PFT MIDSEASON AWARDS With a full nine weeks gone and only eight to go, we decided to make like all of the other mainstream media outlets and throw out for consideration our thoughts at the the best -- and the worst -- of the first half of the 2005 season. And, as usual, we overdid it. First, the AFC . . . . Best quarterback: Peyton Manning, Colts. Worst quarterback: Gus Frerotte, Dolphins. Best running back: LaDainian Tomlinson, Chargers. Worst running back: Jamal Lewis, Ravens. Fullbacks: Don't know, don't care. Best receiver: Chad Johnson, Bengals. Worst receiver: Reggie Williams, Jaguars. Best tight end: Antonio Gates, Chargers. Worst tight end: Doug Jolley, Jets. Best offensive tackles: Willie Anderson, Bengals; Matt Lepsis, Broncos. Worst offensive tackles: Chester Pitts, Texans; Todd Wade, Texans. Guards: See fullbacks. Best center: Tom Nalen, Broncos. Worst center: Anyone who isn't Tom Nalen. Best defensive ends: Dwight Freeney, Colts; Derrick Burgess, Raiders. Worst defensive ends: Marcellus Wiley, Jaguars; Courtney Brown, Broncos. Best linebackers: Cato Junes, Colts; Jonathan Vilma, Jets; Andra Davis, Browns. Worst linebackers: Jason Babin, Texans; Kendrell Bell, Chiefs; Peter Boulware, Ravens. Best cornerbacks: Deltha O'Neal, Bengals; Ty Law, Jets. Worst cornerbacks: Every guy who has played corner for the Pats with the exception of Asante Samuel; Pacman Jones, Titans. Best safeties: John Lynch, Broncos; Troy Polamalu, Steelers. Worst safeties: Every guy who has played safety for the Pats with the exception of Rodney Harrison. Best punter: Donnie Jones, Dolphins. Worst punter: Chris Gardocki, Steelers. Best kicker: Rian Lindell, Bills. Worst kicker: Mike Nugent, Jets. Best coach: Marvin Lewis, Bengals. Worst coach: Dom Capers, Texans. Best executive: Mike Brown, Bengals. Worst executive: Floyd Reese, Titans. Best veteran acquisition: Randy Moss, Raiders. Worst veteran acquisition: Duane Starks, Patriots. Offensive rookie of the year: Heath Miller, Steelers. Defensive rookie of the year: Odell Thurman, Bengals. Draft-day bust, offense: Mike Nugent, Jets. Draft-day bust, defense: Pacman Jones, Titans. MVP: Peyton Manning, Colts. Golden Turd: Reggie Williams, Jaguars. Now for the NFC . . . . Best overall quarterback: Eli Manning, Giants. Best running quaterback: Michael Vick, Falcons. Worst overall quarterback: Aaron Brooks, Saints. Worst passing quarterback: Michael Vick, Falcons. Best running back: Shaun Alexander, Seahawks. Worst running back: Kevin Jones, Lions. Best receiver: Steve Smith, Panthers. Worst receiver: Terrell Owens, Eagles. Best tight end: Alge Crumpler, Falcons. Worst tight end: Dan Campbell, Cowboys. Best offensive tackles: Walter Jones, Seahawks; Jon Jansen, Redskins. Worst offensive tackles: Alex Barron, Rams; Kenyatta Walker, Buccaneers. Best center: LeCharles Bentley, Saints. Worst center: Cory Withrow, Vikings. Best defensive ends: Bryan Young, 49ers; Michael Strahan, Giants. Worst defensive ends: Simeon Rice, Buccaneers; Calvin Pace, Cardinals. Best defensive tackles: Rod Coleman, Falcons; Tommie Harris, Bears. Worst defensive tackles: Grady Jackson, Packers; Johnathan Sullivan, Saints. Best linebackers: Brian Urlacher, Bears; Karlos Dansby, Cardinals; LaVar Arrington, Redskins. Worst linebackers: Chris Claiborne, Rams; Warrick Holdman, Redskins; Napoleon Harris, Vikings. Best cornerbacks: Chris Gamble, Panthers; DeAngelo Hall, Falcons. Worst cornerbacks: Fred Smoot, Vikings; Will Allen, Giants. Best safeties: Sean Taylor, Redskins; Roy Williams, Cowboys. Worst safeties: Every safety on the Packers roster. Best punter: Jeff Feagles, Giants. Worst punter: Reggie Hodges, Rams. Best kicker: Neil Rackers, Cardinals. Worst kicker: Doug Brien, Bears; Paul Edinger, Vikings. Best coach: Tom Coughlin, Giants. Worst coach: Mike Sherman, Packers. Best executive: Ernie Accorsi, Giants. Worst executive: Matt Millen, Lions. Best veteran acquisition: Plaxico Burress, Giants. Worst veteran acquisition: Fred Smoot, Vikings. Offensive rookie of the year: Cadillac Williams, Buccaneers. Defensive rookie of the year: DeMarcus Ware, Cowboys. Draft-day bust, offense: Cedric Benson, Bears; J.J. Arrington, Cardinals. Draft-day bust, defense: Erasmus James, Vikings. MVP: Steve Smith, Panthers. Golden Turd: Terrell Owens, Eagles. My thoughts: Interesting that they said Courtney Brown was among the AFCs worst DEs he has been a very solid contributor. He's certainly above average in the AFC, I dont know where they pulled that one out of. Also surprising that they didnt recognize any of our LBs, although they did give the OL props. Why didnt they talk about the AFC DTs? WTF. Sauerbrun and Shanny got jobbed as well. They hate Shanny so it isnt too surprising that they refuse to give him any credit or mention any of the successful browncos.

funny...on an unrelated note, since there was no Dominique in madden 06, i traded lenny walls for Pacman jones and the titans 2nd rounder, and nrenamed jones as Dominique Foxworth. hes pretty good. i also drafted "Kyle Wright" (i changed his name) outta miami, reggie epps outta the U, and "Devin Hester" who is the best player in my season now (outta the U), he had 9 catches for 473 yards and 1 TD against the fade. he has a 99 speed and he burns everyone deep. he has like 15 TDs in 7 games. Kyle Johnson is my goalline threat, he has 13 catches for 30 yards and 8 TDs, includin 5 in one game against the fade. (the game against the raiders was insane. plummer threw for like 600, and KJ had like 7 catches for 10 yards and 5 TDs.) |

I can't honestly say I see them putting any effort in this beyond going with what is either obvious to everyone or what they heard over lunch. They're reaching and guessing on half the things they say. Randy Moss for best acquisition? He's been pretty non-existant, Lamont Jordan is a better choice than Moss and I don't even know if he was the best. You could even say Ty Law is a better pickup since he's one of their best cornerbacks. This article is just diarrhea of the mouth, or in this case fingers. Sometimes, it's better not to say anything at all than to come off as ignorant. They chose the latter.

Tabloid journalism "best and worst" lists are always, and without fail, underbaked.

Web site most likely to not be taken seriously, tie:
ProFootballtalk....AlJezeera..... actually, he has some good takes at times...he's just an incredible dimwit at certain select times....notice how he had to take one last parting shot on a Brownco, for absolutely no reason...I have said this a million times...Brown wasn't brought in here to be a dominant DE...just contribute....he is not...I repeat..not the first overall choice of the Broncos...he's a role player and is doing his bit...while I was hoping he might be a bit more dominant than he has been, he's still getting over his knee or something...he's played ok or wouldn't be starting... People have to realize this guy is pretty amusing to read, but he absolutely hates the Broncos. He will wave a prison shank at them at every opportunity...it's almost pathetic.... The bit about Nalen made me
. It's so true as well. Courtney Brown as worst DE though? Are you kidding? While he hasn't torn it up out there every game, he's been more than solid, kicking in the occasional big play. |

Denver hasn't been registering alot of sacks, but we have been consistently pushing and collapsing the pocket...

Guys like that need to be beat into submission, kinda like Bang...yeah, he's amusing, but really full of himself...PFT is worth reading tho...I don't think it's fair to hammer on Brown tho...notice he hasn't missed a single game due to injury...Again, Denver doesn't get enough breakthru sacks, but we get excellent push with Pryce, Warren and Brown...any moron can see we are getting push but don't have a man breaking free...if DW can go in the slot if Champ is healthy we can send that little demon...he's something else...send him...he will kill a QB it's almost comedy....he's like some cartoon character...if we can get him matched up in the slot, send him.... |

Even tho Hamilton isn't able to move the pile...he's done a fine job for us...he's been fantastic at zone blocking...he's not going to move the pile tho with 8 or 9 in the box...
We should bring in Big Money to pave the road...dammit...give me the headphones... Big Money paved the road....sheesh...he would love it to boot...he's like a tactical weapon... It was comedy...he took some LB and crushed him into jellatin...Anderson walked in behind him...maybe they are saving it... Last edited by watermock; 11-13-2005 at 12:40 AM.. |
