Default Falcons Considering Punishment After Mora Blows Up

Heh heh. Did the Falcons not understand the genetics when they hired Mora?

----------------------------------------------------------------
Mora loses cool after postgame radio question
Associated Press

ATLANTA -- Falcons general manager Rich McKay said Sunday it's too early to tell if the team will discipline coach Jim Mora for his antics following the team's overtime loss at Tampa Bay.

"Let me get through the weekend," said McKay, who also is the Falcons president. "Right now I just don't know."

The 27-24 defeat on Saturday eliminated Atlanta from playoff contention. After the game, in his regularly scheduled postgame chat with radio flagship analyst Dave Archer, Mora was asked to explain why the Falcons punted from their 24 when facing fourth-and-2 with 1:08 remaining in overtime.

Even though Michael Koenen's punt went 53 yards, Mark Jones' 28-yard return put the Buccaneers in position to win the game on Matt Bryant's field goal five plays later.

According to several team and radio station employees, Mora abruptly removed his headset after hearing Archer's question and threw it to the ground.

Three team employees and two with the radio station, all of whom requested anonymity because they said they feared alienating the coach, said Mora was so angry that he also threw a microphone -- which almost hit Nicole Watson, a sideline reporter with the radio station, in the head.

Watson had given Mora the microphone and headset so he could conduct his usual postgame interview with Archer, who was in the broadcast booth above the field.

Mora did not immediately return a call placed to his cell phone Sunday afternoon.

The Falcons have lost five of seven since a Week 9 victory at Miami left them 6-2 and tied for the NFC lead.

Atlanta, which advanced to the conference title game last season and beat defending NFC champion Philadelphia in the Sept. 12 season opener, blew a 24-17 lead against the Bucs when Carnell Williams ran for a touchdown on fourth-and-1 at the Falcons 6 with 25 seconds left in regulation.

I saw that game, and I've never seen 2 teams do the their best to lose a football game.

Maybe Archer reminded him as to how many times Mora told us that Ron Mexico had really developed into a very good passer and was very comfortable in the passing offense.

That he definitely inherited from the old man. I've never seen a coach blow more games by coaching not to lose.

What was he suppose to do? Go for it and just automatically hand them the game if they don't make? What a retarded question.

So he threw his headset to the ground, big freaking deal.

Exactly, ask the Broncos how easy it is trying to to pick up a couple yards on 4th down.

Ididnt see the game,so cant say for sure ,but when your playoff life is on the line , Tie it go into overtime ? Give your team every chance to win .......
In Broncos lore there is a game Played in 1971 vs the Dolphins Dubbed the Half of loaf game ,by Lou Saben .....Denver had a shot @ Beating the Phins instead Saben went for a draw .....there was no over time back then ...... but if Over time was part of the game ,we never would have remembered Half of a loaf of bread is better then none, game ......... Just saying there was no real reason for Mora not trying a FG , specialy with Playoff life on the line ...... So yes it is a big deal

It was a good call. I can understand having seen the game that it was a good call...and not the time to be aggressive.

Depends whether a tie would've kept them alive, because a loss eliminated them.

Bottom line is, you just got eliminated from the playoffs. Sure your the leader of the Falcons as HC but id be pissed too.

Just like the Chuggers this was a team that tried to win on talent alone, it is the ULTIMATE team game where everyone must play together and they just couldnt get it done.

No...Atlanta was on their OWN 24 yard line. Failing to get the 1st down on 4th and 2 would have given TB the ball with a chip shot field goal on the very next play. They made the right choice and the reporter's question is moronic to say the least. That does not excuse Mora from acting like a bigger moron.

Hindsight is 20/20. Had they gone for it and NOT made it, the same reporter would have asked "why did you decide to go for it when you are on your OWN 24?"

You gotta play defense in this league inspite of the rules to the contrary.

The question was valid. There was only 68 seconds left in the OT. Mora and his coaching staff were clueless. NONE of them new what a tie did to their season.

Another tidbit about this team, if they don't win this week they will keep their record in tact of NEVER having winning seasons back to back.

I'd think your chances for not having the other team score would be better to punt than to go for it on 4th and 2.

Not the point though (or maybe it really is since the Atlanta coaching staff had no clue). A tie doesn't get them in the playoffs.

A tie and they had no chance? Did they know that coming into the game? Or should they?

They didn't have a clue nor did the NFL league office. According to Mort last night that was the reason he was spotted on his cell phone on the sidelines as he was calling the league office trying to find out the scenario if they ended up in a tie and the league office told them they didn't know as the scenario was too complex at that point.

Normally I'd agree Garcia, but in this case a tie was just as poisoness as a loss for the Falcons based on the playoff senarios. With 1:08 left, they had to figure they would not see the ball again. Given what was at stake, they needed to play that situation as if they were down by a point. It was a valid question.

I think it was the 34, but at any rate, you can't go for it there. I guess if your playoff life is on the line you have to go tho...normally, you punt even in overtime...if a tie eliminates you, then why punt either.

He's just following in his father footsteps..."Playoffs? What Playoffs?"
