Manning good preseason test - Denver Post - Mike Klis
08/23/2005 - Defense, boys. Defense. Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts are coming to town Saturday for arguably the most meaningful game on the preseason schedule. Based on past performances when it has mattered most, the Broncos' defense might want to work on its combination six-defensive back, eight-man front packages, given the way Manning has been known to treat the Broncos' defense as if nobody was there. "I know people are going to make this game a big deal," Broncos coach Mike Shanahan said. "But you're not going to get so carried away that you show people what you're going to do during the regular season. It's a fine line. You want to play well and stay injury-free. At the same time, it doesn't mean anything as far as the regular season. In my experience, preseason only means something to people if you lose. It doesn't mean anything if you win." Shanahan then smiled at the irony. Preseason, indeed.

I'm still concerned about Champ's hammy. Those things can linger all season long. We're not talented enough to have him miss any games. People are going to say it's ok and it gives the youngsters time to practice, but it still bothers me.

The Browncos might not be as motivated as the rest of the defense after being spanked by Manning the last two years. Thing is we beat them in INDY the first year in the regular season but we had a pass rush. Trevor was wreaching havoc on MAnning and if I am not mistaken Big Al was barking out defensive changes and alignments as MAnning went through
fake audibles and arm flapping routine. It would be worth a 15 yarder for someone to come across the line early when he is flapping his arms and crap and nail him like in the WATERBOY with adam sandler. The main thing was quick penetration of the d-line in that game and I DO BELIEVE we have that again.

It would be *PRYCELESS* to see Trevor sitting on Manning's head about four times this weekend...... I know it is only preseason so don't show a lot just bring it physically at the line and kick their ass............

with champ and 3 other defensive players OUT, i say its going to happen. pre-season. save it for the season. They'll probably pull manning after one drive anyways.

edit:
just edited the *OUT* part. duh.

hopefully. I havent kept up with the colts in the offseason, but is there OL the same as last year? If so, I think the first drive will be a good test for our DL.

The Colts are going to be putting in a vanilla offense anyway. Manning isn't going to come into a preseason game and start doing audibles and crap in order to confuse the Broncos defense. I doubt E. James plays more than one or two series.

The Colts have not yet won a preseason game and I doubt the care about this game. What they'll want to see is the first offense clicking, moving the ball down the field. Once Manning comes out, I bet the first string oline plays a little longer, then they will rotate out.

What I'm betting the Colts are concerned about is seeing how their first string defense does against the Broncos first string offense.

They pull Peyton after the first sack. If Champ ain't ready, sit his azz. They'll need him in the regular season not this week or next.

i dont care if its only pre-season this is kind of turning into a mini-rivalry i know both teams dont like eachother and twice the broncos have beat them in regualr season to get into the playoffs only to get embarresd. I think the emotion is gonna be high even though its only a pre-season game. Shanny was right though if we lose then the media will pick us apart if we win the media will say its a preseason game so it doesnt matter.

Colts interior line is beyond pathetic. Warren and Meyers should be able to collapse the pocket and get into Manning's face, maybe scare dungy enough to pull him after three plays. We will see.

Counldnt agree more. Even though it's preseason I think I'll punch a hole in the wall if roc lines up as a starter and gets burnt agan

Also, it's be worth about 75000 (taxdeductable) dollars to me to see lynch come blindside and give gayton a helmet to helmet.

*Keeps repeating to self*

Totally unnecessary. To recreate last years ass kicking all we need to do is start our 3rd string D-line.

Secondary chances
Broncos’ defense, young and old, await Manning, Colts’ test

By Patrick Ridgell
The Daily Reporter-Herald

ENGLEWOOD — If this was the regular season, panic might engulf Dove Valley. Since it’s August and the Denver Broncos want to see who’s going to stick in their defensive secondary, Saturday’s opportunity to face the best is a gift.
Indianapolis comes to town Saturday night (6 p.m., Invesco Field, CBS Ch. 4), and with the Colts comes the NFL’s best offense in 2004. Peyton Manning’s record 49 touchdown passes, plus his 4,557 yards through the air, preceded the Colts 49-24 wild-card playoff victory over Denver in January. That day, Manning threw for four touchdowns and 458 yards, the second-most ever in a playoff game.

You could argue those results were an aberration. During the regular season, the Broncos finished sixth in the NFL, allowing 184.2 passing yards per game.

They were sixth in completion percentage, holding opponents to a clip of 56.2 percent.

But the Colts exposed something in the Broncos pass defense. And even though Manning’s exaggerated success in 2004 came against many opponents, its affect on Denver became obvious when the Broncos revamped their secondary. They traded cornerback Willie Middlebrooks and let safety Kenoy Kennedy and Kelly Herndon depart via free agency. And they took cornerbacks with their first three picks in April’s draft.

The Colts’ starters are expected to play the better part of three quarters Saturday. Never before have Denver’s top draftees — Darrent Williams, Karl Paymah and Domonique Foxworth — faced such a test.

“As young guys, it’s really not a preseason game for us because the coaches all want to know what we can do,” Foxworth said. “It’s another opportunity for us to show ourselves, and it doesn’t get any better. This is a good measuring stick, there’s no more prolific offense in the NFL than the Colts. It’s a good chance to measure up against the best.

“I wouldn’t call it nervous. I think I’m definitely excited. Those are guys I’ve watched and have a tremendous amount of respect for. It’s more excitement than anything.”

Win or lose, this game is a perfect opportunity to get our defense primed for the season. It's actually better if we get burned. Losing makes you re-evaluate your game and try to get better. It exposes your weaknesses so they can be addressed. Do I hope we lose? no. But if we have to, the preseason is the place to do it.

No matter what happens, you can be sure that more will be made of it than is warranted.
