Default Labor deal's negotiation builds hope

denver broncos notes
Labor deal's negotiation builds hope
By Bill Williamson
Denver Post Staff Writer

Indianapolis - The NFL's collective bargaining agreement negotiation, which has been peppered with negative public comments, received a much-needed dose of positive energy Monday, and there are signs a new deal may be struck before the start of free agency.

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, a key player for the league's side, said Monday he believes a new deal is close to happening.

"I feel we'll likely have a deal ... It will be firmed into a situation that will reasonably address the beginning of the league year," he said.

Jones' statement came on the heels of repeated words of doom from union head Gene Upshaw. The two sides are expected to continue conversations today and meet in New York on Wednesday and Thursday. Broncos owner Pat Bowlen is a lead negotiator for the NFL, and he is expected to be in New York this week. He was in Indianapolis for two days this past weekend negotiating.

NFL free agency begins Friday. But if talks are indeed close, there's a good chance free agency would be delayed by a week. There's also a chance a new CBA could be ratified by the owners during a March 7 meeting in Dallas.

In a possible sign that a new deal is close, the league held off Monday from releasing the salary cap number for the 2006 season. Without a deal, it could be $92 million to $95 million. But a new deal may create a bigger salary cap figure. That would help the Broncos, who are working on creating cap space.

If no deal is struck, it would mean an uncapped year in 2007 and a potential work stoppage in 2008. The uncertainty of a deal is complicating several contract negotiations as free agency looms.

Broncos continue to work toward several signings this week, including offensive tackle Matt Lepsis and defensive tackle Gerard Warren. Denver also has to address restructuring several contracts, including those of defensive ends Trevor Pryce and Courtney Brown, running back Mike Anderson and tight end Jeb Putzier.
The players could be released in the near future if the restructuring isn't done.

Broncos general manager Ted Sundquist maintains his team will be under the salary cap.

Road to recovery

David Dunn, the agent for Broncos quarterback Jake Plummer, said Plummer is recovering well from an upper abdominal injury that kept him out of the Pro Bowl.

Dunn said Plummer isn't expected to have any setbacks. Broncos strength and conditioning coach Rich Tuten said Plummer is not receiving rehabilitation.

Preseason plans

The Broncos likely will end the preseason this year playing the Arizona Cardinals at their new stadium in Glendale. The first three preseason games are set by the league and likely will be announced in the coming weeks.

Next season's salary cap likely will be about $108 million per team if the owners and the players' union can agree to an extension of their collective bargaining agreement. It probably will be set at $95 million to $96 million per club if there's no labor extension. Last season's salary cap was $85.5 million per team. . . .

108 million cap?....even the Postons would sign off on that....I was hearing 102...but what is a number? However, it would certainly help us. I still think Pryce is history tho...

We had a payroll of $121m prior to Nalen's new deal which saved $3m-$4m, Lynch's restructure which saved $1m, Engleberger, Ekuban and Carswell's moves saved between $1.5m-$2m. So we'd be sitting around $114-$115m at present. Releasing Pryce would put us approx $2m under the cap.

add to that the re-work of C. Brown, M. Lepsis, and G. Warren and we could have significant $ to play with!!!

Anderson and Putz are also being asked to negotiate that's even without touching the big deals of Jake, Champ and Al. We'll probably need about $4m for our rookie pool with as many as 8 picks in the 1st 4 rounds being a possibility.

There's also Putz' option, which would free his $1.5M roster bonus and $1.5M salary, for another $3M. Mike Anderson is also probably either going to have to restructure or move on, despite how well he did for us last year.

If Bailey restructures we could also free up more money for '06. If the cap really does jump that far we'll be sitting pretty well. I'm just hoping they don't blow the extra money by hanging onto Pryce, damn waste of cap.

That's what I'm worried about to. If the cap had stayed at $95m he was gone for sure. This gives him more leverage to keep a decent salary but can someone tell me what Sundqvist and Shanahan see in him that every fan on this board doesn't

Lynch's deal saved more than a million. He had like a 4.5 million dollar figure this year and it was reduced to somewhere in the 2 million range. I'd say we're probably at hrm, 110 million dollars. Just cut Pryce, and say if a new deal gets done, we'll have some nice cap room.

They were at $110M after Nalen's new deal, $20M over a cap of $89-90M. I'd put them at around $107-108M right now.

You guys need to remember that a new CBA means that asking prices go up. Denver will have room to play, but players will cost more than in the past.
