Default New formations

New defensive formation gives Pryce options

End likes revised 3-4 scheme team development

By FRANK SCHWAB THE GAZETTE

Defensive end Trevor Pryce might have an extra position this season.
This week in joint practices against the Houston Texans the Broncos have used a defensive formation in passing situations with Pryce standing up instead of in his usual three-point stance. From that position he can rush the passer or drop into coverage.

“I like it a lot,” Pryce said. “I’ve played defensive tackle, defensive end, now add outside linebacker. Before you know, I’ll be playing safety.” In the offseason the Broncos talked about using a 3-4 formation — three linemen and four linebackers.

The Broncos have practiced in a formation similar to a 3-4, but with five defensive backs. When the Broncos use that formation, three linemen will be down, two linebackers will be on the field and one end will stand up.
The Broncos often dropped a lineman into coverage with a zone blitz last season, so the new look won’t be a drastic change. But Pryce said he’s excited about it.

“I think it will be an effective look,” Pryce said. “It gives the offense something to practice for. There will be times they won’t be able to figure out if I’m rushing or dropping.”

End Anton Palepoi also has practiced at the hybrid position.
“It gives me a little bit of freedom to move around,” Palepoi said. “It’s sweet. I enjoy it and it’s working well for us.”

This is interesting. I wonder who the Two LB's were. TP as a Rush end as well, Pryceless.

That's nice, but I'd rather see Trevor chasing the qb than chasing Gonzales or Gates.

Are we running this when we start getting turnovers during camp or do they come during the base D as well?

This is a great way to tap into Trevors experience and put him into a position to really get after it. If he's hiding a back problem it will be smoked out before the end of the season. If Trevor has too many tells they will use a lot of audibles.

I think he can compete with Gonzo and Gates but the magic formula remains turnovers. If this doesn't force the QB to make some hard choices it isn't worth it.

I think the Broncos are showing confidence in their DL to make up the difference. You can't call this kind of play where Trevor could be pulled without somebody underneath to take out the trash. If the DL plays like last year this is on the seriously stupid side of things. This could work well or bust.

A lot of our players are dinged up. If key guys are missing then it's back to ugly ball.

This is just one of those defenses they use to screw up QBs like Peyton manning the only reason we beat the colts in 2k3 is because we confused the hell out of Peyton Manning. I can see this being a play we audiable to on third down late in a game and force the other team to use a precious timeout.

This is idiotic. If they want someone to drop off the line and into coverage, it should be the the Predator. Pryce is a mauler, he doesn't have close to LB speed, he's not even a quick lineman IMO. The only thing would be if they see a "hot read" coming while we show blitz, he can go into the passing lane where the short slant is likely to be thrown. We could bring Gold on the outside and Pryce would only have to move a few yards inside to that passing lane. He might get one stuck in his facemask.

Remember all of the defensive set NE uses to confuse the offense. Broncs are copying that trend.

Preditor, as much as we all like him, is on the bubble in terms of making the roster. He can rush the passer and play ST, but he has not proved he can fill in if one of the first line LBs go down. He is competing with Sykes, Burns and Pierce for probably two or three spots.

Well, it's confusing to me that they would put Pierce at will and Predator a Sam. I think they will stash Burns as an assistant and then sign him if need be later in the year. I think Sykes might be odd man out. He's been invisible since he hurt his knee.

Wrong oh butt wheat... last year before he went down with the back problem he was actively covering our TE's and even talking shiat. Asked about his joking with the TE's Pryce responded... I'm faster than any of them I can talk all I want!

I've seen a couple of articles lately that with the no touchy the wideout rules the hardest offensive position to contain is the Tight End. One of the articles went so far as to suggest that is why Gates and Gonzo had such good seasons in '04 because they exploited it.

If coaches feel it is a defensive weakness then they will be coming up with things to try and prevent it.

I don't really want Trevor chasing Gonzo. I'd prefer see Pryce dump him on his ass before he's much off the LOS...

there were a lot of teams (like the Chiefs) who let Gates go free at LOS...if they can't slow the TE up within 5 yards then they shouldn't be covering the TE at all.

I don't think they are gonna look to man Trevor up against a tight end we can't be that stupid. But he will probably just drop into a short zone coverage like a zone blitz just to confuse the offensive line and the quarterback. If you remember Denver always has a hard time with 3-4 defenses because they dont know who is coming so if we can mix it up I think its not a bad idea, but if were gonna come we better get there and not give the qb time

I think this a totally different defense... I don't see us audibling into it from another defense- based on the personel we'd have on the field... since it requires 5 DBs... it'll be interesting to see if they break it out tonight at all.

This is going to be fun to evaluate tonight. I could see TP knock Gonzo on his ass underneath like Vrabel and Bruschi did in goaline situations last year.

The number of quality DL should only bolster the goalline run Defense that was just average as well.

allow me to correct myself.. you surely could audible into this defense... if you were in 4-3 Nickel...

I'm not afraid to admit when I'm wrong... just the last time that it happened Reagan was still in office.
