MSNBC Analyst Says Cooper Documents Reveal Karl Rove as Source in Plame Case

By E&P Staff

Published: July 01, 2005 11:30 PM ET

NEW YORK Now that Time Inc. has turned over documents to federal court, presumably revealing who its reporter, Matt Cooper, identified as his source in the Valerie Plame/CIA case, speculation runs rampant on the name of that source, and what might happen to him or her. Tonight, on the syndicated McLaughlin Group political talk show, Lawrence O'Donnell, senior MSNBC political analyst, claimed to know that name--and it is, according to him, top White House mastermind Karl Rove.

Here is the transcript of O'Donnell's remarks:

"What we're going to go to now in the next stage, when Matt Cooper's e-mails, within Time Magazine, are handed over to the grand jury, the ultimate revelation, probably within the week of who his source is.

"And I know I'm going to get pulled into the grand jury for saying this but the source of...for Matt Cooper was Karl Rove, and that will be revealed in this document dump that Time magazine's going to do with the grand jury."

Other panelists then joined in discussing whether, if true, this would suggest a perjury rap for Rove, if he told the grand jury he did not leak to Cooper.

Cooper and New York Times reporter Judith Miller, held in contempt for refusing to name sources, tried Friday to stay out of jail by arguing for home detention instead after Time Inc. surrendered its reporter's notes to a prosecutor.

Meanwhile, on Capitol Hill, Sen. Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J., said Friday that several unidentified Senate Republicans had placed a hold on a proposed resolution declaring support for Miller and Cooper.

``Cowards!'' Lautenberg said of the Republicans. ``Under the rules, they have a right to refuse to reveal who they are. Sound familiar?''

Lautenberg's resolution is co-sponsored by Sens. Richard Lugar (R-Ind.) and Christopher Dodd (D-Conn.) It says no purpose is served by imprisoning Miller and Cooper and that the First Amendment guarantees freedom of the press.

Karl Rove ........ cant say I am shocked , but Damn

I think it is a crock that they were going to or did lock up those two Time Mag reporters when it was Robert Novack's story to begin with.

I do have a question, was the CIA agent a covert field agent or anylist(sp?). I think she was an undercover agent, then Rove has to go to prison for a long a** time. If it is just perjury for lying to a grand jury. If it is just perjury, he should just cop a plea.

clarker, she was the wife of roving ambassador, and she was operating in the field without cover. The White house had a beef with the husband, because he could find a link between Iraq and one of those African countries( Nigeria?? ) on uranium transfer. IT IS a KArl Rowe type of move.

Plame Grand Jury Wants Records for Air Force One Phone Calls

From Editor and Publisher

http://tinyurl.com/dpvy6

Published: July 02, 2005 2:35 PM ET

NEW YORK Adding to the growing intrigue in the Plame case, the grand jury investigating the leak of the covert CIA operative's name subpoenaed has a wide range of White House documents, including records of telephone calls from Air Force One and information relating to an internal working group dealing with Iraq, government sources confirmed to CNN on Friday.

----

The subpoenaed information regarding telephone calls to and from Air Force One, sources said, covered July 7-12, while the president was on a trip to Africa. The requested transcript was from a briefing during that trip as well.

---

Many of the documents subpoenaed Friday relate to the White House Iraq Group, a little-known task force. Newsweek reported that the group was created in August 2002.

The Newsweek report cites an earlier Washington Post article that lists senior political adviser Karl Rove, Bush advisers Karen Hughes and Mary Matalin, national security adviser Condoleezza Rice and Vice President Dick Cheney among the group's members.

It'll be interesting to see where this goes... most of the stuff i have read so far seems pretty Damning. Having said that I have a feeling there is alot more to this. As a side note, how does one subpoena Air Force one phone records, but while they have them someone should look and see if Jeff Gannon's cell numbers is on there .

I think it still amazing that someone wanted to make a political point, they actual put a life at risk and removed a intelligence asset. I sure that they justified it in thier minds, saying that the greater good was meet, because got Saddam.

Well if she was operating without cover, then I don't know how he could be charged with blowing her cover. That doesn't make sense to me. But he could still and probably should get the perjury charge if he lied about it to a grand jury.

Without cover meant that why she was working on offical business, but she was "publically" not working for the government, if she was caught she was on her own.

They not only outed a covert CIA op, (who, ironically, was working on tracking WMD) they endangered the life of every other intelligence asset who knew her - all for petty personal revenge/political payback.

That's BushCo "ethics" for you.

Second Source Confirms Claim that Karl Rove Exposed a CIA Operative Who Specialized in Tracking the Illicit Trade of WMD AT THE SAME TIME Rove Was Masterminding a Propaganda Campaign Claiming We Went to War With Iraq Because of Illicit WMDs. If True, The Man Betrayed the National Security Interests of the USA.

I have a funny suspicion some poor S.O.B. of an intern is going to take the fall for this. Top white house official / presidential advisor usually keep you out of the hottest of water.

Yep.

As much as I'd like to (figuratively speaking) uncork the champagne in anticipation of Rove's appearance in an orange jumpsuit on the five o'clock news, I just don't think it's ever gonna happen. The odds are no better than the likelihood that Ken Lay will ever spend one second behind bars.

He/they will find a way to slime out of this just like everything else.

It's the "golden rule."

For Trifecta Boy and the "untouchables" in his crime family, 9/11 was the gift that just keeps on giving.

The sad thing is, even if Bush were to be impeached and Rove were to end up sharing a cell with Tyrone, the right-wing freaks who are still supporting BushCo would no doubt continue to call you a traitor and an America-hater for mentioning any or all of the above crimes and scandals.

Sane/rational does not = refusing to acknowledge similarities between Smirk and Hitler where they exist (to say nothing of the numerous ties between the Bush family and the Nazis which are matters of public record.)
