Default Al Wilson trying to recruit Edgerrin James

Wilson lobbying on behalf of Broncos
By Bill Williamson
Denver Post Staff Writer

Ko Olina, Hawaii - NFL coaches can't talk to prospective free agents until next month. However, that doesn't stop players from doing a little lobbying.

Enter Al Wilson.

The Broncos' star linebacker took the opportunity of the Pro Bowl week to mosey over to old friend Edgerrin James, a free agent in waiting, and tell him how much he likes it in Denver - just in case James might care.

"I went up to Edge and talked to him for a minute about little things (Wednesday)," Wilson said after the AFC's practice for Sunday's game in Honolulu. "I told him the mountains are beautiful, man. ... I told him our running system is something else. Little things like that."

The Colts running back listened intently, as he has to other pitches this week.

"Who wouldn't be interested in that system and that history for running backs?" James said. "If I was there, I'd produce. I'd produce for anyone."

James would be perfect for Denver's system, fitting the mold of a Broncos running back. The team is looking for a playmaker on offense, having talked with wide receiver Terrell Owens and discussing internally possibly trading for Miami running back Ricky Williams.

James, though, likely would be more expensive than Owens or Williams, and the Broncos won't have a lot of means financially.

James said he is willing to listen to all offers. While he's open to returning to the Colts, he thinks he likely will end up with another team. Indianapolis also faces the task of re-signing receiver Reggie Wayne and wants to extend defensive end Dwight Freeney's contract. Wayne likely will get the "franchise" tag.

"Any team that wants me, I'll want them," James said. "Whoever it is, let's bring it on."

I don't understand why there is all this BUZZ about running back.

We are pretty set.

Running back by committee obviously isn't something Shanny likes.
Al W knows there are gonna be changes!

I agree, I have had a strong feeling TBell will be gone.

Not sure we should chase free agents around.

If you believe the hype about "the system" (and some of it is certainly true) one of the benefits is that you don't necessarily need a superstar at RB to make it work. From a cost/benefit standpoint, it just seems to me that we would get more bang for the buck by spending the money on different needs.

If you're Mike, Tatum or, even, Ron how would you feel about this report? Your teammate thinks another is better and is lobbying in the public to replace you. That is got to hurt one's pride and create some sort of conflict down the road. It's human nature. No one wants to admit that they are not the best at what they do. Especially athletes.

I've got to think that all this lobbying for "star" players, although arguably we need them, will create some, if not a lot, of tension in the locker room. This year's group seemed to be very tight. Do we break that up? Think about the Pats, other than Brady, do they have any "star" players. They are a tight, close team and that is one big reason they have been so successful over the years.

I am as intrigued with picking up a "star" like TO or Edge as the next guy. But, I can't help to feel like it may be making a deal with the devil, espcially in regards to TO. Just ask the Eagles about that - Superbowl to crapper (and they didn't win the superbowl.) I need to stop my rant now. Have a good day all.

You and everybody else. Dennis Green has gone out and basically said he is drafting L White just like he did a few years ago with L Fitzgerald.

The system is good for creating cut back lanes, the rest is up to the back. We need more BIG runs, taking it to the house. Bell did it on occasion, but mostly by speed around the edge.

i would actually love to have Edge on our team.
We dont need a speed back. He has awesome vision and follows his blocks prolly better than anyone in the league.

he is also awesome between the tackles and has a deadly stiff arm.

He is perfect for our system.

I would take him and Moulds or maybe even wayne.

Just to preserver karma and harmony on our team

The running game has worked with these RBs that Shanny has found, but what has the Broncos won since they've had a star RB? Nothing. The Broncos haven't done anything of note since TD. Time to get a special back.

To me Portis wasn't it. Had the stats. Had the attitude. Had the hype. But when you look a little deeper he wasn't dominant. No where close to TD.

MA and RD gave the Broncos all they had, and it worked, but they were never dominant.

A good back will look very good in the Broncos system. A very good back will look great in the Broncos system. Time to get a very good back.

If money wasn't an issue I'd say do what it takes to sign James. But money is a huge issue.

IM a USC fan.

I still cant get over he couldnt convert on 4th and 2. He just ran into the pile like a boneheaded RB. I rarely see Edge do that or Mike Anderson for that case.

TBell does it all the time.

It drives me nutts.

Dang, it makes me appreciate TD that much more.

No freakin vision im tellin ya.

A passing game would really open up the running game.
When TD was dominant, we had Elway. He could beat a team from the pocket, Plummer does not scare anyone.

Nice thought - but I don't see him working for a salary that is within the Broncos ability to give.
