Default Rams Executive Threatens Reporter

Quote:
Team disciplines official for leaving nasty message

Wednesday September 14, 2005 12:25PM

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- An executive with the St. Louis Rams will be reprimanded for leaving a threatening phone message on the voice mail of a St. Louis Post-Dispatch columnist.

The Rams told the Post-Dispatch that team executive Samir Suleiman faces discipline, but declined to say what it would be. A call to the Rams on Wednesday was not returned.
"It's shocking that he would leave a message like that," Rams president John Shaw told the Post-Dispatch. "It's the type of behavior that we don't condone at any level. He will be reprimanded, and it will be handled internally."

On Aug. 28, sports columnist Bernie Miklasz wrote that he was disturbed by "infighting and politics" within the Rams organization, and said executives owe any head coach their support.

"Be it (Mike) Martz or another man, I don't care who sits in the head coach's office at Rams Park. The head coach should be backed, not back-stabbed, by associates," Miklasz wrote.

Suleiman left a message on Miklasz's voice mail, stating, in part, "tell your source that I'm not a back-stabber, I'm a (expletive) throat slasher, and he'll know the difference before it's all said and done."

Suleiman, director of football administration, has worked for the Rams for six years. He assists president of football operations Jay Zygmunt on salary cap issues and contract negotiations.

Shaw said the phone message showed "a lack of judgment. I really don't understand it, to be honest with you."
Such a classy organization.

Jeepers. That guy needs to write for Al Jezzera. The media is the media. In typically weak kneed Martz style, the guy wasn't fired as soon as this came out. That isn't even acceptable on a forum board, yet alone from an team official. I understand the guy was upset about the loss, insulted (maybe), but that was a rather odd way to respond, to say the least. The weirdest thing is he seemed to validate the reporters take. I'm not sure what the hell he meant, If he was threatening the reporter or Martz...How stupid can you possibly be to say that on E-mail to a freaking reporter from the main paper?

Wow. I am shocked and appalled, as everyone should be. That is just plain unacceptable for anyone to say! He should have been immediately fired.

I'm sure ol' Samir will "know the difference before it's all said and done" between being employed and being unemployed.

I pop into Bernie Miklasz's forum on STLToday once in a while. He seems like a nice enough guy.

Bernie's forum:
http://forums.stltoday.com/viewforum.php?f=9

Since SB36 I've gotten a good perspective on the St. Louis media. It's weird because there's only 1 major newspaper and John Hadley is off on the side always embattled with someone.

New York and Boston are media circuses because of their size and notoriety, but the circus in St. Louis takes the cake.

There's no denying that the man being Middle Eastern could probably make things more complicated. I interpreted your post to say that you found it typical of an Arab to make threats like that.

"tell your source that I'm not a back-stabber, I'm a (expletive) throat slasher, and he'll know the difference before it's all said and done."

It seems to me he wasn't referring to either Martz or the reporter but some gutless, no name "source". Seems like if you want to get your perspective reported in the paper, and it includes name calling, you should have the balls to say who you are.

That's what I'd be putting on my resume when I went looking for my new job and hope my new employer would buy it.

Then the world would quit turning and we no longer would find out what was really going on in it. I have nothing but kudos for the tattle-tell industry

Sometimes hired sports geeks really do bring out the worst in humanity with their notorious sources, holier-than-thou attitude and presumptuous takes, but to threaten them? That just seems like a two-bit response to them. I'm sure if this had happened in a New York fishwrap, we'd have seen it sprawled all over the front pages just to sensationalize the whole thing.

Actually, I'm rather suprised we dont hear this kind of thing more often. Especially with hacks like Bob Kravitz out there stinking up the newsprint...

There doesn't appear to be any "source". Miklasz made the comment that members of the Rams front office weren't fully supporting Martz and that the front man in the organization deserves better.

This excitible cretin obviously feels like he's one of the non believers in question, so he decided to start popping off. I think he used the word "source" to try and cover his own ass, when he was clearly threatening Miklasz personally. Very cowardly.
