broncos notes DBs starting to get healthy By Bill Williamson Denver Post Staff Writer For the fifth straight game, the midweek Broncos watch centers around a secondary that has weathered one injury after another. While this week's infirmary list continues to be decorated with defensive backs, early reports are more positive. Coach Mike Shanahan said he is hopeful cornerback Champ Bailey and safety Nick Ferguson will play Sunday at the Meadowlands against the New York Giants after both players practiced some Wednesday. Bailey, who's listed as probable, is coming off a left hamstring injury that has hampered him for four weeks. Ferguson is questionable after suffering a sprained right ankle in the Broncos' 28-20 win over New England on Sunday. Ferguson could be upgraded if he continues to perform well in practice. "I am playing Sunday," Ferguson said. Bailey left Sunday's game with soreness. He wasn't available for comment Wednesday. Should Ferguson suffer a setback, Marques Anderson and Curome Cox would likely play bigger roles. Sam Brandon, who replaced Ferguson, suffered a pectoral injury in the fourth quarter against the Patriots and is expected to miss the next three weeks. He said he's targeting the Nov. 13 game at Oakland for a return. Meanwhile, right tackle George Foster practiced and is listed as probable. He suffered a second-degree medial collateral ligament injury in the second quarter Sunday but finished the game. Another Manning Indianapolis quarterback Peyton Manning's success against Denver is well documented. The Colts' star has helped knock Denver out of the playoffs the past two years. Little brother is open to suggestions. Giants quarterback Eli Manning plays the Broncos for the first time, and plans to make a call to Indianapolis. "I'll talk to him (Peyton) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Advertisement -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- this week and it may come up, but I don't think he's going to tell us something that we're going to put in our game plan," Eli Manning said in conference call. He said it's rare he will discuss a common opponent with his brother. "If we play a team, it will come up in conversation, but it's not like we're sitting there taking notes and watching film together and going through breakdowns," Eli Manning said. While the Broncos are hoping for more success against Eli than they have had against Peyton, Shanahan said Eli Manning has been impressive, despite having started just 12 games. The Giants are leading the NFL in points per game average. Seeing old buddies Linebacker D.J. Williams has wanted to play against tight end Jeremy Shockey since the two were college teammates at Miami. Sunday, Williams will get that opportunity. And Williams knows exactly what to expect: an earful. "He's one of the biggest trash talkers," Williams said. "The way he is now is the way he was in college. He was a good teammate, but he talks a lot to opponents. ... I can't wait to face him." Bill Williamson can be reached at 303-820-5450 or bwilliamson@denverpost.com.
