Default Broncos bucked by HOF

Broncos bucked by Hall

SoCals link: http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcont...107aa21ae.html

Talent-rich franchise has only one player in Canton

There are 28 established franchises in the NFL, and every one of them has at least three players whom their fan base believes have been slighted by Hall of Fame voters.

The Cowboys have played in an NFL-record eight Super Bowls and have only five players in the Hall of Fame. Seems a bit light, doesn't it?

Well, how about the Denver Broncos? They have played in six Super Bowls, second-most to the Cowboys, and have only one player enshrined in Canton – John Elway.

AP
Broncos fans believe tackle Gary Zimmerman should be in the Hall of Fame. The trio of Broncos whom the Denver faithful believe should already be in Canton are offensive tackle Gary Zimmerman, halfback Floyd Little and linebacker Karl Mecklenburg.

Broncos fans are as passionate about Zimmerman as the Cowboys fans are about Rayfield Wright. Wright made the NFL all-decade team for the 1970s. Zimmerman made the all-decade team in both the 1980s and '90s.

Little retired in 1975 as the NFL's seventh all-time leading rusher. The six backs ahead of him have all been enshrined in the Hall of Fame. Mecklenburg played in six Pro Bowls and three Super Bowls.

All you Dallas fans who believe there is a prejudice in Canton against the Cowboys – Denver fans share your sentiments about their Broncos.

The doorman at my hotel last weekend told me that Denver has more annual sunshine than any city in the country. I believe him. I soaked in three days of that sunshine under cloudless skies. Now, on to football. Here's my take on the NFL this week:

Rod Smith is going to be the one that bugs me the most - assuming he doesn't do enough to get in.

There is no doubt that he has played in an era where WR numbers have been inflated. And there is no doubt that there will be WRs with numbers similar to his that don't get in.

The intangibles are what should do it for him. The first one is the undrafted free agent thing. The Hall of Fame should be about those who have done something extraordinary. Well, the number one undrafted WR of all time makes him extraordinary. And where would his stats be if he had played more his first two or three years in the league, like a more highly-touted college WR would have done?

Other intangibles that should be considered:

-Two Super Bowl Championships
-A relentless work ethic
-A relatively injury-free career
-Longevity with one team
-A team approach - he'd do anything asked without complaining.

He is what the Hall of Fame should be all about.

Rod is the best undrafted WR of all time, isn't he?

You didn't mention the main reason. Rod is the ONLY undrafted player to reach the top level of proficiency as a WO. That alone should merit consideration.

That'll make 2. It would be nice to see Atwater, Gradishar, Meck, Little, or someone else to get in. However, I wont hold my breath.

I will say this. I am TIRED of seeing the 70s Steelers getting inducted. Yes, they had a good team. Yes, they won a lot. Yes, they set the stage. But Stallworth? Gimmeabreak. I think if a ham sandwich wore a Steelers outfit in the 70s, they'd induct the damn thing!
