1966 National Title: Notre Dame or Alabama?
I wanted to get this started up, about one of the biggest debated National Championship results ever.
In 1966, Notre Dame was awarded the national title after a 10-0-1 season. The biggest problem with that was that the 2 time defending national champs(1964,1965), the Alabama Crimson Tide, went 11-0 that season.
This was back when Notre Dame did not play bowl games, so they sat on a 10-10 game against Michigan State knowing that if they beat USC next week that they'd be awarded the title. So they took the tie and beat USC 51-0 the following week, meanwhile Alabama capped off their season as well unbeaten as they beat Nebraska 34-7 in theSugar Bowl.
So why was the 2 time defending champs shafted by the voters?
Many will point to segregation, even Bear Bryant's own admission that it would be his fault if Alabama didn't garner votes of the east. Alabama was under a lot of pressure about the racism and segregation, and many were intolerant to the state's stance on the subject, and opted to screw their football team as a way of making a point.
Also people believe that because it was Notre Dame, that the name garnered a lot of biased votes for them.
Or could it be that a 3rd straight title was unprecedented and therefore Alabama had a bias against them due to their success?
So let the debate begin, who should have won the title last year, and the reasons why that team should've?
