Smith OK after taking hard hit
By Bill Williamson
Denver Post Staff Writer

Honolulu - Rod Smith sat dejected in the locker room.

Smith, 35, sat with a bruised right eye and a cut that was going to be stitched a few minutes later. He was bloody. Yet, Smith wasn't feeling sorry for himself. The emotion was anger - directed at Rod Smith.

"That's typical Rod," Broncos safety John Lynch said.

Smith, who gave his Broncos coaches a major scare, had to be helped off the field in the final seconds of the NFC's 23-17 Pro Bowl victory Sunday night. After missing a catch that would have put the AFC in the red zone with about 20 seconds remaining, Smith was hit in the head by the leg of Dallas' Troy Williams. Smith's helmet was abruptly turned around, and Smith suffered the cut. He was on the ground for several moments and was taken out of the game.

Yet, afterward - Smith and coach Mike Shanahan said he is fine - Smith couldn't believe he didn't hold onto the ball.

"I was hurt, but I'm not worried about that," Smith said. "I wanted to win. ... I let my teammates down. I should have made that play."

After the first-down play from the NFC's 49-yard line, quarterback Steve McNair threw two interceptions and was sacked on fourth down.

"We could have won," Smith said. "We had too many missed opportunities, including mine."

Lelie not going anywhere

Internet rumors have floated that the Broncos are shopping receiver Ashley Lelie, who is in the final season of his contract. Those rumors are false, Shanahan said.

"Of course they are not true, of course," Shanahan said. "This is the time of year all kinds of crazy things are said."

In Saturday's Sacramento Bee, a San Francisco official denied Internet reports that the 49ers were considering trading a first-day draft pick for Lelie. One of Lelie's agents, Doug Hendrickson, said he saw the rumors and was baffled by them.

"They are not true," Hendrickson said. "We have not heard

Good news about Ash and Rod, I want at least 1-2 more years out of that tandem and if we add another good receiver or TE all the better.

If he really isn't going anywhere we should try to sign him to an extension this off season. He had a fairly quiet year this season, and if he starts adding TDs to his resume he'll command big money on the open market. Although I think he'll be a RFA?

With TD and the Duke coming out against the TO signing I think the cahnces of TO in Denver are slipping, and we need Lelie to take his game to the next level. We need to get a posession guy that can take some of the load off of Rod. I think we're better off at WR than we look on paper.

I think Devoe has huge upside, and I don't think that Watts is done. Terrell is on the roster, and given a full camp to compete he could be an asset to the Broncos next year. A lot of inexperience at the position, but a lot of talent as well. If Adams is #3 on the depth chart again we're in trouble.

So is Shanahan calling TJ a liar? Don't put up with this TJ. You have a rep to protect. Time to call out Shanahan or your sources for this public shame they have caused you! Blow the whistle on these guys!

I agree. This is the perfect time to extend him.

good news. now we just need a strong arm QB. Jake is great, dont get me wrong -- but he lacks in some areas and it hurts.

Don't worry about it Rod, you never let your teammates down and if you want to blame anyone for that loss yesterday just look to Monta.....uh I mean Green. Been listening to too many Chief fans. Glad Rod's ok.

Seriously, I like Lelie, my recent comments about him have mainly been to defend the guys who have been ludicrously blamed by many for some of his shortcomings (i.e. Jake Plummer, the stupid ass coaches who don't know how to use him properly). I will be glad to see him stay, but I'm just saying that what Shanny tells the press does not mean very much.

Why on earth would Shanahan trade Lelie

At the present time he'll get no value whatsoever plus he's taking a starter out of the line-up who's cap hit is minimal.

And who would be very hard to replace this year. Team needs more WRs not less. I'm waiting for the Kircus and Flowers bandwagons.

This place is the hearbeat of the fans, not the "official site" full of dimwits...we have our share, but this is the place.

Trust me, you would be surprised who visits here. Mock is amused that his trade lelie smack makes the post.

It's a good question tho...get moving on an extention Sundy if your not going to move him...

I was very worried that Rod took one for the ship..amusing that he wanted to win that bad...I still say that was a cheap shot. Good to hear it was just williams grinding his face. Prick is a cheap shot artitist...Rod was on the turf and he grinds into him? And no flag?

Several of us have mentioned moving him. It's all part of the Plan.

Expect the unexpected this offseason.
