Default Denver Voters OK Marijuana Possession

Just when we get Invesco rocking we pass this....

DENVER - Residents of the Mile High City have voted to legalize the possession of small amounts of marijuana for adults. Authorities, though, said state possession laws will be applied instead.

With 100 percent of precincts reporting early Wednesday, 54 percent, or 56,001 voters, cast ballots for the ordinance, while 46 percent, or 48,632 voters, voted against it.

Under the measure, residents over 21 years old could possess up to an ounce of marijuana.

The Denver DA just said it does not matter since he goes by state laws. Just a waste of ballot space. I personally dont care what anyone does in their home as long as they stay off the roads but this changes nothing.

i understand there is still a federal ban - so it really doesn't matter what the state passes. like hotrod said, it was a wasted ballot space.

Not really. It's part of a larger picture that is happening across the country.
Wasting government time and money (our taxes) on pursing these "hardened" criminals is ignorant!

I agree to some point but on the other hand we have enough trouble with drunks clogging our highways I would think if Pot were more accessable that would just make the matter worse No

IMO the way your looking at it is the same as saying "well the boarder is screwed might as well just let it go"

No, regarding pot, the government is spending billions on enforcement and incarceration. The laws are already in place to deal with anyone driving impaired.
Denying medical pot to people is just insane!

Personally, I quit smoking it over 20 years ago (when companies instituted drug testing) but if people want to temper ambition, mental awareness and deal with the munchies, I could care less.

I agree with all of this. Like I said I dont care what crap people want to do in their own homes as long as it stays there.

being a former smoker myself, i feel i am qualified to speak on this. i do believe we are wasting tons of money going after people who are essentially harmless when they do this in the confines of their own home.

most stoners (i know) do smoke and drive, but having a preference they'd rather stay home on the couch w/ a bong a bag, and the simpsons.

as you stated, it does temper ambition, mental awareness etc. my biggest concern on this part is - consenting adults, fine...but i worry for the younger generations and how it may affect things over the long term.

don't get me wrong, i believe this all starts at home with the parents...

Correct.

By the same token, instead of incarceration, there should be mandatory rehab for these people.

I think I'd be about the same in state of mind terms, if I smoked two small bowls after work than I am drinking a martini before dinner and two or three glasses of wine after the kid is in bed. And, I'd be healthier. But, it's against the law, so it's not for me nowdays.

Seriously, smoking helped me. I used to go vegan and no booze and drop weight easy. Back from when I tried to be a wrestler, but then I used speed too.

I smoke regularly and feel I am also fairly qualified to speak on this topic. I've been a regular smoker for 3 years. I've never seen 1 fight where either of the persons are under the influence of marijuana. The number of drunken fights I've witnessed is endless. Also, I've never heard of any of my stoned friends wrecking their cars. Regular smokers tend to have no problems driving when they are high. Hell, I drive safer to avoid the 5-0. However, I wouldn't trust someone behind the wheel that isn't used to driving while under the influence of marijuana.
I think it should be legal to possess under 1 ounce (or some fixed number) of pot, legal to smoke in your home, and legal to carry on the street. However, I think smoking and driving should be punished similarly to drinking and driving.
