HEAVY PRICE: Not only did Karl Paymah get the buckle-the-knees glare from Broncos coach Mike Shanahan after his personal-foul penalty in the fourth quarter, but the rookie defensive back can expect to be fined by the NFL.
Players who are called for leading with the crown of their helmets while making a tackle routinely are fined $5,000, but on some bigger hits in the middle of the field, the penalty can cost significantly more.
Paymah was penalized for leading with his helmet, hitting Redskins receiver Santana Moss, who was on the ground, after a play was over.
"I just asked him what he did," Shanahan said. "I didn't see the shot. You can't lower your head. He barely even hit the guy, but . . . you can't lead with your helmet. If you lead with your helmet it's a spear. That's just a young guy not knowing the rules. He may think he knows the rules, but you can't lead with that helmet."
ETC.: Former Broncos running back Quentin Griffin was in Foxboro, Mass., for a workout with the New England Patriots, the Broncos' opponent this week. Griffin was on the Broncos' active roster a little more than one week ago but was released when defensive back Curome Cox was added to the roster just before the game against Jacksonville . . . If rookie tight end Wesley Duke clears waivers, he is expected to be added to the Broncos' practice squad today. As of the close of business Monday, no team had put in a claim for Duke. He was released Saturday when Cox again was added to the active roster.
