Default Poll: Bush Presidency Judged Unsuccessful

More evidence that independents and even some republicans finally are seeing what Bush is really about.

----------------------------------------------------------------
By WILL LESTER, Associated Press Writer 2 hours, 28 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - For the first time, more people say George W. Bush's presidency will be judged as unsuccessful than say it will be seen as a success, a poll finds.

Forty-one percent of respondents said Bush's presidency will be seen as unsuccessful in the long run, while 26 percent said the opposite. Thirty-five percent said it was too early to tell, according to the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press.

In January, 36 percent said successful and 27 percent said unsuccessful.

The increasing pessimism about Bush's long-term prospects comes at a time when many polls have found the public increasingly is negative about Bush's performance and the direction of the country.

Seven in 10 said they want the next president to offer policies and programs that are different from the Bush administration's.

Only half said they wanted the next president to offer different policies in 2000, at the end of the Clinton presidency. By a 2-1 margin, people said the Bush administration has had a negative impact on politics and the way government works.

People were inclined to say Bush's policies have made things worse on a wide range of issues such as the federal budget deficit, the gap between rich and poor, health care, the economy, relations with U.S. allies, the tax system and education. By 47 percent to 30 percent, those surveyed said Bush has improved the situation with national security.

Republicans give the president mixed reviews in many of these areas. Almost half of Republicans said Bush's policies have made the deficit worse and just 12 percent say he has improved that situation.

The poll of 1,500 adults was taken Oct. 6-10 and has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

"Eight in ten historians responding rate the current presidency an overall failure."

Historians vs. George W. Bush (#66933)
by Editor on August 20, 2005 at 3:35 PM
By Robert S. McElvaine

Mr. McElvaine teaches history at Millsaps College. He is the author of EVE'S SEED: BIOLOGY, THE SEXES AND THE COURSE OF HISTORY (McGraw-Hill).

Although his approval ratings have slipped somewhat in recent weeks, President George W. Bush still enjoys the overall support of nearly half of the American people. He does not, however, fare nearly so well among professional historians.

A recent informal, unscientific survey of historians conducted at my suggestion by George Mason University’s History News Network found that eight in ten historians responding rate the current presidency an overall failure.

Of 415 historians who expressed a view of President Bush’s administration to this point as a success or failure, 338 classified it as a failure and 77 as a success. (Moreover, it seems likely that at least eight of those who said it is a success were being sarcastic, since seven said Bush’s presidency is only the best since Clinton’s and one named Millard Fillmore.) Twelve percent of all the historians who responded rate the current presidency the worst in all of American history, not too far behind the 19 percent who see it at this point as an overall success.

Well the poll of the public is significant, that is legit. The historians poll is not too legit though. Historians, like most academics, tend to be leftists so there is inherent bias there, which I dont think their professionalism will overcome. I certainly have not been happy with Bush on some issues, most notably the budget deficit and the nomination of Harriet Miers. But on other issues, I am pleased.

Plurality Now Sees Bush Presidency as Unsuccessful

Discontent with Bush and State of The Nation Ever Higher

President George W. Bush's poll numbers are going from bad to worse. His job approval rating has fallen to another new low, as has public satisfaction with national conditions, which now stands at just 29%. And for the first time since taking office in 2001, a plurality of Americans believe that George W. Bush will be viewed as an unsuccessful president.

The latest national survey by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press, conducted Oct. 6-10 among 1,500 adults, finds the president beset by problems on multiple fronts. The president's overall job approval rating has slipped to 38%. And on a number of issues, ranging from the federal budget deficit to relations with U.S. allies, majorities or pluralities say that Bush's policies have made things worse, not better.

Bush's job rating continues to drop

http://www.cnn.com/2005/POLITICS/10/...ush/index.html

Poll shows president's performance approval at low point

(CNN) -- President Bush's job approval rating continues to plummet, with 39 percent of Americans surveyed in the latest CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll supporting his performance, compared to 58 percent expressing disapproval.

The approval rating was lowest the poll has recorded during Bush's presidency, down from 45 percent in a survey taken September 26-28, and the disapproval rating was up from 50 percent.

The two Republican firms have Bush in the forties... everyone else in the thirties...

How sad that the best they can do is to inflate Bush's numbers is up to 40-44%.

IF Iraq is stabilized and the Iraqi troops can handle their own security by the time Bush leaves office, he will be looked at as being a fairly successful president. If, on the other hand, we leave Iraq too soon and the insurgents go on a regionwide murder rampage, then his legacy will go the way of Lyndon Johnson. Bush has 3 more years to cement whatever legacy he will leave behind.

Lyndon Johnson's legacy went that way because he escalated the war. I don't know if I admire people who actually think we can stabilize Iraq or want to scratch my head at the absurdity of thinking that. So why didn't Bush tell us we were going into fight insurgents at the beginning? Oh that's right, there weren't any at that time.

Bingo.

Just like there wasn't any al Qaeda presence in Iraq or connection between Iraq and al Qaeda before the alcoholic-in-chief invaded.

It's not just your opinion - it's the opinion of everyone in America (except the lunatic fringe 28% who still believe the country is headed in the right direction under the court-appointed pinhead.)
