SAN DIEGO (Sept. 3, 2005) -- In moves that club officials say show the improvement of the Chargers, two of their draft picks, tackle Wesley Britt and guard Wes Sims, were among the 21 players cut to get down to the 53-player limit.

All-Pro tight end Antonio Gates did not take an active roster spot as he remains on the roster exempt list through the opener against the Dallas Cowboys, the final game of a three-game suspension for missing a team-mandated deadline for reporting to camp.
"I don't know that we missed," Schottenheimer said about the club's evaluations of Britt, a fifth-round pick, and Sims, a sixth-rounder. "I think a better way to look at it in my view is that we saw the development of Leander Jordan and Kris Dielman. Denver got rid of a third-round pick, didn't they?" he said, referring to Maurice Clarett.
"Ultimately you are looking for those that give you the best chance of contributing and making the football team. But there are no assurances regardless of where a player has been chosen."
Meanwhile, quarterback Drew Brees and right tackle Shane Olivea aren't expected to miss practice time after suffering mild ankle sprains Sept. 1 in a preseason victory against San Francisco.
Schottenheimer said he's sticking to his diagnosis that Shawne Merriman, the draft's 12th overall pick, will miss 2-4 weeks after spraining an ankle Aug. 26. That means he would be sidelined for the opener, at a minimum.
I would love to see more depth on our O-line, if not here, then from somewhere else.
