Default TD sues hotel for assault

Ex-Bronco sues hotel

Terrell Davis says bouncers assaulted him because of race

By Karen Abbott, Rocky Mountain News
November 2, 2005

Former Denver Broncos running back Terrell Davis has sued a Hollywood hotel and its nightclub, alleging he was assaulted by bouncers and thrown out for defending a black acquaintance who had been told not to speak to a white waitress.

Davis, now of Riverside, Calif., filed the lawsuit Friday in Los Angeles Superior Court.

The suit alleges that the incident occurred Sept. 18 during an "after-party" following the Emmy awards show that was hosted by TV Guide magazine at the Hotel Roosevelt's Tropicana club and restaurant. Davis was an invited guest, the lawsuit said.

Davis, who is black, alleges that an unnamed black acquaintance with whom he had been speaking at the party started a conversation with a white waitress. A hostess, Amanda Scheer-Demme, stepped between the acquaintance and the waitress and told the acquaintance "in a condescending manner that he could not talk to the white waitresses," the lawsuit alleges.

"Upon seeing how rudely his acquaintance had been treated by Scheer-Demme, Davis went to speak with her," the lawsuit said. "Scheer-Demme took the same condescending attitude towards Davis."

Scheer-Demme could not be located for comment Tuesday. Hotel executive coordinator Stephanie Anderson said she knew nothing about the lawsuit and could not comment on it, and that the hotel's general manager was unavailable.

"The white waitress then stepped between Davis and Scheer- Demme," the lawsuit continued. "As if to dismiss him, the waitress placed her hand on Davis's chest to push him aside. Davis asked the waitress to remove her hand. She snapped at Davis with a derogatory comment. Davis then turned around and walked away," the lawsuit said.

It said Davis went back to socializing with other guests.

"It was then that two goons in plain clothes approached Davis," the lawsuit alleges. It said the two men told Davis to leave and did not answer when Davis asked them why.

"The two goons grabbed Davis and attempted to forcibly remove him," the lawsuit said. "Apparently not happy that Davis would resist the physical assault, (one of the men) began to choke Davis. The security thugs then wrestled Davis to the floor. It was not until one of the event guests came to Davis's assistance that Scheer-Demme's jack-booted henchmen released Davis."

The lawsuit said Davis suffered bruising around his neck and other injuries. It seeks unspecified damages.

Davis contends in the lawsuit that he was physically assaulted and forcibly removed from the hotel because he is black.

"In a throwback to an era when a black man who gazed upon a white woman would be lynched, that despicable practice has reared its ugly head in the form of club bouncers who physically assaulted a black man who dared to speak with L.A.'s newest club host, Amanda Scheer- Demme," the lawsuit said.

Davis, drafted by the Denver Broncos in 1995, led the team to Super Bowl victories in the 1997 and 1998 seasons and was named Most Valuable Player of Super Bowl XXXII, the lawsuit said.

I wish TD the best. From personal experience, there are too many club employees and bouncers out there who think they can do whatever they want on their premises.

I was also shocked to hear that TD now calls Riverside home!

This kind of stuff used to happen in Jackson, Mississippi all the time. It was only a matter of time before Hollywood, California was exposed as a seething cauldron of racial hatred.

Seriously, is this a joke?

If it's not a joke TD's lawyer is about to make Terrell out to be a cartoon of a man.

I hate to call TD a lier, but I just find that very hard to believe. He was assaulted because he was black? Come on. I find it hard to believe that Davis was at a redneck hotel in the backwoods of Mississippi or Alabama, which he wasn't. He was an invited guest and I'm sure their security knew who he was. I'm just not buying this. Now none of us were there, so I guess we can only go by what we see in print. I still don't buy it though.

I don't think he's lying for two reasons --

1) He got paid playing football, and now he's got a sweet gig doing work for NFL Network. He doesn't need the money or anything, unless he has a massive coke problem we don't know about.

2) I don't necesarily know that security did know who he was. I don't want to take anything away from the guy, but he didn't play that long, and he's been out of football for a what, 5 years now? I'm just saying, a lot of football players, if they're not mega-stars, you might not know who they were unless you were a fan of that team. QB's get a lot of face time, so generally people know them, but a lot of other positions don't get that same face time. I know he was a SuperBowl MVP, but nontheless, I just find it plausible that they didn't know who he was.

Actually Riverside is east of L.A. so it's not much closer to SD, and it's a real craphole. If he wanted to live in between LA and SD he should have moved to orange county.

Rivertucky? Crackside?
Actually, the 909 isnt quite what it used to be back when Barroid and the Zodiac murderer were here. And besides, a certain member (ahem!) of this forum lives in this area now and I'm sure he isnt lowering the standards here any more than Raider fan

Give me a break! When a black man ventures north of 1-10 into the upscale communities of Los Angeles, yuppies panic and send a flurry of stress calls to the LAPD.

My only problem with the 909 is the smog and the continuous urban sprawl. The San Bernardino Mountains are beautiful and majestic if you happen to live within 5 miles of them because you can never see them. Living anywhere in Southern California still beats living in Kansas City

Jack Booted Henchmen...

Bouncers love to rough people up...he was at an "after hours" party, which always amused me...like the liquor isn't still flowing...

TD's friend started hitting on a waitress, and she didn't like it...sounds like typical idiotic behavior all around...TD, take a cold shower before you make a fool of yourself. This is something I would expect out of Michael Irvin or Steven A. Smith....then again, I wasn't there...the stone cold fact is when this goes to trial, your going to have 15 different stories from 15 different people....unless there were some other black dudes there...2 brothas vs. 13 crackas... The thugs will show up coat and tie and act civilized...

I'm surprised TD doesn't understand his media persona doesn't need this kind of event...regardless or not if he was roughed up...I'm not saying he wasn't assaulted whatsoever...last night, bouncers probably assaulted 500 people nationwide...welcome to the club TD...

You got...JACKED UP...

One time in Vegas, me and my buddy were cruising some casino..can't remember which one...minding our own business...had a buzz on...big surprise..and goons grabbed him and dragged him into a back room...seems this one guy had made big trouble there and it was a classic case of mistaken identity...they shook him down good till they saw his ID...then they showed us a video of them REALLY beating this guy down and it was like his clone...the owner apologized...the next day we went to the top office and the owner could care less and asked what we wanted...I should of said 5000 but I just wanted an apology...Vegas has a very dark side....

I don't know, the article claims that 1) they physically tried to remove him from the location, and 2) that the hostess made a derogatory remark to TD. If that derogatory remark was something like "shut up you stupid ****er" don't you think his cause is rather justified? We don't know what was said, but it was enough for TD to try avoiding conflict by walking away from her.

Also, at parties like this (a big after party for a major awards show) you have hundreds, potentially thousands, of guests circulating through. Do you really think Terrell Davis is a big enough name to be recognized on sight at a party centered around the entertainment industry? As someone who has been to a few after parties ladden with pseudo-celebrities like TD I can see how they wouldn't have known who he was and saw him as some trouble maker.

Best of luck to him, I hope he gets the vindication he's seeking.

So, you're saying that (on the word of a reporter) that the hostess is guilty? Why wasn't Jake Plummer guilty of trashing the fans (on the word of a reporter)?

Personally, the whole story is a little one sided. Oh, and unrealistic.

No, I was just giving a legitimate rebuttle to all the people in here saying it was probably stupid on TD's part to bring this case against them. It is just a single news report, but apparently something TD felt serious enough to warrant a law suit. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt that he feels its justified, and so I hope it works out well for him.

That doesn't mean I hope he wins his case, just that he gets his case heard in a fair court of law where a jury or judge can make an unbiased judgement when presented with the facts.
