Isnt he primarily a 3-4 guy though?

Thats right you guys are gonna do both. He is pretty old but not bad.

How are the rookies looking (esp Hawthorne) ?

I'm starting to think Washington gets waived now.

Atlanta used a 4-3 last season I think....

It's all sunshine and roses coming out of Oakland, but who the hell knows SoCal? They need to put pads on and bang heads and see how it shakes out. There are enough guys now to at least have competition at many positions.

From what I can gather we're running more of a Baltimore/New England type 3-4 with big outside backers setting the edge against the run almost like a 5-2.

3-4 Sam LB looks like it will be Ty Brayton playing that Suggs role
Will LB looks like it will be Sam Williams playing the Boulware role.

(Note I am making positional comparisons only, not comparing talent level)

Not the Pittsburgh type where you're disquising who the 4th rusher will be.

Burgess is only going to play 4-3, nickel, and dime RDE. I guess they're afraid he's going to break.

How many DTs are they going to sign? This guy is old and was thinking about retiring. It's a decent signing, because there isn't much there at this point. But I wouldn't call this guy an impact player.

If it's financially feasible to release him, this guy may supplant Ted Washington.

Heck, this guy may not stick, he only got 25 grand for a signing bonus.

Stepper wants his Aggie though

Sam Williams is an interesting player. He had alot of upside coming out of Fresno State as a LB. I remember reading a couple years ago, Al brought him in for a personal workout as a DE and absolutely loved him. Told him right then and there he would draft him. I really think if Brayton is going to be used as a 3-4 OLB again, he is again going to struggle and will not look like his 2002 form anytime soon. He is a 4-3 left end. Period.

I really think Oakland should be a pure 4-3 team and they should keep Washington. He can take up space and keep attention away from Hawthorne (who should lead the division in TFL). I think Sapp is the one, if financially feasible, who should be released.

Well, as a poster smarter than I, on another board I go to, pointed out, Brayton only looked like crap after we ran out of weakside Linebackers and stuck him over there.

If all he has to do is set the edge against the run, cover the short flat, or get after the QB if he's uncovered, it's no different than what slow assed Willie McGinnest does in New England. It's not much different than playing 4-3 RDE in a zone blitzing scheme like Philly.

Another problem is now this is his third position in as many years. I just think you can get optimum production from him as a 4-3 weakside DE. Not dropping him into coverage etc. He does have the requisite weight in the 260s for a 34 OLB but i still think he is better at end.

Jasper was a decent pick up, but he is also old and will probably not give the raiders much help at all, their d-line still looks weak, if their lucky burgess will play a bigger role than they first assumed.

I think Raider fans will be pleasantly surprised to see immediate contributions from their rookie class on defense. Hawthorne will start and have a good rookie season. I think Morrison will find his way into the lineup at some point in the year as well. Im not sold on either of those corners though. I really feel that in the second round they missed the boat by going for Stanford Routt over a guy like Kevin Burnett, who could provide a much needed infusion of speed and skill at the LB position or one of the remaining DL. Nonetheless, i am grateful that they got Routt if for no other reason that it prevented Shanny from getting him, which was a strong possibility considering his comments after the draft re: Routt and some of the things leaking out a few days before regarding Denver's strong interest.

Who knows, NE made a bunch of stiff white guys into a solid LB corps.

They can probably afford to take the Sheldon Brown, Lito Shepard approach with the corners. Neither HAS to play right away and Routt is probably a 3 year project if he pans out at all.

If the raiders actually figured out that they should go with a 4-3 the majority of the time and not the 3-4 they might actually stop a drive or two this year.
