Default A Salute to the Smilin' Assassin

In case anyone has forgotten, Steve Atwater will be inducted into the ring of fame during halftime of Sunday's game against Washington. He will get to join his former teammate Dennis Smith forever on the walls of the Denver Broncos. If this doesn't help get the crowd fired up, I don't know what will.

As with Dennis Smith, I'll always remember your bone crushing hits. Although you didn't play in the original Orange Crush era, you would have fit in great. You never missed a game in your ten years donning the orange and blue. You played a big part in those two Lombardi's and I'll be forever greatful. Thanks, Smilin Assassin, for ten great years and many memories!

How about a little love for Mr. Atwater?

He was absolutely great!

I must admit, however, that the one play that sticks out was a bad one! I was lucky enough to go to the Superbowl of all Superbowls (Denver GB) and had crappy seats about 7 rows up in the end zone. He missed that interception that was right in his hands in the end zone like 20 feet from me. Would have ended it earlier.

Still love ya Steve!!!

"The hit: One of the hardest hits in NFL history was Steve Atwater's crushing of huge Chiefs running back Christian Okoye on Sept. 17, 1990. Making it better was that Broncos public-relations man Jim Saccomano had persuaded Atwater to wear a microphone that night, preserving the sound for the hit from Denver's 24-23 win and turning into an instant classic for NFL films. By the way, John Elway hit Vance Johnson for 49 yards on fourth down with time running out to set up the winning field goal."

A couple years back I bought the orange Atwater jersey for 30 clams on ebay. Brand new authentic 75th year NFL anniv edition. Bad *ss man. I wore it to a game in a sports bar once here in AZ and got offers galore to buy it off my back. Shows the respect that Atty gets for being the best headhunting ballhawking SS in the bizz. Wish I were there for the ceremony.

God, that list is a blast from the past! Showing my age, but have very clear memories of all but Lionel (although I remember him playing against us later) and Goose.

I still think Louis Wright is the most under-rated Bronco of all time, and deserves the HOF more than any of the other Broncos that deserve it (Little, Gradishar, ...)

(music please) thanks for the memories...

That reminds me. At the Denver/GB Superbowl we were offered $3000 cash per ticket at the door for our tickets (cost me about $500 each). I laughed and told him, there is probably some price at which I would break (thinking like $500,000 - something that would change my life forever) but he was WAY far away!
