Dave Hubley, Richmond Va: Len, Whast the word out of Denevr on Shananhans job security, I think some fans are over him and want a fresh approach? What did league insiders say about his drafting?

Len Pasquarelli: (12:15 PM ET ) if you read my columns, you know how often i've taken him to task for his poor drafts . . . the team always has a lot of pikcs, and squanders them . . . as for his shelf-life, well, he's been mr. teflon for a long time, and i don't see bowlen dumping him anytime soon

Boo Hoo Len. Bowlen doesnt do what you want him to. We like Shanny here. Take a deeper look at his drafts. Pretty good if you ask me.

Jeff (Southfield, MI): Do you think that Reggie Williams will break out this year for the Jags? They've talked about implementing a deep-ball passing game, but he's not really that kind of player, is he?

Len Pasquarelli: (12:23 PM ET ) my good friend, pete prisco of sportsline lives in jax and keeps telling me that reggie williams is headed for a big year . . . i didn't see it when i was in theri camp, but i was only there two days . . . i think the guy is a little upright and stiff and doesn't play very fast . . . but, hey, what do i know?

--

I posted this on the other thread since we are hating on Prisco.

An excerpt from today's ESPN.com page 2. At least he recognizes some of the possibilities...

The Peter Gammons Award for "Team with the most tantalizing ifs"
To the Broncos, who probably deserve their own Gammons column at this point. If Jake Plummer can control his mistakes, if Mike Anderson can regain his 2000 form, if Rod Smith and John Lynch have one more quality year left, if Courtney Brown can stay healthy, if they can light a fire under Gerard Warren, if Ashley Lelie can become an elite receiver, if David Terrell can finally find a home ... has any team had more ifs that could potentially result in a fantastic season? Even when you're playing them in "Madden," by the end of a game with six-minute quarters, Madden has you believing that Plummer is Superman, Quentin Griffin is the next Barry Sanders and Jerry Rice still has five years left in him (and Rice and Griffin aren't even with the team any more). Just a bizarre team. And yes, I think this will be the year when Shanahan's head explodes into smithereens on the sidelines.

Man Shanny really is a lightning rod. Not sure what it is about the guy, but people just like to hate on him.

I love the "Mr Teflon" name when the head coach of Pittsburgh -- Len P's hometown -- has lost 3 of 4 AFC Title games at home and no one says a word. How about Marty taking a 12 - 4 team to a first round exit last year? Those accomplishments are no less than what has Shanny being called "Mr Teflon".

I don't see that as hating...sounds pretty reasonable and fairly accurate to me.

Maybe cause he comes off as having the personality of a tree stump. Seriously, the guy doesn't come off as interesting or very likable....You don't have to be likeable but if you aren't you at least need to be interesting and he doesn't give the appearance of being either.

Accept that its one-sided. No one mentions the fact that he has one of the best winning percentages in NFL history. No one mentions the fact that he has 2 Super Bowl trophies (more than Cower, Gruden, Billick, Reid, Vermeil, Marvin Lewis, Marty Ball and the other coaches they like to pimp). He never mentions that Shanny is the only coach in the AFC to field an above .500 football team the past 5 season despite, in his words, having poor drafts.

They usually don't forget to mention he hasn't won a playoff game without Elway...So they don't forget about all the facts.

How is that? His job is to win football games. I'd say he is accomplishing that. Is Bill Bellichick a likable guy? Come on. It's Andy Reid interesting? Seriously. I can understand why Chiefs and Oakland fans don't like Shanny, but what is it about the national media? It like a snowball rolling down hill.

That is stupid, stupid, stupid. How many did Walsh win without Montana? How many has Reid won with Donovan McNab? How many has Billichick won without Brady. That is a pointless argument and truly show the ignorance of people that believe this crap.

I think most find Bellichick interesting in that he has had a different philosophy than most in getting players and has won 3 of the last 4 Super Bowls which makes him very interesting. Reid is fairly likeable and accommodates the fans and media a bit by going on the Rome show and I see him a lot on Eagirls cam on the NFL Network.

I'm not saying it is right but accommadating the media on a regular basis will get you a free pass a lot of the times.

Both of those are related explicitly to a) their geographic locations and b) their relative standing in the league. There is certainly an East Coast bias when it comes to interviewing coaches on show like Jim Rome. Hell the West Coast isn't even up when Rome does his show. Both coaches are considered interesting because their philosophies are the "model" of the NFL right now. I can't wait to see how these coaches are perceived after their 11th year with the same franchises, if they last that long.

Shanahan has the most consistently effective running game in the NFL and it is built on outcasts and low draft picks on the line and in the backfield. That is more interesting to me than anything that any other coach brings to the table. The guy is an offensive genius.

And I'd bet money that a high number of NFL GMs and Head Coaches would tell you the same thing.

Why?

Maybe if he did a little more of this ..... along with having a multi-million dollar stray dog collection that he can't find the heart to have euthanized ( Hicks, Woods, McCleon, etc .... ).

He'd be more likable.

Or ... if he could do an occasional offseason fluff piece from his vineyard in napa valley, that could paint him as interesting.

Or the fact that he was Bronko Nagurski's Pee Wee football coach .....

Sorry Chief fans, i wouldn't trade you guys coaches for anything.

Please! If Shanny were a FA head coach Peterson would be the first guy knocking on his door. Shanny is an excellent head coach and would be unemployed for no less than it took to agree on his multi-millions of dollars if Denver were to let him go.

I doubt it...they both appear to be control freaks and probably wouldn't want to work with each other.

I'm a frequent visitor to the planet ......

I'm well aware of the big Vermeil retirement bash planned amongst Chief fans for the end of this year. And i've also witnessed the muffled groans that arise when he starts hinting that this might not be his last year after all.

From an outsiders view, it seems as if you guys like the guy just enough to let him have his "ride off into the sunset" season .... but not much more.

Kinda like putting off having the "talk" with grandpa about the nursing home until after christmas, and hoping he'll take all of his "knick-knacks" with him ( Hicks, McCleon, Woods etc .... ).
