Hello Bronco fans! Kaylore here with Ceti Alpha fives finest reporting. Let's get right off so I can give you all the run down.
I decided to try and spend more time looking at the offensive and defensive line drills since that's what I missed last time. Only got to see a few of the O-line players so I'll start there. As a whole: This was a better day for the O-line rather than trytin gto beat the defense outright, they seemed to do a better job of letting the rush give to one side so it would open passing lanes up for the QB's. The tackles still fold too quickly and it might be a problem. The run game looked a lot better and the holes were bigger this time. Nalen: Still looks good. Audibles right. Doesn't get as much push as he used to. Lepsis: Looks ok but he gets pushed a little more than I'd like at teams. He's still the best one there. Hamilton and Foster were the same. Hamilton is pretty good at angling and getting some push. Tyson Clabo: Goodness this kid is amazing. He esily got the most penetration and threw the D-line around like little girls. He never gave, and was real good about pushing his man out to the perimeter and keeping the pocket big. He's a little vulnerable to swim moves, but that's more technique. Chris Myers: First let me preface this by saying that I got to stand next Chris Myers' family friends, Randy and Susan, who came to see him play. They told me about how his Dad came to all his practices at Miami and what a great kid he is. Apparently he has three degrees and is very smart. Likes to read the lines and make calls and that's why he wants to play center. Sounds like a good match to me, as well. I didn't get to see him play too much and a lot of what I saw was good but nothing to get excited about. He did do better than some of the vets, so for a rookie, that's exciting. Dwayne Carswell: He was playing guard mostly even though he's listed at tackle. He was the most agile out of the bunch and his blocking was ok, but he's below average at working with the tackle and center on making certain blocks. No doubt it was because he's not used to playing inside. That's what camps is for. Ok Now the D line. |

The D-line was dominat as ever. The O-line stepped it up today used their aggression against them, but they still made plays. Jake got away from two sacks by running down the field. That was coverage and preassure combined.
He still hasn't really thrown a bad pass. Here's the starters on the D-line: Pryce, Warren, Myers, Coleman. Pryce: Great penetration, doesn't bite on play-action a lot. If there was someone free it was usually him. That anyone is concerned about his back at all is a total joke. He looks great. Coleman: He really pushes and colapses the pocket. He's got some great skills at the line and uses those very effectively. I don't know how strong he is, but it seemed he understands leverage really well and that's what helps that side so much. Warren: He looks great. His burst is good and often he takes two blockers and that unlocks Pryce many times. They have a lot of trouble moving him and Myers. Myers: Myers really impressed me. He had good footwork and was very effective at getting unerneath his man. He and Warren, not surprisingly work well together. They are a little weaker agains the run, but DJ, Al and Ian are a pretty nice fallback for anything that comes in. The rest of the D-line was ok, but I got to see the starters play mostly. So since I missed the second and third squads' plays, this will have to do until tomorrow. Now the running backs. |

The running backs. It's like good and not good at all for the backs. As soon as a guy messed up, they didn't play him much. I guess that's Shanahan's style. Ok here we go.
Mike Anderson: A little faster than I expected. He can juke too. He's the best at doing the "bronco way" meaning taking his hole and blowing through it. The Line was better about creating cutback lanes this time, so all the backs did much better. He forces thorugh holes and you can see that linebackers will need to square up against him if they want stop him. He picks up blitzes the best of the backs. Tatum Bell: He's really improved in the pass game I'm sure you're all happy to hear, and I'm sure you are all happier to hear that is the best at protecting the ball. His hands are better and his form is good. His blocking and blitz protection is average. I think his technique might need some work, but I couldn't see from where I was standing. Ron Dayne: Ron Dayne looked, are you ready? - good. He is much lighter on his feet and actually beat some guys to the outside. Another way he surprised me was in the pass game. He was pretty good at finding a soft spot under or in the seam of a zone and he cought the ball very well. Real surprise for me.Maurice Clarrett: Ug. This kid isn't doing well. His balance is poor. He was pushed over twice. He still dances behind the line. He had a few decent runs, but his bad ones were terrible. He needs a lot of work and is definitely a project. Cecil Sapp. I saw him catch one ball out of the backfield that looked good. That was the only paly I saw him even in at all. Next is linebackers. |

Oh man where to begin. They all look good.
Ian Gold: He's "ok". Nothing spectacular there. He stuck to his guy and seemed to move around well, but I wan't enthralled with him. Al Wilson: He was so psyched up. He really lead that defense. He'd call plays, yell coverages and was one of the most excited when something went right, also seemed audibly upset when something went wrong. DJ Willams: Your boy is a machine, SoCal. He was all over the field. His coverage is the best of the linebackers his reactions in the zone are the best as well. You can tell when the pads come on, he's going to throttle guys. nothing worked on him (in terms of plays and fakes). None of the Tight ends he covered made a play. The two non-starters that really impressed me were Keith Burns and Jayson Sykes. They really played well and closed on the plays effectively. Pierce was ok, but had me worried for as long as he's been in the system I guess I expected more from him. Next is the pass game: Corners and receivers. Here's some interesting thoughts. Larry Coyer, Mike Shanahan, and Kubiak personally ran a redzone receiving drill. Coyer coached the defensive backs, Shanahan the receivers, and Kubes the Quarterbacks.
They manned up on each other and worked on jamming, breaking a jam, and corner endzone catches. That should tell you how worried they are about the redzone. Rod Smith: He seemed to have an off day. He dropped a few and had trouble getting open. He did make some good plays, but it was average for him. Ashley Lelie: He did better today than yesterday. A couple of really good deep plays and some figer grabs across the middle. He doesn't have the quickness of watts, but in spite of Lenny Walls' excellent coverage he got some decent sepperation and was very good at using himself to block the defender form the ball. Darius Watts: I was talking to Andrew Mason and we were lamenting how he looks so amazing in practices and suffered during the season. Hopefully its rookie flutters. The kid gets the most sepperation from any of his defenders and I can't stress enough he body control and agility. Looked great again. Nate Jackson: This kids catches everthing his hands are good and he seems to have a good sense for the ball. He's really good at beating his guys and getting himself into possition to make a play. Jeb Putzier. It was harder for Jeb because DJ was on him most of the time swatted anything he would have cought away. He still had some nice catches and he does block better than last year -for camp anyway. Champ Bailey: Champ came to play today - Interception for a return. He was money all practice. I thought yesterday he was average and he really was locked into his guy well. They threw to his guy a few times, and were rewarded with a returned pick and deflections. Lenny Walls: He's beent he most impressive of the D-backs (well actually let me get to Lynch.) His has this first, left foot step that is sooooo fast. So quick and it's hard to fake him out. Great at breaking up passes but he doesn't possition himself to make the pick as well. Speaking of possitioning himself to make a pick... Darrent Williams: I got to see him do some kick off duties in addition to his corner game. Yesterday as you'll recall I said he looked crappy (The broncos TV reaturing good plays on the offense frequently show him trailing after them). Today he was much better. I think he was trying to show off yesterday for the fans. What stood out to me is his ball instincts. It's almost like he can hear it coming. He looks and tries to pick/defend it at the very second its there. Until then he's locked onto his guy. what this does is forces the receiver to suddenly have to play defense on Darrent. His small size and quickness actually make it easier for him to get into a good possition for it. In the return game, he was the best at following his blocks and reading where his holes were. He juked a couple defenders out. He's natural back there, and I can't wait to seem him on punts. Dmonique Foxworth: Still the best rookie. He made a couple of rookie mistakes today in coverage, but he's amazing manned up and possitions his body well for deflections catch interruptions. Karly Paymah: He is good in the zone but his man coverage is very average and raw. Hope he gets better. *** Jerry Rice, and Luther Ellis weren't suited up today, though they were on the field watching. Quarterbacks |

Whoops. Safeties first!
John Lynch: He's actually better and more comfortable with his neck now. I think, and I must be drunk, that he might actually be faster. Through motion he got manned up on Lelie for a deep play and was with him every step to finally defelct it in the endzone. In cover 2 he's been right there everytime to lay the receiver out. Very impressive. Nick Ferguson: No mistakes but no real plays either. He did get burned pretty bad matched up against Nate Jackson at one point. He closses on the running back well. LeSeur: I think he's going to be the third safety. He looked almost as good as Ferguson (in a good way). Made good decissions and clossed on the ball well. He didn't take a lot of snaps but was very good from what I saw. Chris Young: Ok. Still only bakup material. He played a few snaps and deflected a pass to Wesley Duke, which isn't that amazing. Ok NOW Quarterbacks. |

The Quarterbacks as a whole played better today. They found the open guy and were able to make some decent plays.
Jake Plummer: Had some decent throws. Made a few deep balls but missed a few too. He never threw into coverage. Always threw to an open guy. Made a coulple nice deep balls to Lelie, Smith and Watts. Danny kannell: Good grief. did you know most of the ints from yesterday were from Danny Kannell. He didn't throw as many today, but there is still another practice to go. Bad choices, bad throws, and his hair sucks. BVP. Looked ok not as sharp as yesterday, but still one of the better ones, I'm ashamed to still have to say. Mauk: He looked a lot better today. Threw a few balls very nicely into some zone coverages. Jeb is really good at finding seams in the zones. Friehauf: Bless his heart. He is still quite innacurate. He had a little more touch today, but his footwork isn't great. He just needs a lot of work and assume so until I say otherwise. Overall it was a good practice. The D didn't totally own the offense today, which is good. Seems some adjustments were made. I want to watch the O-line more and see if I can get into more specifics about mroe players- especially Chris Myers. Ok, that's it guys. I'll try and stop there again tomorrow. ![]() |
