Jeepers:
Duct tape? Velcro? Man. good they patch it up but damn. I think they will make it back down, but jeepers. They have to get a new orbiter. The ceramic tile design has to go! Need some sort of one piece design of carbon fiber with a ceramic coat or something. This is getting rediculous. I'm no engineer, but I know that design is out of the 70's. Lets get something new. Not patching, cutting loose 2-3 centimeters of filler material. Why they didn't find this at the pad confuses me, I didn't think the tiles would shift enough to cause the material to be forced out. I think NASA wants to double check some other procedures. I don't like them sending a guy out on a stick using an "Improvised" hack saw to cut 2-3 centimeters of material away. What's to say he doesn't knock off a few tiles & they can't get them back on... http://www.space.com/missionlaunches...gapfiller.html The Discovery astronaut tapped to pluck out two strips of filler material jutting from the orbiter’s heat shield said Tuesday that the first-time repair appears simple, but that great care must be taken to avoid damaging the shuttle. |
