Considering the general level of disgust and dismay over the officiating this season and exemplified in yesterday's debaucle, should NFL officials be made more available for public scrutiny? The only consistency in NFL officiating this season was that it was consistantly bad. Replay didn't fix it, should the NFL publicize the official's grading from week to week? Should officials be fined for blatantly poor calls? Should officials have to justify their calls to the fans and media? Job security in the NFL is tenuous for players, coaches, and management. Even mediocre performances will get a spot in the unemployment line, but officials enjoy a reprieve from such pressures.
Thoughts? Gripes? How would it be done? |

If we'd publically have some big fat eunich chop off some hands at halftime, these guys might think twice about tossing bogus flags.

Actualy they should make bieng an official a full time job. In the off season studying taking test maybey go to traing camps and ref the scrims. There has got to be a way to improve it and in my oppinion the only way to do that is to keep em on the clock year around.

Full time officials would make the most sense, especially considering this is a multi-billion dollar business. I don't know what else could really be done. The horrible officiating in the Super Bowl was a fitting end to the season.

The problem isn't the refs.
There are too many god damn rules. If you are a p***Y, you shouldnt play in the NFL and there should not be rules to protect pussies. |

They threw a flag on Bowlware for finishing a play, smartly they picked it up because it was obvious it was the wrong call. |

There are two problems here. There simply aren't the number of games as the NBA, Baseball and Hockey. Second, the NFL seems to think it's Congress...every year they enhance a rule...I honestly believe the refs are overwhelmed. I've adjusted my stance from "fixed" to "incompetent and overwhelmed". I also think Pitt came in as the media darlings. The only reason I have changed my mind was that rediculous "down by contact" reprieve when Big Ben was brushed by a pinkie. He went down on purpose because he had the first. IMO, it was a fumble. If that's down by contact I could of been in the NFL. |

I think your going to see, or it's allready happening, that coaches will have to gameplan for the ref...whether he lets the boys play or is trigger happy with the hankie and wants a piece of the action. Man...let em' play for christ sakes. This is getting absurd....the different crews are so damn inconsistent. |

The officiating has been bad., but to say it's because there are too many rules is ridiculous. The officiating has been bad because they've been calling things that have been around forever differently.
Pass interference is called almost randomly and it varies from game to game and even play to play. Holding is another one that can be called at any time to screw a team whenever the official feels like it. It used to be that if the the ball hits a receivers hands and a safety was anywhere near him, he could lay him out. Now you practically have to ask permission to tackle a receiver. The new rules like horse-collar and whatnot aren't the problem. We never see that one called anymore. It's how they're calling the old ones. |

A scarcity of black refs is the problem, imo. In fact I only recall seeing one black ref in all the years I watched the nfl (-:

Full time officials have to happen. It's a joke that an industry that makes millions of dollars, only keeps their officials around for the season.

Yeah, like baseball umpires never make bad calls because they are full time employees. I don't see how making football refs fulltime employees is the magic cure-all. They'd just form a union and it would be even harder to get rid of the ones who screw up. And what would they do during the off-season. A person can only study rules and watch films so much. |
