Default I Met Lelie And Schlereth

Today wasn't as cool in terms of news as my Marco Coleman unoffical interview, but it was still pretty cool.

I decided to take my dinner break and head to the food court. I was deciding what I wanted to eat since all the food there looked unappetitzing after so many frequent visits. Then I hear this loud voice of a man promising his kid he'll buy her "yummy Pizza" after they're done shopping. I look up and there's Mark Schlereth walking with his daughter. I must have snapped my head pretty quickly because he immediately looked right at me. I cracked a half smile and mouthed the words "I know you" not wanting to draw attention to him. Well he just raises his hand in the air and shouts "Hey! Thanks a bunch!" Guess he doesn't mind. Odd that he talks so much now and he used to be on the silent-as-the-grave O-line.

Anyway, so I'm walking over to Subway mulling over how many Broncos come to this mall and I walked up to order and got there right before another girl did. I let her go in front of me, because I'm old school, and as I did so, I noticed this tall black man in a white shirt and long shorts with super-white tennis shoes on standing behind me somewhat next to her.

I said "Are you together? You can go too..."

"Oh, no. I just got here. Go ahead."

As soon as he spoke I realized it was Ashley Lelie. I thought Holy crap! What do I do? I don't want to scare him off.. He was looking across the food court at Dick's sproting goods' Giant Screen that happened to be showing Randy Moss highlights.

I spoke aloud "Randy Moss. Man, he's pretty good. You like Football?"

"Oh yeah. I'm a big fan." he said.

"He's in the AFC west now." I said.

"Yeah (mumbled something) Raiders"

"I don't like the Raiders."

"Me either" he agreed. rofl

Then I had to order my sandwhich so I had to stop talking to him. After I paid for it, I waited at the register.

"You play, huh?"

"...What?"

"You're Lelie"

"Yeah" And then he smiled and looked away realizing I kind of punked him.

I said "Don't worry, I'm not going to harrass you or anything. I just want to say that you really came out strong last season and we're looking forward to seeing what you can do this year."

"Hey thanks a lot, man." he replied.

While I ate, several people cought on who he was and he started wolfing down his Turkey sandwhich as people begged for autographs.

I went to the video game shop to check the new College madden game. As I'm walking out, there's Lelie again!

I pulled him aside and said "What's the deal? Do you broncos all go the mall the same day?"

"What do you mean?"

"Well Mark schlereth walked by earlier."

"Awe, for real?"

"Yeah, pretty weird."

"That's funny."

"Hey good luck this year man. You're gonna rock."

"Thanks man."

Anyway that's the whole deal. Not anything amazing, but thought you'd like to know.

Someday I'll have to tell you all about the time I met Eric Warfield. I must have bought him 8 or 9 shots of wild turkey, before he picked his keys up off the bar and left.

Dick's sporting goods huh? I assume you work at Park Meadows? I love that mall.

It also amuses me, coming from a city like Albuquerque, that a mall could have valet parking. But I digress.

I realize you meet guys all the time, working in a jewlery place if I'm not mistaken, but to be that quick and your feet, and basically just start messing with Ash is freakin' funny. I'm not even going to lie, I would have so marked out.

What mall do you work at Kaylore? Park Medows? I saw Trevor there once, didn't bother him though. Had a very nice Benz that he was ridding in.

You're both right. I work at Park Meadows. It is a very nice mall, and the tax is actually lower than at Cherry Creek. Fairly good mix of people there as well for a higher end mall.

There's this big local food franchise here in Hawaii called L&L. I heard Ash bought one to operate in Denver. Anyone tried it or heard of it?

Yeah thats good for Ash. Hows it going SoCal? I guess he missed the plate lunches so much he had to buy one and bring it up with him. I'm just wondering if the stuff they serve there is the same as here.

Lelie is one of those guys who is almost embarrassed by his celebrity status.

I get the impression that he's a very private, kind of shy individual...not a lot of flash.

I'd give twenty bucks to watch a conversation...just a meeting between two opposites like Lelie & Terrell Owens.

He'll earn a Pro-Bowl spot one of these days & have to inter-act with some of the more...shall we call them... 'visible' players in today's game.

I do remember him saying something about Ray Lewis once and then only half-jokingly asking reporters not to repeat it to Lewis himself.

He's learning fast though...he seemed more demonstrative last year...and will likely be even more so in 2005.

That describes his demeanor pretty well. He was pretty quiet and subdued, and when I finally let him know I knew who he was he smiled and looked away. I thought it was because I kind of punked him, but maybe he's just shy.

Kaylore I'm glad Lelie was cool to you... I've met him several times and the part about him being shy is right on... the couple times I met him I asked him if I could take his picture and he said NO... I didn't even ask if I could take a picture with him, out of respect I asked if I could snap a picture, I could of just snapped the picture but I didn't... and both times he would not autograph anything either.. and it's not like there was a lot of people around either that would have mobbed him... it was just me & him

the most approachable bronco that I've met would have to be Champ, he is the nicest guy...

the only players I run into are redskins.....Lavar, nice guy but I was almost afraid to say hello since he could snap and break me in two. James Thrash is one of the nicest people I have ever met....

Nice story Kaylore. Whenver I actually get married to my girl I'll go buy a ring from you on the off chance I'll see a Bronco. Good to see that Lelie is humble about things and doesn't have a huge ego. Hopefully he'll be in a Bronco uni for a long long time.

Valet at Christmas time is pure gold I tell you!!

I saw Q about 2 months ago while I was in line at Chick-Fil-A (good damn that's some good chicken), nobody knew who he was. I asked how he was feeling, he said "I'm alright" sensing he did not want to talk I just wished him luck this year. I think Q may be more quiet than Lelie. Also, Q has HUGE legs. Like freaking tree stumps.

See Kaylore that was just perfect...not too long, add a dash of humor and load the rest with realism. Why can't a "paid writer" dream-up this kind of story. You gotta lot of born interviewer in ya!

I was actually taking a course for work out in Greenwood Village. I figured at lunch I would swing by the Team Store to hopefully catch a glimpse of Mini-Camp activity. As I was parking and walking up to the store I saw like 4 or 5 players. I got out of my car and walked toward the store. Coming towards me were Champ and Q. I felt like a tool being there during mini-camp so I was not going to bother them, but as they got closer to me they both said hi and a little small talk ensued. I was shocked that Q said anything as he seems so shy and all. It was very cool.

See now I've thought the opposite...when we were at the Charger game in Denver last year, Lelie signed my back but I though Champ acted very standoffish and he wouldn't sign autographs...but maybe it was because he had family with him?
