As an NC State fan I like to keep up with division rival Philip Rivers. You know, the #4 overall pick 2 years ago that lost the job to Brees thanks to a lengthy holdout.
Not sure if you remember but Cowher was planning on taking Rivers at the #10 draft spot that year but took Roethlisberger when Rivers was snagged at #4. Cowher played at NC State and had followed Rivers' progression his entire college career...and really, really wanted him in the draft. Strange twist of fate for both of them, huh? - Roethlisberger eases into a great game managing QB role with a solid defense, star WR, and powerful running game...he then makes it to the AFC Championship his first season and the Super Bowl his 2nd season. - Rivers sits his first year due to a lengthy bitter holdout while Brees has a career season, wins "Comeback Player of the Year," and pilots SD to a division championship and playoff berth. Rivers sits again this past season while Brees nearly squeeks them into the playoffs again. Charger's front office has already said that Rivers is officially off the trading block and will return to SD in a backup role next year. Just funny to me how the cards fell for Rivers...although some of it was due to his own actions with the holdout. |
