Adopt-a-Bronco:
The Defense
Default Shanahan to rest four starters vs. Chargers

Not sure if this was posted already, nor am I sure just how accurate it is.

DENVER (AP) - Linebacker Al Wilson, defensive lineman Courtney Brown, cornerback Darrent Williams and running back Mike Anderson will all sit out of Denver's regular-season finale in San Diego this weekend to nurse injuries.

Wilson had surgery Monday to repair a broken right thumb. Brown has a sore knee and sore shoulder. Williams has missed the last two weeks with an injured groin. Anderson sprained his ankle last Saturday against the Raiders.
"With Mike Anderson, if it was a playoff game, he'd be able to play, but not at 100 percent," coach Mike Shanahan said Tuesday.

Shanahan has the luxury of resting starters because Saturday's game against San Diego means nothing in the standings to either team. Denver (12-3) has secured the second seed in the AFC and can't move up. San Diego (9-6) has been eliminated from playoff contention.

Not sure KC thinks this game means nothing.... it's what they get for not taking care of business with NY and Dallas.

KC needs Denver to beat the Chargers to even have a shot at the playoffs. They also need Detroit to beat Pitt in Pitt. So needless to say, KC is out of the playoffs, but ofcourse this is the NFL where anything can happen.

Dayne should get more carries in this game & maybe show a little more of what he can do in this system. That'll give us a better idea where the team might go in the offseason regarding RB's and resigning players like Dayne. Personally, I like the idea of having 3 good backs locked up, I'm just not sure how long they will wait for playing time, but then, it's not like there's a shortage of good RB's in the league in the same back up role right now. It seems that almost every team has at least 2 good backs.

What the hell am I saying?

I wonder how long some of the other starters will go? I thought Lelie would sit too with the 14 stitches in his arm. Can't see Jake, Rod, Champ playing much either.

I'd like to see BVP get some playing time too. I'd like to see what he could do in his second year with this offense.

Maybe Terrell and Watts will be active. I'd like to see them get some reps.

I hope Shanny sits Bell as he's too important for us. I couldn't care less about a thousand yards. Tatum is my boy, I watched most of his OSU games, the kid can tear up the turf. Indy has field turf, the Superbowl has field turf. I would hate to see him go down with some freak injury in a meaningless game.

Another great reason to rest our starters. Kicking the Chiefs out of playoff contention would be the icing on the cake.

It is obvious that the injured players should sit out (Wilson, Anderson, Lelie, Brown and Wiliams). But I sincerely hope that that the rest of the regulars will play about a half and call it done in the positions where they can do that. Getting to see the other WRs and maybe a bit more of Cox and Roc Alexander and other younger players would be interesting.

In either case, the Broncos should play to win. It is a matter of competition.

not that im surprised. All those guys are injured and i though they would be on the bench.

Still Shanny is keeping the secret to how he plays the guys and will keep it a secret till the game i bet.

As far as I'm concerned, if they aren't playing to win, they shouldn't even make the trip! We've seen what happens when the Broncos rest up before the playoffs. in '96 we rested the starters as the number one seed and got it handed to us by Jacksonville. In '03, after beating the Colts in their house, we rested the starters against Green Bay and got punked at Indy the following week. in '97 (necessity) and '98 we did not rest our starters (until the games were out of reach). The players (except those who are injured and truly need the time to heal) should be told "When we've got a 21-point lead, you can sit down."

Always, always, always, freakin' ALWAYS play to win!

Resting players prior to the post season hasn't been kind to Mike.

In '96 he rested Elway, and Davis....we got blitzed by GB 41-6 ....lost in divisional playoff game @ home to Jags 30-27

In '04 he rested Jake and the boys, we get blitzed by Colts 49-24

But like Mike said, either way he'll be questioned...if we come out flat in playoffs, fans will wonder why he rested his starters....if he plays his starters to keep them up to speed and one of them gets injured, the fans will wonder why he was playing in a meaningless game.

I think he should play them for maybe the first qtr (at the least a series or two), then let the scrubs come in and mop up.

There is absolutely no reason to work Bell to death in a meaniless game to get his 131. You can't expect to get 1000 as a backup RB. Give Dayne and Cecil some work. Sure, we run him 38 times like we did Portis, and watch him hurt a knee. Remember that gem of playcalling?

I'm not talking about resting players. I'm talking about not overworking Bell...there is no reason to overwork him. I agree all healthy should play at least the first half, but then again, it's good to have some other players get reps. It's a fine line.

My opinion is you rest anyone banged up totally, run your starters the first half, then let BVP and Dayne and the other second teamers in on the second half...DEVO. Adams...hell, activate Watts to see if he wants to actually catch a ball.

I'm pretty sure Bell won't be over-worked.

I think the coaches really do want to get a good look at Dayne, and even Sapp.

The intrigue (from the fans' perspective anyway) in this game might come when Darius Watts &/or David Terrell get some reps...if not more than a few.

I also heard today that Darent Williams is getting all kinds of therapy & designed exercises in a concerted effort to return in time for the play-offs, but as of Monday, even the training staff has their doubts.

Day-go is an 8-point fav...very interesting.

The Anderson ankle is worrisome...I hope this really is a case of something he'll be over in another week with some rest. I'd hate going into the first playoff game without him healthy. We need TB as the change of pace speed guy instead of a bell cow runner who gets it 25-30 times.

In a locker-room interview right after the Raider game, Anderson told a reporter he'll be fine & that it wasn't a serious sprain, just a bad twist.

Shanahan said Monday that if this Saturday's game in San Diego had been a 'must' game, he could've played...maybe not at 100%, but he could go.

Well, if DW can't lock and load, others have to step up...Foxy has done that. groins take 6-6 weeks minimum...we are so fortunate to fall into the bye. We got nicked with all the cheap shots against Oakland...I counted 7. I have no clue how the refs kept ignoring it, but it wouldn't of made a difference, we thrashed them, but should of won by much more. Regardless, play healthy starters for a half then the second team.

You bing bad tidings Wabbit about DW...freaking Grinch....I'm not all surprised tho...he said he would be back the other day...did he over work it? Damn.

It pissed me off all the cheap shots Oakland was taking, but we are still fairly healthy, with almost a month to heal.

Man, Jake was on the mark...that guy was going for the side of the right knee....that was screwied up. he was diving down and it wasn't bcause he was crawiling thru a block...I can't believe such a blatat attemp to injure isn't called just because Jake jupmped up to get he legs off the ground.

Jake was a smart cookie and jumed up to take his cleats out of the air.

I was furious all game at the cheap shots and the refs were blind.

That prick Raider wasn't going for a sack, he was trying to take Jake's knee.
Who was that prick anyway?

That whole team was throwing cheap shots the whole game, especially starting late in the 3'rd quarter.

Anyone who watches the film will see the cheap shots. The Oakland D decided if they couldn't stop us, they would hurt us. It was obvuiys ti everyone but the refs...WTF happened to Lele? Do you think he chewed his own arm? They tried to break his arm actually...I saw the play...God I'm Pissed off...

That is nothing but a joke in Oakland. I don't even know where to go with this. God I hate that gang of idiots in Oakland...I wouldn't even call them a team.

I am glad to hear that the starters will be playing quite a bit.

Not a big fan of sitting all your top guys and letting the other team hammer you. Bad mojo.

yeah I think Shanny learned his lesson in 03 against Green Bay

plus we have a bye week, so our guys who aren't hurt can rest then

You can get hurt on the 1st play of a playoff game, so play to win

1996 was a tad different b/c we rested guys in week 15 against Green Bay...maybe it's just a Green Bay thing

then in week 16 and 17 we tried to get our mojo back but couldn't
