Default Scouts Inc D-Line

2005 Scouting Report - Football Scouts Inc.
Name: Trevor Pryce
Grade: 73 | Key
Alert: I

Comment:
He is a tall DL with a solid frame. He is a very good run down DE. He shows excellent hand placement vs. the run. He is explosive off the ball and gets into blockers quickly. He does a solid job of shedding blocks and shows acceleration to close down on the ball carrier. He uses his hands well to protect his lower legs vs. cut blocks. He plays with excellent body control -rare to see him off his feet. He can get on the edges and knows how to finish. He shows a burst to close on the ball. He has excellent arm length and uses that to his advantage as a rusher - solid club move to get separation. He makes a lot of plays in their system.

Name: Courtney Brown
Grade: 72 | Key
Alert: DI

Comment:
He possesses excellent strength for the position. He comes off the ball low and hard. He plays with excellent leverage. He has a strong upper body and can shed blocks inside. He will split OT/TE double teams and play on the other side of the LOS. He shows excellent closing speed to get down and make plays from the weak side. As a pass rusher he has been average. He is not a quick twitch DE as a rusher. He does not have the speed to consistently turn the corner. He shows excellent power rush moves though. He has an excellent club move. He comes off the ball low and hard on his rush and can consistently get under the pads of the OT. He shows excellent bull rush power and can walk the OT back into the QB.

Name: Ebenezer Ekuban
Grade: 70 | Key
Alert: DI

Comment:
Has good starting experience over his career. Makes solid initial contact off the snap. Works down the line effectively in the run game - can close to the ball. Shows solid awareness vs. cut blocks. Solid awareness vs. off tackle runs - good feel for reading blocking schemes in the run game. He has an excellent motor - effective player in pursuit Can engage and lock his arms out. Plays stiff-legged - not very smooth when changing directions. He is not very flexible. Loses balance on contact. Lacks real edge speed and ability to cut the edge. Needs more hand use and pass rush moves. He struggles playing double team blocks in the run game. He wears down as a starter. He will wear down in the run game.

Name: Gerard Warren
Grade: 69 | Key
Alert: CU

Comment:
He is a low motor player - gives effort when he feels like it. He is not well conditioned - have to monitor him in the off-season and he will get gassed quickly during the games. Though he has some issues, he possesses an excellent combination of size, strength and AA. He shows very good quickness for his size. When he lets it loose, he can close down the line to the ball in a hurry. He does not show consistent initial quickness. When he gets off the ball he can penetrate and be disruptive. He has the size and strength to 2-gap. He can hold the POA but he lacks the desire to consistently shed blocks and get to the ball. For as talented a player he is, the guy just does not make very many plays.

Name: Mario Fatafehi
Grade: 67 | Key
Alert: None

Comment:
He is an average overall athlete for the position. Relies more on his strength than speed and quickness inside. He is a short DT with a solid build. He has very good strength in both his upper and lower body. He is a much better run down player than pass rusher. He shows a solid anchor playing inside. He plays with good leverage and can take on double team blocks. Shows strength to hold the POA. Active with his hands to work to escape but he is not consistent to get off blocks. When he does get off blocks he does not show a lot of closing quickness to close on the ball carrier. He has a solid motor and will chase the ball but lacks top speed for a DT and is more of a short area player. He shows solid instincts to find the ball but he is not an explosive play-maker.

Name: Michael Myers
Grade: 66 | Key
Alert: None

Comment:
He does not have any real special traits, but he is will give you excellent effort when he is in the game. His AA and play strength are average. He is not much of a play-maker, but will play his correct gap and try to keep things bottled up in the run game. He plays with good leverage and can hold the POA though he is not a guy who is going to shed a lot of blocks and make plays. As a pass rusher he relies on his effort and motor to get pressures. He does not show the initial quickness or edge quickness you like to see from an interior player. Overall, he is a player that can play multiple positions but he is not going to get you real fired up.

Name: Marco Coleman
Grade: 65 | Key
Alert: A

Comment:
Coleman plays with good discipline, he takes good angles to the ball and he does a nice job of closing down cutback lanes. As a pass rusher, he is relentless, he does a good job setting up the offensive lineman to the outside before redirecting inside and he uses a lot of different moves to force the offensive lineman to move his feet in pass protection. He is no longer fast enough to consistently turn the corner as a pass rusher and he doesn't show great closing speed to the quarterback. Coleman doesn't explode out of his stance like he did earlier in his career and he needs to anticipate the snap count to have success shooting the inside gap. He lacks ideal lower body strength and he struggles to anchor working against double teams.

Name: Luther Elliss
Grade: 63 | Key
Alert: D

Comment:
He possesses good size and he can hold his ground at the point of attack when he plays with leverage. As a pass rusher, Ellis has the burst to shoot the inside gap and he shows good closing speed. He shows good lateral mobility, he doesn't waste a lot of motion and he runs line stunts fairly well. However, Ellis continues to have problems staying healthy, he is inconsistent and he is clearly on the downside of his career. He sustained a season-ending injury and he missed the season-opener with a calf injury last year.

Name: Raylee Johnson
Grade: 62 | Key
Alert: A

Comment:
Short, powerful player that can still get to the quarterback. Very good strength and leverage on his bull rush, can collapse the pocket. Good hustle pass rusher. Has counter moves off his initial contact. Can find and chase the quarterback. Will stay at home on the backside. Good anchor vs. the run, will hold the point, can control base and lateral blocks. Descending athlete, lacks speed around the edge. Aging player that showed he had some gas left in the tank while he was healthy. He could become a salary cap casualty after the season.

Name: Anton Palepoi
Grade: 62 | Key
Alert: None

Comment:
Good backside chase speed - shows a burst. Improved pass rush ability. Doesn't always rely on speed anymore - has improved his rush moves. Sets up his rush better - improved shake. Will force hurried throws. He is not a quick twitch DE. Gets knocked down in to the hole vs. the run. Lacks special play-making ability for a RDE.. His toughness, competes and motor were much improved. He is an under-sized DE that provides a solid spark off the bench.

It's interesting to note that top four ranked DL in our team, Pryce/Eku/Brown/Warren are all ranked higher than the players we fielded last year along the DL (don't know about Hayward). On paper it is a pretty big improvement considering we'll be fielding as many as three new starters who are more talented than what we had last year.

This gives me hope for this season. Man, if we could just get that DL firing then our LBs will absolutely clean up and with their range and closing speed, I see offenses having a really hard time running the ball against us whether it's inside or out.

Our pass rush will improve. I have no doubt on that considering we were only firing on one cyclinder last year with Hayward. How much it improves will be the big question.

One thing I feel good about is that Fatafehi is built and plays like a short area DT who can two gap and hold up blockers. This will ideal for a guy like Warren who should be asked to play more of a 3 gap system and shoot the gaps instead of clogging up the middle. This is what we need. A true 3 gap DT that is quick enough to get into the backfield and disrupt the pocket from inside while Brown/Pryce use the strength and bull rush to close off from the exterior.

On paper it looks like the ideal front four with Fatafehi 2 gap, Warren playing a 3 gap, Pryce using his bull rush one on one and Brown being quick and strong enough to split the OT/TE.

I can't wait for the season to get started.
