Union leader Goodenow resigns after ending lockout
July 28, 2005
TORONTO (Reuters) - Bob Goodenow quit as executive director of the National Hockey League Players' Association (NHLPA) Thursday, a week after a salary agreement ended a season-long lockout.
"I am fortunate to have had the opportunity to serve the players over the past 15 years and to have had the support of a tremendous staff at the NHLPA," said Goodenow.
Ted Saskin, formerly the NHLPA's senior director, will replace Goodenow who led the union's negotiations during the season-long standoff this year between players and owners over a wage row.
Last week, NHL players voted to ratify a new collective bargaining agreement with the league that limits total player salaries to 54 percent of league revenue, essentially a salary cap that many players had been opposed to.
Support for the new agreement ended a lockout that wiped out the season starting in February. The NHL became the first North American professional sports league to lose a season because of a labor dispute.
