Default Herm the weasel

A break during the playoff week to laugh at the Chiefs...

Edwards' defection to Chiefs a disgrace
Tim Kawakami, San Jose Mercury News

I guess Herman Edwards decided that it's fine to live an honorable and comfortable life in New York, but it's far better to be a very wealthy Kansas City hypocrite.

Bully for Herm, assuming he can look himself in the mirror as the Chiefs' new and tainted head coach.

Congratulations to his agent, his accountant and his new boss in Chiefs land, Carl Peterson, for coolly extricating Edwards from his remaining two years with the Jets and hammering out a four-year deal worth a reported $12 million.

But there's an impact -- and a price to pay -- beyond the extra dollars in his pocket and that little fourth-round draft pick that went to the Jets. I hope Herm realizes that the ripples go on and on.

``I know what the National Football League is about,'' Edwards said at his introductory news conference in Kansas City on Monday. ``It's about commitment.''

Oh, sure. Got it, Herm.

After preaching long and convincingly about accountability and commitment during his Gotham run, what's Edwards' credibility level now that he has cut and run as soon as some extra cash was flashed?
What does Edwards say if superstar running back Larry Johnson wants a new contract or else he'll hold out, no more 200-yard games, no shot at a Super Bowl?

Nothing. Edwards can say nothing now. Except: I got mine.

What can Edwards and Peterson say if this move motivates an AFC West splurge of illicit deals that would make theirs look like pennies on the dollar?

What about Al Davis hooking on to Bill Belichick for 10 percent of the franchise if Belichick can tick off Patriots management enough, or Alex Spanos tries to pilfer John Fox -- who cares about current contracts?
What do they say about Terrell Owens, who acted far worse in public than Edwards but was only attempting to do what Edwards accomplished?

What does Edwards say to a player like Laveranues Coles, who came to the Jets to be with Edwards and now is stuck there with no Edwards-style escape possible?

Nobody who had a part of the Edwards deal can say anything anymore.
That's sad, because until the coach and his agent contrived and connived their way out of New York, Edwards was a man whose words meant something.

He spent a lot of his youth in Monterey, he coached at San Jose State, and he never forgot this area. Still hasn't forgotten it, as I'm sure I'll be reminded by many of his local friends.

His Jets were never the most talented team, but in three of his five seasons Edwards got them to the playoffs, mostly, it seemed, by force of will.

So his roots meant something. His voice meant something. Maybe Kansas City was always his dream job, but his commitment to his Jets players meant something, too.

Hey, look, the Jets were 4-12 this season after nearly reaching the AFC title game last January. Maybe it was time for him to leave New York. Maybe he was tired of General Manager Terry Bradway or Chad Pennington's sore arm.

But Edwards spent a ton of time this season denying that the recurring K.C. rumors had a shred of truth. He swore he was thinking only about the Jets, about winning, about commitment.

He asked everybody to believe in him, again.

Now, Edwards weakly evokes the Las Vegas ad campaign when he talks of his time in New York. There's something a bit Freudian in that -- are you subconsciously ashamed of anything, Herm?

``I believe in family, and what happened in New York, it stays in New York,'' Edwards said Monday. ``If you have any questions about what happened, I am going to tell you right now it stays in the family.''

It's a business, sure. NFL coaches are big commodities in a multibillion-dollar industry. People like to make money, me included.

Jon Gruden maneuvered himself out of Davis' clutches. Bill Parcells gets Machiavellian practically every January, the most egregious example coming when he reportedly was executing his exit out of New England (to the Jets, interestingly) while preparing the Patriots for an eventual loss in Super Bowl XXXI.

Larry Brown did it again last summer, when he basically took a front-office job with Cleveland, then reneged, then plotted a departure to the New York Knicks, all while coaching the Detroit Pistons in the NBA playoffs.

But, silly me, I used to hold Edwards to a higher standard -- of loyalty, commitment and sacrifice. He practically ordered us to hold him to a higher standard, advertising himself as a coach who was separate from the deceitful, manipulative hordes.

So when he falls, the whole coaching profession falls, too. The much-admired Herman Edwards can obviously do whatever he wants with his life, but from now on he has dropped the ``admired'' part.

What happened in New York stays in New York. It stays in the family, man. Don't talk about it.

It's still not as bad as what Parcells did to us during SB XXXI as he was defecting to the Jets.

I guess the difference is that the Jets fans wanted Herm to leave.

It couldn't have happened to a more deserving team.

A teams' that committment regularly comes into question.

Congrats, KC.

You and Werm Edwards deserve each other.

What the ****? How is this man a hyprocrite for finding another job while on a job that is possibly going to fire him? I still don't understand. I know Herm did not go looking for this job, the job came looking for him and all his current boss had to do when contacted by the Chiefs was say, "No thank you, Herm will not be available, he is working for us." What did they do? They sure as hell didn't say that. They said, "here, we will sell you his ass for a fourth round draft pick. And blame is his ass for taking the job."

Stupid.

Herm...you took a quality playoff type franchise and drove it into the ground. Please do the same in KC. Oh by the way...the AFC west now has 2 media pimps for coaches...and if Davis hires a media pimp it'll be three that will have to come up with idiotic comments after losing to denver.

My only fear, this will turn the NFL into what the NBA is free agent wise. Coaches going different places and wanting to get back to where they came from, but Herm...the Jets was all you ever did for football. You are a sell out. And all it cost was a 4th round draft pick.

Well, gee, stating the NFL is about commitment while tearing up two years remaining on a legitimate contract, denying contact with Carl Peterson prior to the end of the season when it was written & talked about for two full months, and slipping into his flashy red KC panties as he throws away his Jets turtleneck...

pretty much makes TJ's point I think

I like Herm. But then I also liked Vermeil. Marty, now that's a different story although I sorta feel sorry for him how he is always taking it in the shorts anytime the Broncos stand between him and a Super Bowl. It is like watching the Red Sox versus the Yankees - up until 2004. You know what's coming - you just don't know how.

Funny.

You get a new job it's a promotion, or a step up, or a dream job.

An NFL HC gets a new job and he's a hypocrite.

The only hypocrites here are the people who say they wouldn't switch jobs to make twice the money doing the same thing.

Everyone in this thread has done that at least once...

Herm stated that the NFL is about commitment.

This is patently hypocritical coming from someone who adamantly denied any interest in the Kansas City post, who reneged on a contract extension and who clearly lied about contact with another franchise while coaching the Jets.

The Jets aren't considering a tampering complaint out of spite, they only need find evidence that is out there somewhere to earn KC's #1 draft pick as punishment.

Just deserts for you children so quick to label Denver 'cheaters'

At the very least, we picked up some hardware to compensate the 'shame'.

Wouldn't plan on that anytime soon.

Herm is taking a firmly political stance on this. The NFL IS about committment. It's committment to self, to money, to your personal future, your career and finally if you have anything left to team.

I notice head coaches are going through some pretty jacked up things to justify what they do. I think Lombardi would sell insurance rather than deal with some of the things coaches deal with today. At least it was..."honest".
