Default The most important to our defense????

Champ Bailey has been out a few games yet our secondary has played pretty well anyway....this makes me change my opinion on the defensive player we need the most on our defense...

So I ask my fellow knowledgable Bronco fans....

Who is the one player on defense we can least afford to lose?
Please feel free to throw in your second and third choices as well.

I say we can least afford to lose Trevor Pryce...he is a must for us...

honorable mention goes to #2 Al Wilson......#3 Champ Bailey

There is no one player more important than another on a defense...it's only as good as the sum of it's parts.

Warren is a must also....that's tough....I can't bump him for Pryce, Wilson, or Bailey though....

Warren has been a monster for us though....

Champ. The Defense has played decent in his absence.... wait until he comes back!

Champ in the game Denver 28 NE 3
Champ out of the game Denver 0 NE 17

Denver's defensive scheme is largely run on what Champ can do. Hopefully he can play for the rest of the year and then the defense will not only get by but dominate.

Importance of Position on a Defense:

#1. Defensive Tackle
#2. Cornerback
#3. Defensive End
#4. Outside Linebacker
#5. Inside Linebacker
#6. Safety

Not to say that this means that Ekuban is worth more than DJ Williams. But all other things being equal, this is a good rubric to start from.

Keep in mind this is only in a 4-3 defense, Linebackers are key in a 3-4.

With that said my list runs as such.

1. Champ Bailey
2. Trevor Pryce
3. Gerard Warren
4. Darrent Williams
5. Al Wilson

Now I think we can argue from this that even though Champ is the single most important, we are only a 10-6 team (last year) without Trevor and Gerrard #s 2 and 3. Thus, almost any two on this list is in sum more important than any other.

But please, do look at Denver vs. KC stats before and after Champ, and Denver vs. New England stats before and after champ. And please think for a moment where we would be now without the interception Champ took to the house on Drew Brees.

Champ Bailey. Remember the Dolphins game as well. Wasnt it 7-3 when he went out.

His presence allows the Broncos to be aggressive.

I don't think you can say one player or possition is more important than another. I know it's cliche' to suggest that it's a team effort, but it is. We do have big playmakers at all three levels and veterans with leadership at all three levels. Some are both. That coupled with the youth and speed makes for a complete unit. The rest is execution.

Good without Bailey. Great with him. evidence the two halves of the Pats game. First half, with bailey, Patriots had a hard time doing anything. Second half, rookies galore, let some big plays develop downfield. Better with then without.

One thing we catn forget about the PAt game is our DL was getting mauled by their OL. Warren tackled, Pryce getting hugged everyplay was a huge reason the Pats had time to pick apart the secondary.

Why Fergy of course...he's Mr. Ballhawk afterall and his whopping lifetime total of 2 INTs is what takes that secondary to a whole another level!!!!!!!

Not so sure he's the most important, but I gotta commend the coaching staff for finding this kid...he's good.
