Americans are growing tired of hearing one lie after another: Poll indicates drop in Bush's personal credibility
http://today.reuters.com/News/newsAr...SH-POLL-DC.XML WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush's personal credibility appears to be eroding at a time when Iraq has become the top public priority and the White House is engulfed in controversy over senior Bush adviser Karl Rove, a poll released on Wednesday suggested. The NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll showed the percentage of Americans who believe Bush is "honest and straightforward" fell to 41 percent from 50 percent in January, while those who say they doubt his veracity climbed to 45 percent from 36 percent. The telephone survey, which was conducted July 8-11 and included responses from 1,009 adults, also showed that Iraq has replaced jobs as the leading issue among Americans. With a 3.1 percent margin of error, polling data said 40 percent see Iraq as the top priority for the United States, against 34 percent who view jobs as their main concern. In January, jobs ranked highest among 46 percent to 39 percent for Iraq. The new poll also showed Bush's overall job approval rating slipping to 46 percent from 47 percent in May, while his disapproval rating crept upward to 49 percent from 47 percent. |

Wanted: Adult in the White House
http://www.sptimes.com/2005/07/17/Co..._in_the_.shtml I'm not a big worrier by temperament. The recent terror attacks in London would not put me off public transit. I had no qualms about boarding an airplane after 9/11. In my various jobs, I've received personal death threats that I've shrugged off. But now I'm worried. I'm worried about our staggering deficit (which the White House is celebrating because it looks like this year we'll come up only $333-billion short - whoopee), a record-breaking trade imbalance and an economy that runs on cheap oil as the world's production is about to peak. But mostly I'm worried because our leaders are not. Every day that President Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney and Congress whistle Dixie while fiscal disaster looms only advances the day of reckoning and demonstrates they are not fit to lead. The idea of pay-as-you-go budgeting was utilized while Bill Clinton was president as a responsible way to bring spending in line with revenue. It was abandoned by Bush, because that would require adult choices. |
