Default Nuggets could land shooting guard

For the Nuggets fans on here. I think Finley would be awesome for the Nugs and help take them to the next level.

not sure I get this right, but does this mean finley if waived would get all his 52 million and be able to sign w/ someone new for even more money? that would be hilarious, its like the route to being massively wealthy goes through being massively overpaid.

another link with nugs possibilites...Bobby Simmons, Latrell Sprewell, and Joe Johnson. but johnson will probably re-up since they got rid of Q-rich.

It is ridiculous how much money these guys make. I can't believe how teams can just throw money away.

Yes, he would still get all of his 52 million owed to him. And yes, Finley could sign with another team & make more money.

Denver jockeying for McCants chance
By Adam Thompson and Marc J. Spears
Denver Post Staff Writers

Rashad McCants, coming off a national title at North Carolina, played in the 2004 NCAA Tournament at the Pepsi Center. The 6-foot-4 guard will be back if the Nuggets draft him. (Post / Hyoung Chang )

Rashad McCants likes the Nuggets.

"It doesn't matter where I play as long as I can be part of the NBA, but it would be a great opportunity to play with my friend Carmelo Anthony," the North Carolina shooting guard said of his chances of landing with Denver in tonight's NBA draft.

The Nuggets like McCants. Whether they like him enough to try to hoist themselves above the 20th and 22nd picks in the draft to land him - or whether they need to - remains to be seen.

"He's a talented guy," assistant general manager David Fredman said. "He's a guy that we're discussing. I can't really talk any more than that."

Buzz around the league Monday had general manager Kiki Vandeweghe talking with teams picking in the low teens about a possible swap. McCants said Monday he has seen special interest from the Nuggets, Los Angeles Clippers and Minnesota. Indiana also is interested in acquiring a shooting guard to lessen the loss of Reggie Miller. The Pacers, now slated to pick 17th, are reportedly trying to move up.

But Fredman said Denver is unlikely to pull off a trade before the draft begins and that the team has not necessarily set its heart on climbing up.

"I'm sure we've talked to every team in the league about various scenarios, but we're not close to anything," he said, adding, "We've always been active since we've been around here this time of year and around trade deadlines. It's just exploring all of our options."

Charlotte general manager Bernie Bickerstaff, whose team owns the 13th pick, suggested Monday that nothing was doing on his end.

"We have had plenty of inquiries on 13 - it's a pretty valuable pick - teams wanting to move up to that area," he said. "And we just haven't found anything that we can get romantically involved with."

If the Nuggets do stand pat, Fredman said he believes the team still can land a contributor, pointing to Josh Howard, the Dallas forward who went 29th in the 2003 draft.

"There is a great guy there," Fredman said. "It's up to us to identify him. But realistically, I'm talking personally and I've told Coach (George) Karl, I'm not sure there's any more than 10 of these guys I could personally recommend in this draft and say, 'This guy will be in your rotation, or any playoff team's rotation.' But that doesn't mean there are not good prospects or not guys there who will later prove to be good NBA player.

Footnotes

The Minnesota Timberwolves are in contract negotiations with Nuggets assistant Rex Kalamian for a similar position with their franchise. Kalamian has a long relationship with new Wolves coach Dwane Casey. ...

The Los Angeles Lakers have asked permission to talk to Nuggets assistant Chip Engelland, a Los Angeles native.

"I know Kiki's had a conversation with them," Fredman said of the Lakers. "I think he's going to deal with a lot of those matters after the draft." ...

Speaking from the NBA players association meeting in Las Vegas on Monday, Nuggets guard Earl Boykins said of the league's new collective bargaining agreement: "I'm happy. The union did a great job of working things out."

For $5 million a year Finley would be a great pickup but for the $33 million a year that it will cost the Mavericks to keep him, it's not worth it.

GS, I can't figure out your McCants obsession. You are the only UNC fan I know that likes McCants. Everyone else talks about how spoiled and how much of a cancer he is. Am I missing something? I'm honestly confused here.

Bobby Simmons would be the ideal. I'd freak out if we could land him as he's exactly what we need. That said, it won't happen. The Clips want to keep him (supposedly) and he is restricted. Sign & Trade is the only possibility.

I understand why people think he is a cancer, but Roy Williams had him playing great ball last year. You can't knock the kid on talent, if there wasn't so much baggage with him, he would prob be a top 5 pick. I think that the nuggs have the type of coach in George Karl that can make McCants into the player that he should be. I'll admit that it is a risky pick, but if he ever get's the mental part down, the sky is the limit. I agree that simmons would be a perfect addition though.

Talent wise, he might be the #1 pick. But the guy is insane. I've seen the Nuggets take enough "chances" in the draft. I want a solid pick. Give me a Roko Ukic or Francisco Garcia.

I think McCants will be fine eventually. So what if he is insane. You don't win an NBA title by being a perfect person or winning a personality contest. There is enough veterans on the team to keep the kid in line.

According to Armstrong and a sub guest host on the radio yesterday, there is already a problem in the locker room for the Nuggets. They mentioned a problem between Miller and Anthony.

Don't be surprised to see the Nuggets take Wayne Simien at #22. Jerry Schemmel, the voice of the Nuggets, has radio friends here in Topeka and have told them that the Nuggets are looking at him...

Well you can take comfort in the fact that UNC will be lucky to win 15 games next year. I actually recieved an offer from Roy Williams to walk on as a PG. I then had to tell him that I have been drinking a lot of beer for the past decade and am really out of shape. He told me the offer still stands.
