Default Broncos Sign Draft pick......ERNSTER...Errr...

Broncos sign kicker/punter Ernster

NFL.com wire reports

DENVER (July 7, 2005) -- Kicker/punter Paul Ernster, Denver's seventh-round draft choice, signed with the Broncos.

Ernster was picked 239th overall out of Northern Arizona, where he finished his four-year career with 221 points to rank third in school history while recording a 47.5-yard average on 60 punts.

He set a single-season school scoring record for kickers in 2003, compiling 101 points after converting 18 of 30 field-goal attempts went 47-for-49 on extra-point tries.

Terms of the contract were not revealed.

Any news on any of the other Drafties signing?

Wabbit says that Ernster was booting it just as far a Sauerbrun in camp. While that may be true, Todd has never been blocked and his accuracy is probably better. Nonetheless, I wonder if Paul is going to handle kick off duty, or at least be a less loud-mouthed protege' of Sauerbrun. Should Sauerbrun be a team cancer, we can look to Ernster, but honestly I'm really excited about seeing what Todd brings to our special teams.

Dito, it is weird to get excited about punting, but it is reassuring to know that you have a cocky steroid using meat head on yourside that can put the ball 47+ yards consistently.

I still think we keep him and he does the kicking off for us. Say what you will about us keeping two punters but as you seen by the offseason SP is a must and neither Jason or Todd will be kicking off so who else would it be.

Yeah I hope Myers can improve in his long snapping so that we can ditch Leach and keep Ernster as the kickoff specialist.

If the House gained enough weight back, he could try out for it?

Well I think Denver will find some way of making it happen. If he is as good as they say his is a kicking off then teams shouldn't be returning many kicks or punts against us which only helps the D out even more. I can't wait for the battles between the DL and DB though. Room is tight and they take up about 30 spots on our roster now. I wonder if things don't go well for Clarett shape wise if Denver could put him on the PUI list and have him be safe for the year.

Definitely. No way Maurice goes on the PS, its either Roster or Fake IR. He will make the roster though, he is a damn good player. Tuten and Turner will work with him.

Tuten sounded none to pleased with Mo on a radio interview I heard. Basically it sounded like he is out of shape and Tuten is going to work his ass hard in the rookie camps and training camp.

Mo will be practice squad.

There is a ZERO percent chance Maurice is put on the practice squad no matter what. Either active roster or Fake IR.

Up until now when our punter came out onto the field I got scared, not excited...except when Gordon was returning kicks.

I forgot thtat other teams can sign guys off other teams Practice squads, so perhaps you are correct. Either way, I don't see him being active for any games this year unless there are injuries.

No way we keep Ernster just for kickoffs. 3 kickers is a luxury we definitely can't afford.

Shanahan values roster spots too much to do it, and rightfully so!

No really, ERNSTER WILL MAKE THE ROSTER. I've been saying this since we drafted him, with some experience he will be better than sourbum.

I've also heard people comment on how Clarrett isn't necessarily out of shape... just not in football shape. He is more buff and bloated than cut and mean. It will take some work, but don't mistake that for Tuten being upset with him. He just knows that he has to chisle him and slim him out a bit. Carrying that much muscle will slow him down and more importantly cause him to wear down faster. Like SoCal said it's either the roster or he gets an injury card and goes down for the season and is protected. My guess is that he makes the roster though.
