Jails .. More of them but where ? nimby
not in my back yard , people want more jails but noone wants them near them.
SO i think i have a idea...
Barges .. you tie 20 30 barges together ... and float that puppy a mile or so off a cost . build cages/cells and guard it with a 24/7 manned boat that anchors near it and Bingo!!!! ... its the Rock with even a bigger fear factor cuz it might sink lol. You start sticking the worst of the worst out in the middle of no where and you watch the crime rates fall ..

That was kinda the whole idea behind Alcatraz. However, after time Alcatraz became too expensive to operate and was closed for more convential style jails. My guess is that your float barges would get the kybosh for the same reason.
Prison is a mixed bag. Its gets scum off the street... for awhile. Which is nice for the rest of us. However, on the flipside, it is a criminal finishing school. You go in a meth cook, and come out trained in arson, murder, robbery, forgery and God only knows what else. If you send them away for 10 years, you might as well send em away for life as the percentage of people who have spent 10 + years behind bars becoming career criminals is extraordinary.
Do you remember the line from Full Metal Jacket - Its not a gun that kills but a hard heart. On the same note, its a lack of morales that drives one to life of crime.
Look at China and Singapore. They execute drug dealers. And they consider a dealer someone with 2 dosages (I exagerate, but not much). Yet, people still run narcotics in those countries. Unbelievable. Now, China is as corrupt as the day is long, but Singapore is mostly on the up and up.
I do, however, have some admiration for Singapore. They dont mess around. When I was there, I saw women walking by themselves on the main drag at 2 AM. Not hookers, but just women going home from their evening shifts. And no one messed with em. Can you imagine that in a US city with a population over 50? Of course the world considers them draconian, but the law abiding citizens in that city live their life almost without fear of thuggery.
