Default News On Rice Retiring As A 49er....

Just heard while watching CNN that the 49ers will have to release a player from their 53 man roster to allow Rice to sign so he can retire as a 9ner. The coach said he doesn't plan on doing it. Wow.

Thoughts?

Coach Nolan is an Ass. How hard would it be to cut and sign back a vet making league min. I am sure there are a few players that would love to be the answer to that trivia question.

Wouldn't want to break up that chemistry. They might win three games this year.

I think Rice would rather forget those dark days of his life.

Nah, he was good for us, did his job and respected in the end by the Raiders for honoring his request to be released to pursue other prospects.

I personally don't want the guy to be in our HOF because we don't deserve the credit for his game but if the guy is forced to pick a team, I am sure the Raiders will be more than happy to give a 1 day contract to honor the best WR to ever play the game.

I thought he retired two days ago as a Bronco?

I don't blame Nolan. It's all pomp and circumstance anyway.

He never played a down for the Donks officially, and yes Taco, it does not surprise me that you side with Nolan on this issue.

I'm not siding with anyone. I'm just stating that I don't find it particularly important and figure the whole "retiring as a ________" thing is a joke when you aren't playing a down for that team.

If he wanted to retire as a 49er, he should have tried making their roster, not ours.

He wasn't invited to play for a roster spot on the 49ers

I don't care. But the niners suck. Sure they're going nowhere so they want to play young and rice possibly would retard their wrs.

While Jerry does deserve to retire as a 49er, he can't be dropping this on them now. It's like 3 days before the season starts, they're getting ready for their season-opener, and they shouldn't be putting everything on hold to figure out who to cut, signing Jerry to a contract, etc.

Although at some point, be it after the season is over, or some other time when it's convenient for the team, they should let him retire a 49er.

For a cold-hearted, glass eyed, egotistical maniac, that Shanahan sure found a way to get the message across to Jerry that it was time to hang 'em up.

The "Retirement" Ceremony may be a scam but it's become a tradition. It's not just the coaches and players. I certainly enjoyed my chance to say goodbye to Atwater.

Jerry sold a lot of tickets in SF. Those people should have the opportunity of a final wave. But then hey, the fans are just the open wallet part of the NFL equation.

Yea, you are probably right here, he has plenty of time to retire a 49er

The bad guys in this situation is the league office... All they'd have to do is give the 49ers a temporary roster limit of 54 and allow the 49ers to bring Rice in and retire. It would be no big deal and no other team would complain... I don't blame Nolan at all...

Those were my thoughts too. He's signing a one day contract. I think the league can make an exception.

I agree with your take, but Jerry Rice shouldn't have retired 5 years ago. At age 40, Rice had a 1000 yard season which earned him a trip to the Pro Bowl.

That makes sense. I heard Rice was waiting until the season ends.
