A piece of take

Broncos' off-season emphasis on forcing turnovers has carried over into games

By Lee Rasizer, Rocky Mountain News

ENGLEWOOD - There were times during the Denver Broncos' training camp that the ball changed hands nearly as frequently as a juggler.

"Some days at camp, we'd get eight or nine takeaways," linebacker D.J. Williams said.

The coaching staff nearly had talked itself blue about a lack of such plays for so long that the interceptions and fumbles of August truly stood out.

They also created a quiet confidence that if it finally was happening that frequently in practice, it had to carry over into games.

And through two weeks of the regular season, it has.

The Broncos (1-1) have recovered three fumbles (one by the special teams) and intercepted two passes, including Champ Bailey's 25-yard return for a touchdown Sunday in a 20-17 victory against the San Diego Chargers.

Only the Cincinnati Bengals (10), Chicago Bears (eight), New York Giants (seven), Philadelphia Eagles (six) and Jacksonville Jaguars (six) have more takeaways.

Denver's five takeaways are tied for sixth in the NFL with six other teams.

That's a quantum leap for a team that, for the past two seasons, was one of the league's worst in forcing turnovers, getting 20 in each season.

"It most definitely came from camp," defensive tackle Gerard Warren said. "It's all about...

But wait kaylore, DEN's defense is a huge problem since the offense has scored 13 points a game. If they do not keep it under 13 points Den has no shot to win unless the defense scores a TD every game. Never mind the fact that the offense has ONLY scored their two TD's off of those TO's to boot. This defense needs three+ TO's a game or let's fire COYER!

IMO, the defense had to shoulder the burden of responsibility the first two games because one was away from home to a 3-4 D full of talented players and the next one was against a pretty good defense that has managed to shut down our running game in the past.

In the third game though, the responsibility shifts back over to the offense because we're facing a D we have exploited before and we all know if the offense doesn't play very well then no defense will be able to hold KC for 4 quarters.

good article. Now if Jake can keep it out of the other team's hands, that t/o ratio should start lookin' pretty good...™
