Default For the Archives: Khan's Lost 8/8 Report

just wanted to get this over here for future reference since it was lost in the shuffle.

Hey guys. After a small break I was able to attend afternoon camp today and hope to make the last one tomorrow before out boys head south to beat up the Texans. anyway, lets get started.

They did a lot of 11 on 11 drills and eventually move-the-ball scrimmages down the field. The Following starters were off the field: Alexander, Bailey, Pryce, Lynch, Gold, Smith. Also missing: Q, Fatafehi, Brown

They mostly ran the same set of plays consisting of two running two passing and two rollouts. I'm sure there might be more but generally it seemd the receivers ran the same routs and the blocking scheme was the same.

The offense started out rusty, got going a little bit, and then was totally shut down by the overwhelming defense.

Running backs:

Mike Anderson: Still looke dthe best all around, but Tatum is catching up. He still has a few moves left in him, picks up the blitzes the best and is the best at grinding it out. He's obviously not as quick to the outside, nor does he have break-away speed, but his ability to grind out consistant yards and set up the rest of the offense is huge. He still has the best hands with Dayne a close second.

Tatum Bell: He had some struggles but made some good plays. First play I saw when I got there was a toss play left and he dropped it. He got chewed out, but then he improved and by the end he got a pass when he was put in motion out wide right. After the catch he made some nice moves to get away from defenders, and his speed was huge. If he can improve his catching, he'll be tough to match up with.

Ron Dayne: He's a very complete back for our system. He consistantly penetrated and mad ethe right holes. And more than a few occations he had some nice catches. I didn't get a good few on how his blocking is, but prior practices have shown it to be fine.

Cecill Sapp - He had one nice catch for a big gain. It really surprised me. didn't get too many other reps though.

Kyle Johnson: He's made some big catches. He has the mobility of a receiving Tight End, so using him in the pass game is advantageous. He had a couple nice catches and broke one down field for a decent gain. Didn't see his blocking from where I was but would assume its good concidering he's still on the first team.

Brandon Miree: So-so. Had a couple drops and didn't run well.

Next: the Pass game

The story of the pass game is the guys fighting for that fifth receiver spot, and honestly I think it will come down to who can play well when the lights are on. I got a great look at a bunch of the "bubble" receivers. here is my top set to make the cut:

Oops - Rice didn't practice either. Forgot about that. Ok, moving on.

Todd Devoe: He has one great catch every practice and maintains relatively consistant play otherwise. This time he was down for a deep pass form BVP. It was perfectly thrown and he just beat his man and made the catch. He's got big play potential so he's someone who could make the team.

Charlie Adams: He's made some very consistant catches, and he runs well. He's gets pretty good sepperation. He runs lots of different routes, and they use him a lot of different ways. His versatillity and stability stand out for him.

Romar Crenshaw: He makes a few big catches every camp as well. While they aren't as big as Devoe's, they are nice and he seems to step it up. I like ho he's played all of camp. Just knowing one of these three will be gone makes me cringe, but I assume they are playing for their jobs, so that's why they look good right now.

Triandos Luke: He is returning kicks and looks better than last year at it. (thye ran some drills again today.) He makes some ok catches, but it is his special teams play that has me listing him here with the other top 3.

Others -

BJ Johnson: He's mediocre. Today Matt Mauk threw a great pass down field that Adams caught for a TD. He threw almost the same throw on the same route the very next play, except that it was with BJ and the safeties were cheating over. They would have had a pick except that BJ shoved one into the other. The problem is that it was offense PI, but I guess that's better than a pick.

Anyway, that fight for that spot is going to be tough to watch.

The safeties had the biggest day, and it was credit to the D-line and some nice tipped passes. The biggest difference between this year and last year's practice is the tipped balls. That's so huge for creating Turn overs. Lets talk about the Turnovers -

Brandon Browner had a big day. He looks great. they have him play FS but he can man up and play corner. Going down the field he can use his size to isolate a reciever and strangle the route. Plummer threw one play to Leach, any way it was a slant and he gunned it to low. Browner came acros the middle and just leaped in the air and took it. It was pretty good. I want you all to know they ran the same play latter and Plummer made the same throw with more touch underneath and completed the pass.

Sam Brandon - He is something a ball hawk; at least when I watch him. He had a couple of picks today. One of them came off of a tipped ball. Plummer nailed Watts in the zone seam, it was a little high, but directly over his head and there was a fierce rush coming. It glanced off his hands and into the safeties' clutches. An older guy I was sitting next to said "Well that's like watching the real game." It was sad but true. Last year all over again.

Predator had some real nice plays. He would close to make a tackle and jsut seemed to play heads up. He'll make the team. There was one play where he was covering Nate Jackson down the stretch, and just hung with him. Kannell threw it, even though Chris young had cheated over. Nate made an uncharacteristic drop, which bounced the ball into and out of Chris Young's hands, and Chuckwurah lunged, grabbed it and ran it back. I was impressed with him, especially his ability to stay with Nate Jackson. That was Jackson's first drop I've seen.

Kannell Continues to suck. Two picks and mostly incompletions. Jake looked good. Bradlee Van Pelt looked really good especially thwoing the deep ball. Charlie Adams was manned up on Lenny Walls and Kannell threw one deep . Walls cut his route off and Charlie couldn't catch up to it, but the ball landed right in the left side of the endzone square in the middle. Bradlee was more effecient with his team than Jake was during move-the-ball drills, but then he was playing the second team defense, and even he got shut down when Chris myers snapped the ball over his head and they couldn't convert on third and long. Mauk had some nice plays too. He had two throws downfield for big catches.

Next - Tight Ends

I couldn't see how the tight ends blocked so I won't comment on that. However I will talk about the pass game.

Jeb was ok but he didn't have the ball thrown to him a lot. When they did, he caught it so take that for what it's worth.

Nate Jackson - He made some relaly big plays. One throw that shouldn't have been made had him against both safeties and a corner. I "knew" it was a pick but he just used his height to leap up and steal it. It was like a fourty or fifty yard pass. Everyone went crazy about it. I already mentioned that one drop he had. He gets great sepperation obviously because of his speed and has soft hands.

Mike Leach: Didn't get many snaps but when they throw the ball to him he catches it. He had one handed catch today that I was just amazed with. A pass catching tight end that can long snap. That's a bargain and I expect he'll make the team.

Hape: He was ok. Had some catches. He made two while getting nailed and I think that his abiltiy to catch in traffic is why we used him in the redzone. That is only two plays I saw, but he held on so that's what I think.

The rush was really impressive again. It was the main reason that the drives stalled. All three move the ball drills ended with the D being the victor. The first and third team did so with a turnover, and the second team did it with a sack. The linebackers and D-line are just really good at getting their hands in the air and defelcting passes and that has me pumped.

That deep pass to Nate Jackson was thrown by Chad Friehauf. I forgot to mention him. He's a totall project but he has all the physical tools: Smart, tall, great arm, willing to contribute. He was helping with kick return coverage today. That's hilarious. Bradlee was too, but he comes from linebacker pedigree and has the size and athleticism to do it. Watching Chad try to get off a block is "adorable".

The kick returners were Darrent Williams, Roc, and Luke. You will all be upset to hear the Mike Anderson was out there being the returners lead blocker again. I amost yelled something. They took him out after a couple of go's, but he was the best one at it. Other teams use their starters on the Special Teams, and I guess having your best athletes play all around is certainly a good way to quality and your money's worth.

Darrent looked the best at returning. His speed and quickness is killer. I remember that last time I saw him he was running into the ball to try and catch on the move for extra speed. It looked dangerous and resulted in a drop. Well this time he was real good about setting and securing before he took off. Roc and Luke looked ok, but you can tell that Darrent is just better at it.

Ok that's it.

We saw the subspace message earlier, but due to the server change and some interference, the message was unintelligible. We we will send you new subspace codes Khan. Want some Iowa steaks or have you learned creative ways to creole those shrimplike worms? I can have them freezefrozen and have them there in, say, 58 years at light speed.

Adams looked like he was running pretty good routes vs the Texans. He is a wild card to make the team.

You know I like Foxworth personally just because of his size and style of play, but Williams has the spot so that tells me he's beat Dominique fair and square. I only watched the morning practices and most of Darrent's picks were in the afternoon. That they are both playing at a high level has me satisfied. Paymah was struggling last I saw, but apparently Mediator has some sort of remedy he's playing to snap him into gear.
