Default Shanahan's Moves Look 'Masterful'

Miller: Shanahan's Moves Look 'Masterful'
By Gary Miller, CBS4 Broncos Insider

(CBS4) DENVER Mike Shanahan was dubbed "The Mastermind" back in the glory days. He was called many other, less complimentary things over the next 6 or 7 years. But if we take a closer look at the moves he's made, many that went under the radar, it sure looks like "The Mastermind" fits again.

On the offensive line, Cooper Carlisle was set to sign with Baltimore during the off season. No big deal to many, Carlisle seemed to be a career back up. But Shanny called him at the 11th hour and talked him into returning to the Broncos. Carlisle played every down this season at right guard. Don't forget the uproar over moving Matt Lepsis to the critical left tackle position last year. How much thought do you give to it now? Lepsis has developed into an outstanding left tackle.

The Broncos also lost crazed assistant Alex Gibbs. He was irrepalceable, the critics said. Still, the O line continues to open holes for the backs and protect Jake Plummer.

Defensively, Shanahan welcomed Ian Gold back with open arms even after the linebacker bolted for free agent riches in Tampa. Golds is having a terrific year.

He laid the law down to Trevor Pryce during the offseason. He was ready to trade Pryce, who sat out most of last season with a back injury. Pryce's health hasn't been an issue this season.

He missed on Maurice Clarett and Jerry Rice. But he definitely scored with Todd Sauerbrun and the Cleveland Brown-cos. And don't forget Jake Plummer.

Shanahan saved Plummer's career 3 years ago when he released him from the desert. Plummer was wild and untamed -- fighting a one-man battle with the woeful Cardinals.

It has taken time, but Jake now takes a play when it's there. He's playing the game the way few thought he could. He's not Peyton Manning or Tom Brady, but he was the best quarterback available when the Broncos went shopping. Shanahan got him and developed him.

The Broncos snuck into the playoffs the past 2 years. They're in again this year and on the verge of being AFC West champs. They're hoping an opening round bye is in their future. While fans in Detroit, Arizona, Houston, Buffalo and many other cities can only dream about the playoffs, the Broncos are, as always, playing meaningful games in December and looking forward to football in January.

Thanks again to the masterful moves of Mike Shanahan.

On a side note, Shanny looks as much like Dubya as he can in this pic:

Yep and everyone here wanted him fired before the season began. Lepsis was on the other side and Hamilton and Foster came after Gibbs left. He must be doing something right.

I still dislike Dennison.

I think its the way he looks.

But he has handled the coaching of the o-line very well.

I believe you wrote that Dennison "was not sexy like Alex Gibbs."

What can you say, different folks, different strokes?

Naw, its not like that. He just seems like a weasle to me. Something about his face. Just a feeling is all.

Great job coaching though.

Oh and way to use Jesus' name in vain during the holiday season

No matter how many successes Shanny has, he'll never get the credit that he deserves. He should be coach of the year this season. Nobody has done more with seemingly so little.

in 11 years, the broncos have 7 playoff appearances, more wins, more offensive yards, more points scored then any other team in the nfl. 2 superbowl titles, 2 afc west crowns. not bad. but hey, he is horrible. lets fire him.

"The Broncos snuck into the playoffs the past 2 years."

That's a key statement right there. The past two years we were hoping other teams would lose so the Broncos could sneak in the playoffs. This year it's been locked up early. They are fighting for a first round bye instead of a ticket to someobody else's house for the wild card game.

The Broncos are 12-2 all time at home during the playoffs. I like our chances, especially if they get the #2 seed. That's one home win away from the AFC Championship game. If the Pats are really back, that AFC Championship game could be at Mile High.

Shanahan has done a good job this year but how about Lovie Smith and Marvin Lewis when it comes to coach of the year?

That's true, but that year we weren't sure until late in the season. If they had lost that game they probably wouldn't have made it in.

This year we've known for weeks that they were going to make the playoffs.

Don't forget Belichick! He's held his ship together through the longest injury list in the league.

Now, now. As subtle as you made it, he does deserve some breathing room. After all he is not a Chiefs or Raider fan
