Default Bailey probably sidelined until opener; Marques Anderson's deal extended

By Bill Williamson
Denver Post Staff Writer

The Broncos have decided star cornerback Champ Bailey will spend the next 17 days dedicated to rehabilitating a pesky hamstring injury.

Coach Mike Shanahan said Wednesday in all likelihood Bailey will miss the team's final two preseason games in hopes of being ready for the regular- season opener against Miami at Dolphins Stadium on Sept. 11.

Bailey, who didn't play in the Broncos' first two preseason games, has twice aggravated the injury. He hasn't fully participated in practice since the first full week of training camp.

Rookie cornerback Darrent Williams, who started the first two preseason games, is expected to continue to spell Bailey.

It's no surprise Bailey is being shelved for the preseason. He clearly won't be pushed to play Saturday night against the Indianapolis Colts at Invesco Field at Mile High. Also, Shanahan doesn't usually play his starters in the final preseason game, which is Sept. 2 at Arizona.

"We just want him to get better and ready for the regular season," Shanahan said. "I have no worries. He'll be ready."

Bailey has been durable throughout his career. Since entering the NFL in 1999, he has played in all 96 regular-season games, the only cornerback during that time to play every game.

Bailey knows it's realistic that he is likely to sit for the remainder of the preseason.

"I'm always trying to stay optimistic about my playing chances, but who knows? If I'm not ready, I won't go," said Bailey, who said he will play in Denver's regular-season opener. "I try to take it day-by-day because every day I see improvement.

"It's not enough improvement. It's not what I want. So I've got to be patient with this thing."

Anderson's deal extended
Newly acquired safety Mar- ques Anderson was given another year on his contract, which expires after this season. Anderson's agent, Peter Schaffer, said incentives and workout bonuses were part of the extension.

Anderson, whom the Broncos claimed off waivers Tuesday from Oakland, practiced with his new team Wednesday.

The extension is a guarantee of a roster spot and a good start for Anderson in Denver.

"Marques feels comfortable there and would like a little security," Schaffer said. "It made sense."

Anderson has some familiarity with the Broncos. He played for Broncos defensive backs coach Bob Slowik with Green Bay from 2002-03. Shanahan said Anderson

GUARANTEE a roster spot? Why? The Raiders waived him for a reason!

I know we need a safety, and that Jeremy LeSeuer looks a little too much like Tony Lilly for my liking, but GUARANTEE?!

I'm still not all that worried about Champ.

I'm sure the fact that Browner was placed on IR had something to do with his guaranteed spot...

Seems premature, and evidently Slowik likes him. Doesn't bode well for LeSewer and Choad.

I also noticed Nate Jackson also got an extension. I was beginning to think he might be on the bubble since he's been battling a nagging hamstring injury, but this news leads me to believe his job is quite safe.

The cracks are starting to show. Looks like we'll need 7 more DBs next year.

Anderson knows Slowik and Hopefully like Sam Brandon can be excellent at Special teams. I would be very surprised if he ever gets starting time unless Ferguson gets injured. Ferguson and Lynch have a very good understanding of each other and where they are on the field. Plus, Ferguson has above average cover skills.

I don't know about you but I'm getting awfully concerned with Champ and his hammy.

It's a wise move to have him rehabilitate the rest of preseason though, just hope he comes back alright or we are screwed at DB again.

The only problem with Marques Anderson is: With he and MIKE Anderson, now we'll have 2 more guys with their ENTIRE NAME scrawled across their backs - like DJ and Darrent Williams.

How is that for sick? I'm worried about UNIFORMS!

If you want another peak into my sickness, here you go:

I am actually HOPING Terry Pierce gets cut. Why? Well, Jashon is a Buff, that's one reason - but another reason is that I want Keith Burns back in jersey #58!

Give it to me straight, doc . . . how much time do I have left?

Fergy is my favorite player on defense, Period. Dude is 5'10 and maybe 10 lb's heavier in muscle than me. And he lays the wood more than Kennedy EVER did. Kennedy got in more highlight style hits, but Ferguson gets MORE hits. Plus, he has been damn consistent in Coverage unlike Kennoy. Do not forget he was a former CB either.

With Champ out until the start of the season, I'm glad we drafted D. Williams and this kid has looked capable so far.

It'll be good to see how he holds up against starting calibre WRs and if the job he did against Andre Johnson was just a fluke. I know I questioned this pick early on but kid is making me look like a chump now for doing it. A very happy chump I might add!

Still no news about C. Brown, I think his three weeks should be up now. It's almost too quiet.

He is a third year player who can be coached, I only saw him play against AFC West teams but he was a playmaker in both Bronco games & one of the KFC games. He hustled & was always around the ball.

Butt-Pirates can't use a player until he is 32 or older & has been coached by everyone else in the NFL. I can't remember any home grown starts starting for Butt-Pirates (guys with 3-5 years tenure).

I read somewhere this morning he was supposed to be back at practice Monday, let me find that.

http://www.denverpost.com/broncos/ci_2970895

Injury report

Broncos defensive tackle Mario Fatafehi returned to practice from a medial collateral ligament injury.

Defensive end Courtney Brown has been working some on the side, and Shanahan said he's on target to return to practice Monday. Shanahan said Brown will play at Arizona.

Shanahan said rookie running back Maurice Clarett continues to work well on the scout team, and he will get some playing time against the Cardinals.

Defensive end Courtney Brown, out since Aug. 4 with a dislocated elbow, is expected to be back next week and play against the Cardinals.

I hope not. I'm treating C. Brown as a luxury this season. If we have him on the team ready to go then great! If not, well, that's why we have Ekuban/Englegerger/Pryce.

The way I see it, he signed for relatively cheap so any contribution would be gravy, because it would mean we could slot in Pryce into DT for that extra push on obvious passing downs.

That's the appropriate attitude with him, IMO. He has played so little lately that no one really knows how he'd preform over 12 - 16 games.

He could be a friggin beast on that D line. Him and Trevor playing the ends. That could be brutal. I hope he can find a way to stay healthy.
