Some of cinema's best death scenes aren't very violent or graphic. For example, Janet Leigh in Psycho.

I love this thread. Here are ten hard goodbyes that rank pretty high on the wouldn't-want-to-go-that-way list. In alphabetical order.

Alien - The chest bursting birth of the 'lil Alien. Classic moment in cinema.

Casino - Nicky Santoro (Joe Pesci) forced to watch his baby brother beaten savagely with baseball bats and buried still breathing, while seconds away from receiving the same grisly fate.

Cube - I posted a thread about this lesser known gem of a film back in January. The opening scene, where the hapless victim is sliced into small pieces by super thin razor wire, has been duplicated/stolen repeatedly by several films with far bigger budgets in recent years, but never to better effect.

Dawn of the Dead (1978) - The Mexican Hell's Angel who stopped to take his blood pressure at a coin-op machine in the zombie infested mall. He was swiftly overwhelmed by rotting reanimated dead, his stomach torn open, and his entrails pulled out and consumed before his horrified eyes, buffet-style, as he died.

The old gut pull and chomp quickly became a cliche for zombie movies unconcerned about violence ratings. Still, the first time Romero and Savini trotted it out in DOTD, it was a shocking moment in a movie that had already desensitized its audience to unbelievable carnage.

Deep Blue Sea - In my mind, their have only been three good shark movies ever. The classic Jaws, the sadly poignant Open Water and the underrated little guilty pleasure Deep Blue Sea. A group of marine scientists are trapped in a research facility by a group of super intelligent and super aggressive sharks. At one point, while everybody is totally freaked out over their impending future as Shark Chow, Samuel L Jackson delivers one of his classic fire and brimstone speeches. This speech was a pep talk about how they were all going to work together, kill the sharks and get out of their alive. Everybody is starting to feel better when a giant shark busts out of the water behind Jackson, devours him in one bite, and slides back under the surface. Startling as hell and very effective in conveying utter helplessness and terror.

The Omen - A couple good deaths in this creepy film, but none better than the Plate Glass Decapitation. This movie was also the first time a lot of people in this country ever saw a Rottweiler and some of them got really freaked out.

Reservior Dogs - That cop got thrown in a trunk, beaten soundly by career criminals, tied to a chair, had his ear cut off, was doused with gasoline and nearly immolated, and finally shot in matter of fact fashion by Chris Penn.

Saving Private Ryan - Here's a scene I'll include because it was just so personally upsetting. The death of the Jewish private. The one who kept making a point of showing captured Nazi soldiers his Star of David and identifying himself as Juden. He loses a knife fight to a German soldier that is simply grueling to watch. I was literally contorting in my seat pulling for him to win. When the Jerry turned the battle in his favor and plunged the knife in his chest, I was totally devastated.

Sin City - Marv (Mickey Rourke) taking out Elijah Wood's little vulpine cannibal boy. He cut off his arms and legs and fed the guy to his own pet wolf. Wolf Boy smirked it up, but I know that **** hurt.

Zombie - Not a big fan of the overrated Fulci, but the eyeball into a giant splinter of wood scene is harsh and memorable.

I think that guy was cringing in the hallway, while the Jewish private was fighting for his life. On the other hand, he was a war reporter and not trained as soldier. He also had to carry the guilt of his inaction with him for the rest of his life. Shakespeare said a coward dies a thousand deaths, a brave man tastes death, but once.

Some of the worst ones, you never actually see.

I still have nightmares about the execution device in the Long Ships - a 1963 film with Widmark & Portier. Vikings vs. Moors, basically.

Anyway, it had this thing called "The "Mare of Steel" which was a huge curved blade, about 50-60 feet long, with a horsehead on top. Prisoners were forced to climb and ride down on their exposed bellies, hands tied, so it sliced them in half as they slid down the blade. For good measure, there was a bed of steel spikes at the bottom.

Portier was trying to convince Widmark and his Viking band to cooperate, so he arranged a "demonstration." One of the moorish soldiers was involuntarily "volunteered" to serve as an example.

They never actually showed the slide - - just the looks on people's faces, and the sound of the thunk at the end - - but it was enough.

Yeah he was and I don't care if he was a priest, reporter, whatever. You don't cringe and watch/listen to a fellow soldier dying due to your inability to act.

Shakespeare schmuspeare. The last virtue I would want with a fellow combatant (except for the enemy) is cowardice.

I've seen Braveheart damn near 20 times but I've only seen the final scene when William Wallace is being executed once.

Not to reprise Jaws again, but I always thought the scene where the dude gets eaten and his leg is the only thing that's left as it floats to the bottom of the ocean was pretty stunning. Talk about your reverse dismemberment.

And the Braveheart diembowlement will stick with me for the rest of my life. I had never considered dying like that before. Talk about unpleasant. That messes up your whole day.

I think, in this example, words like trait or characteristic would better convey your distate than the word virtue.

I'm sure there are some soldiers who acquit themselves less bravely than others in every conflict. I think it added a lot of realism to the film.

Some great ones mentioned already, I'll throw ina few of my own.

Audition-The pretty young girl talks so lovingly to the man as she brutally tortures him, including smiling while sawing off his foot with a piece of wire.

The Serpent and the Rainbow-Tied to a chair, tighty whities around his ankles, a hammer and a railroad spike. If you haven't seen it, get ready to squirm in your seat when you do.

Last House on the Left-Mom's revenge.

I Spit On Your Grave-Take your pick. This one's chock full of disturbing scenes of violence.
