Default New NFLDraftCountdown Mock (8-16-2005)

Tried to post this all morning yesterday... oh well.

http://www.nfldraftcountdown.com/sub/mockdraft.html

Same as before, for us at least:

9. DENVER BRONCOS (f/WAS)
MATHIAS KIWANUKA
DE | Boston College | Scouting Report
If this pick ends up being in the top ten overall this trade will look much worse for the Redskins and they will have even more pie on their faces than they already do, but I guess that would be about par for the course these days. The Broncos might have the luxury of taking the best player available here, but the defensive line could end up being a major need if Courtney Brown and Trevor Pryce can't stay healthy like has been the case the past few years. A tall, rangy athlete and sack artist, "Kiwi" returned to school for his final season and should easily be the top senior end available on Draft Day. Denver may also look at one of the top offensive tackles since Matt Lepsis might not be with them much longer, but Kiwanuka is probably too good of a value to pass up, especially considering the uncertainty they have at the position.

24. DENVER BRONCOS
DAVIN JOSEPH
OG-OT | Oklahoma | Scouting Report
For a long time now the Broncos have consistently had one of the better offensive lines in football but the time has come for the addition of some young blood, especially since Matt Lepsis and Tom Nalen might not be around much longer. Joseph played guard last year for the Sooners on what had to be the best o-line in the country, but due to graduation losses he will move outside to tackle as a senior. If he comes through with the type of final campaign that he is capable of he should be right in the mix to be the first guard chosen on Draft Day '06. The team also took a chance on some high risk / high reward players along the defensive line so if all or some of them don't pan out that will be an area that will have to be addressed as well. Don't rule out a receiver either though, with Rod Smith nearing the end of his career and the failure of Ashley Lelie to develop into the premier #1 option some had envision he would a few years ago.

It's a long time till April, but based on what we know now, if the Broncs pick for need, I would think they would use one of those picks on a WR. I do like the DL pick, but I would prefer Williams if they have a shot at him. I am sure the Broncs DL will be Ok this year just based on the number of bodies they have to choose from, but it scares me that they do not have any young talent there. OG is certainly a need, but I would think they fill that with a FA vet.

I want SIZE and TALENT on the both the D-LINE and O-LINE.

Unless, of course, Leinart really shows something this year, and we are somewhat in a position to get him. But I'm not going there, until I see how he performs THIS YEAR.

I absolutely agree with you that it's going to be a need - but Derek Hagan and Santonio Holmes, in any other year (the last few, granted, have been stacked at WR) would be 2nd round picks. I would vote no to a WR in the first, it's just not a good pick value-wise. I'd much rather take a flyer on someone late.

I think if Mario Williams is there, we take him regardless of how our DL performs this year. He's someone you just can't pass up. Also, if either Winston or D'Brick are available, I think the same applies. Otherwise, your guess is as good as mine who we choose.

I agree with your take about 2006 being a weak WR group. I think the sophomore group of Calvin Johnson, Dwayne Jarrett, Lance Leggett and Robert Meachem will be the next great class of WRs. I would also be willing to bet that true freshman Derrick Williams of Penn State has a top ten selection in his future.

Don't forget Ted Ginn in that sophomore class. He probably won't have near as much polish as the four you listed, but I would just about take him over any of those guys. Also, don't forget that Greg Olsen might come out that year. He is going to be a stud TE.

I agree about Derrick Williams though, he to me is going to be a bit of a wildcard like Ginn, but in a good way, same as Ginn, in that he has a chance to be a stud WR or CB.

Omar Jacobs if he comes out. 41 to 4 TD/INT ratio. Huge upside to push Jake in a couple of years.

If not, D'brickashaw or Davin Joseph would be great. We need higher quality interior OL. Hamilton is great, the others are marginal as Nalen gets older.

I feel guilty for snubbing Ted Ginn Jr. I think its easy to forget about him because he's more of a college football ATH or all-purpose player than a true WR. I agree wholeheartedly with you, Ginn is as much of a player as Reggie Bush and he's getting top ten pick hype without being a true everydown running back.
