Around 20 foreigners, most of them Africans, are on death row in Indonesia for drug offences. The latest foreigners shot by firing squad for drug offences were two Thais in October 2004. |

I think it's funny that our "reform" system is being advertised that one could be sodmized. Awesome.
the drug laws in this country are way out of wack with regard to "controlled" substances. |

Just sad. The death penalty? Are you kidding me?
You can be against drugs all you want, but this is way out of bounds. I wonder if the Australian government will intervene? If it were Americans, would you want us to step in? I think I would... |

But then again, these guys knew the rules going in. In MY country I would fight the death penalty for this without a doubt. But if your gonna smuggle drugs, you really should google for the penalties before hand. |

Whats missing from this thread is this...
Singapore has a death penalty for drug trafficking. Indonesia has death penalty for drug trafficking. Other countries have these rules. Its only in the Western World (at least so far) where a criminal is seen as the victim. These are not new rules. These people pull these stunts knowing this could happen. I saw earlier this year where a Vietnamese Australian was executed in Singapore for smuggling about a lb of heroin. The Aussie Gov't tried to save the guy, but to no avail. I doubt either one of these countries will bow to pressure. Neither wants to look weak in relation to a western society. Sorta like the old saying, "buyer beware." Unfortunately, Indonesia is pretty corrupt. One might figure they could bribe there way outta tight spot. Singapore, not so much. For those who blast Singapore (I have no experience with Indonesia) as draconian, I will say this. I have been there. People are civil. People feel secure in their houses, property, etc. I saw women walking down the street at midnite (not street walkers, women walking home from work) by themselves. There was no problem for them. People understand there are severe penalties for breaking the law. You might be able to criticize Indonesia for being unfair in its enforcement... one gets a firing squad while another bribes his way to freedom. But, its their country. You dont wanna die... dont buy and sell heroin in their country. Seems pretty simple to me. Funny, lotsa folks on here preach tolerance for others points of view... until the point of view conflicts with their own. As for Americans there... I say leave em to their fate. Just like Clinton shouldnt have stepped in when that dip$hit kid was spray painting cars, we should let them go. You act like an a$$ in someone else's country, you should pay their price. You dont go to your neighbor's house and crap on his living room floor (or at least most of us dont), you dont go to your neighbor's country & make a mess. And lets be honest here.. those Aussies werent there for Mai Tais and Yathzee... they were there to run drugs. |
