LAS VEGAS (AP) - Boxer Martin Sanchez of Mexico died a day after he was knocked out in a super lightweight bout by Rustam Nugaev of Russia.

The 26-year-old fighter died Saturday at Valley Hospital Medical Center, hospital marketing director Gretchen Papez told The Associated Press on Sunday.

She said federal regulations prevented her from discussing specifics, and she referred further questions to Marc Ratner, executive director of the Nevada Athletic Commission. A call to Ratner was not immediately returned.

Sanchez was knocked out at 2:09 of the ninth round Friday night by a straight right in a bout at The Orleans. He had been bleeding from the nose and mouth but did not appear seriously injured as he left the ring.

Two physicians who examined Sanchez after the fight were satisfied he was fine, Ratner told the Las Vegas Review-Journal. A short time later Sanchez was seen walking strangely and was rushed by ambulance to the hospital, where he underwent emergency brain surgery, the paper added.

Sanchez, who had a 13-10 record with 10 knockouts, won the early rounds of the scheduled 10-round bout but Nugaev took over by the third.

The boxing death is the fifth in Nevada since 1994. The previous one involved Pedro Alcazar, who collapsed and died two days after being stopped by Fernando Montiel on June 22, 2002.

There has been at least 90 deaths since 93 in BOxing.

Probably the most brutal sport out there.

My step-son got into boxing by his Dad. It was stupid no sense to it. He always had to fight these Mexican kids who have been boxing since they were 6. He started doing pretty well but I finally got him out of it. This may sound raciest but white kids with a future don't need boxing. Minorities look at boxing as a way out or good training for the streets. It can get pretty ugly.

Not all in all true but I see where you're going with it. Unfortunately you're correct. Somebody will get offended and probably give you a verbal lashing. Thanks for being a man and saying what you really feel though. I can appreciate that.

Boxing is a great sport . you have to watch the Mexican fighters , they are tough ....
the deaths can be blamed on the corner men ........
you have to watch the matchups Protect your fighter .... Dont put a Rook in with a Roberto Duran ......

Figures you'd add your negativity. I think Atlas came out and said what he needed to say and made it clear that he wasn't trying to make it a racial matter. Then you turn around and try to flame the situation. You're the biggest instigator on this board and add nothing in terms of football only negativity.

I noticed that a few fights ago featuring some up and comming Russian fighters .......
they was over powering guys ......

It can't verified or denied exactly since we don't know, but the eastern Europeans are a bit crazy.

They are pretty hardcore in training. And how were their physique?

alot of it depends on how you was raised . if you were beat , you grow up either a coward or meaner then hell ..

My dad did it to me , I was 8 years old carring 5 gallon buckets of Water to the chickens ... got older , I was bucking bails of hay that wieghed more then me ..
