Default Sunday NFL report

Don't get too excited. My work schedule keeps me busy. This is the first weekend I have had off in 3 weeks. I'll post this (NFL Report) when I can. Or when I need some cheap "REP"!
Just remember you can always visit my good buddy's site WWW.BENMALLER.COM.

---------

Mike Tice of the Vikings is in big trouble. Let's count the ways: He embarrassed himself, the Vikings and the NFL and was fined $100,000 (10 percent of his $1 million salary) for scalping Super Bowl tickets; he's in the last year of his contract; the team was sold to Zigy Wilf in June and new owners like to have their own coaches; and the Vikes, supposed to be serious Super Bowl contenders, are off to an 0-2 start.

Mike Shanahan lasted 20 games as Raiders coach before Al Davis fired him. We're wondering if Norv Turner, who is up to 18 games, will even make it to 20 with his 0-2 start following a 5-11 season. The Raiders are headed to 0-3 with a game in Philly today.

Brett Favre is off to the worst start of his NFL career, the Packers are 0-2, and there is mounting evidence that this will be it for the 36-year-old star quarterback. Ted Thompson, however, doesn't subscribe to that theory. Yes, Thompson has a vested interest in how Favre performs. After all, he's the Packers' first-year general manager. But Thompson, a former NFL linebacker and respected personnel man, is convinced that it's too soon to cast final judgment on either Favre or the Packers.

The Browns are happy with running back Reuben Droughns. He has become a starter, and his work ethic and attitude have the team thinking about trading Lee Suggs. Heav: To bad Suggs isnt a DL. Denver would be all over this trade.

One defensive coach whose team has played the Patriots this season believes he's solved the mystery of who's calling the plays in New England. ''[Tom] Brady is running everything at the line of scrimmage," said the defensive assistant, who asked for anonymity. ''In our game, he ran about 70 percent of their offense at the line of scrimmage. ''They give him a bag full of plays and then they let him handle it. That doesn't mean their coaches don't have an influence. They still have to come up with the game plan and the plays they want to run in different situations. ''But in our game it was Brady who was calling things at the line, and why not? It's tough to get him in many rush schemes he doesn't recognize or a protection that makes him vulnerable. He's got more experience in that offense than most of the coaches coaching him. ''[Bill] Belichick doesn't even have a headset on, so how's he calling the plays? Smoke signals? If you think a 28-year-old kid [quarterback coach Josh McDaniels] is doing it, you don't understand much about Belichick. ''In our game, Brady came to the line with several play options given to him, I assume, by the game plan or from the sidelines. But it was Brady who was running things when he got over the ball. It seems to be working."

Sources in DC say that star 'Skins LB LaVar Arrington is 'befuddled' by his lack of use during the first two weeks. Coming off a knee injury, Arrington thought he had the green light to play; yet he's averaged only about 25 snaps in Washington's two contests.

It was nearly closing time at Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen, and the wait staff and kitchen crew of the North Side restaurant were beginning to shut things down for the night. But just when the last few customers were about to pay their checks, the door opened, revealing at least 40 large men and their even bigger appetites. Usually, NFL teams don't dine out as a group, particularly on their nights off. But the New Orleans Saints, who made that trip during their first weekend in San Antonio, aren't a typical NFL team. "It's a special bond we have," Saints linebacker Terrence Melton said. "And it's gotten a lot closer since we've been on this little journey."

The Rams didn't get to use the new shoulder pad cooling system after all against the Cardinals. According to a Rams official, the team was told on Friday that using the cooling compressor was a security risk at Sun Devil Stadium. On Monday morning, after the game, they were told just the opposite - that it would have been no problem using the system. "So somewhere in-between there, somebody's not telling the truth," the Rams official said. The Rams are writing a letter of complaint to the NFL on the subject.

Under Kerry Collins' command since he replaced now-retired Rich Gannon, the Raiders are 3-12 heading into today's matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles at what should be a raucous Lincoln Financial Field. Heav: Damn...... 3-12....

Who Knew? In the history of the league, there have been 440 1,000-yard seasons by running backs, dating back to Beattie Feathers, who in 1934 piled up 1,034 yards for the Chicago Bears in what is considered by most people to be the first true year of the NFL. In all the years since then, only 30 times has a running back 30 or older managed to rush for 1,000 yards. That is only 7 percent of the total. It all added up over the last 71 years to this simple fact: Only nine backs over 30 and only three over 32 have ever reached the 1,000-yard level.

The Randy Moss situation is worth monitoring in Oakland. Moss, the biggest acquisition in the NFL during the offseason, is getting his yardage. He leads the NFL with 257 yards in receptions. But personal statistics don't fuel Moss. He wants the ball because he wants to win. The Raiders are 0-2, and Moss hasn't gotten the ball enough to help Oakland get the job done. Amazingly, Kerry Collins didn't throw to Moss on the Raiders' final possession in their 23-17 loss to Kansas City last week, even though Oakland needed a touchdown to win. After the Raiders' final possession, Moss looked confused. Moss won't stand for being shut out. If it continues today in Philadelphia, expect him to blow.

Vikings coach Mike Tice says running back Michael Bennett has never been a fumbler despite two critical fumbles in the loss at Cincinnati last week. Bennett agrees. "I've fumbled maybe five times in five years and just twice while I was at Wisconsin, and I hope it never happens again," he said. The best the Vikings could hope for in a trade for Bennett would be a sixth- or seventh-round draft pick.

Redskins quarterback Patrick Ramsey, a former starter, has requested a trade and has interest in playing for Miami, a close associate said. But keep this in mind: Ramsey ranked 31st in deep-completion percentage last season (according to Scientific Football 2005) and struggled with decision-making when hurried. ''Ramsey can't play,'' Fox's Jimmy Johnson said.

Dolphins rookie Ronnie Brown wasn't shocked by the sharp media criticism of him last week -- ''I expected it to a certain degree'' -- but he took comfort in two unexpected developments. Chiefs running back Priest Holmes, who has the same agent (Todd France) but has never met Brown, sent the rookie a text-message encouraging Brown to call him ''if I need somebody to talk to.'' And Brown said ''a couple guys'' approached him last week 'at Sam's Club and said, `Keep your head up.' That means a lot.''

Steelers coach Bill Cowher was a "bonehead" as a Cleveland Browns assistant coach in the 1980s and knew nothing about coaching defensive backs, former NFL safety Tim Fox said on a weekly TV show in Boston. While previewing today's Patriots-Steelers game at Heinz Field on a NESN sports channel show, Fox said he wasn't impressed with his brief association with Cowher when the Steelers' coach was in the early years of his NFL coaching career and Fox was ending his playing career.

Trevor has no excuse not to have a solid game. With a backup OT and Brown on the other side he should have two sacks and lots of pressure.

And one of those wins came in Denver, of all places. That loss probably cost us a division title and the first home playoff game in 6 years.
