition tag. So next year the teams will be able to restrict two otherwise unrestricted free agents.

4. The final four playoff teams from 2006 will be permitted to sign only their own unrestricted free agents. For each of their unrestricted free agents signed by someone else, they can replace them with an unrestricted free agent signed from another team.

5. The next four playoff teams will be subject to the same rules as the final four. They also will be able to sign one unrestricted free agent at a first-year salary of $1.5 million or more, and one at a first-year salary of less than $1 million (not including signing bonus), with increases of no more than 30 percent of the player's first-year salary.

The message here is that there are some significant limits to the cash bonanza that the players are expecting in 2007. It's another reason, in our opinion, for both sides to get the deal done.

I dont htink so. I could be wrong but from what I understand, after 2008 it is an uncapped league. Player friendly. Not sure why they would lock out of that situation.

Crap. So that means any teams that finish in the Final 4 can only sign UFA to replace the ones they lose. So basically they cant to their team if they dont lose someone. That is messed up.

I hope the NFL nitwits are happy.

That's not as bad as it sounds, it's trying to keep some sense or parity in an uncapped league. I'd rather it it not be the case, but at least the elite teams can't buy out all the best free agents year after year.

I don't know... it sounds kind of bad to me. If Trevor Pryce refuses to sign a contract with anyone because he can't get enough $$, where does that leave us?

Maybe I'm reading it wrong... but it sounds bad to me.

That rule would not take effect until the 2008 offseason. The current rules are in effect until 2007 season popps.

Thanks, that answered one of my next questions.

So, where does that put the cap over the next 3 seasons? Haven't had much time to keep up with this stuff.
