Default Broncos | Tight Ends to go Downfield More Often?

Broncos | Tight Ends to go Downfield More Often?
Sun, 19 Jun 2005 18:32:45 -0700

Patrick Saunders, writing for the Sporting News, reports the Denver Broncos are expected to use TEs Jeb Putzier, Stephen Alexander and Nate Jackson as downfield targets more often this year, rather than as dump-off targets or safety valves. All three can beat linebackers in coverage. Putzier, in particular, is ready to become the kind of downfield threat TE Shannon Sharpe used to be.

I've been wondering if this was the direction the Broncos were going to go.

I know they loved Carswell is the dump-off role, if only because he was such a load to bring down...but now, it seems the staff is fielding a 'designer' TE...designed for the Bronco offense that is.

Sharpe created such match-up headaches, I have to believe the coaches long for the old days...despite Sharpe's mediocre blocking.

Notice, the team has stressed developing Putzier's blocking skills as a priority before giving him more playing time. Stephen Alexander is also just an ok blocker, who will likely see considerable emphasis on his blocking technique in camp as well.

So, yeah, I suspect the coaches are looking at more of an enhanced offensive role from the TE's, a la Shannon Sharpe, or something close...but, they also want effective blocking from the position as well.

He wont be covering Denver TEs unless its a two TE set since he is on the weakside. If they move him over to neutralize the Putz, we'll audible to a lead and run right at him.

DJ has been covering tight ends in the OTAs. He's tailor made for such a role.

Putz sucks anyway.

Is that why he led the AFC in YPC for TEs? Johnson covering TEs in all the OTAs? Gunther would be an idiot to put him at Sam.

Funny how you've got this guy headed to Canton before he's ever played an NFL snap.

But wait, I forgot, he looked good in non-contact drills. Get his Hall Of Fame speech ready.

I dunno, I'm not too worried about Jeb vs DJ. I'm more worried about Antonio Gates.

Bob's feeling feisty tonight. How cute.

Funny how you keep referring to non-contact drills as if they're gospel. But I guess you need something to justify all the Derrick Johnson knob slobbering you've been doing.

By the way, are the Chefs actually gonna run tackling drills this year? Or has Gunther already magically fixed that little problem?

So let's see, you're saying that Gates is better than Putz? Wow, now you're really going out on a limb.

They are not going to run tackling drills but they are going to scrimage with one flag on instead of two.

DJ's going to be all over the field. I saw both of our OLBs switch sides last year. Confining an enigmatic talent like DJ to one side of the field is stupid. He should be allowed to roam free, like a gazelle.

Enigmatic talent? He's a speed backer with a knack for jarring the ball loose. Not too much mystery there.

Let's just see if he can shed blockers at the NFL level. Word is that he had some trouble with that in college.

You've got to be kidding me.

Just when you started to make some sense...from time to time...in a limited discussion, lacking any real substance and with some reservations, you come off with a seriously dumb-ass statement like this??

If there is anyone the Broncos are looking at on the offense for a break-out year, it will be Putzier.

File this one with;
"phhht, Griffin will never gain a 100 yards against our defense"

&

"Lelie is a bust"

Broncos offense will be something to watch, everyone has at least 2 years together, only major change is at RG. 83 more days till opening kickoff...

No, you see, your statement was "Puzier sucks" 'Bob

The FACT is he's a relatively productive, albeit young player who, potentially could become a highly productive, serious on-the-field mis-match in the mold of Shannon Sharpe.

SO, he doesn't suck 'Bob...you're flat assed, face down wrong from the start, you see.

Unproven...maybe, but that wasn't your statement, was it 'Bob?

So we should have reservations about Putzier, who's already shown that he has the ability to be productive at the NFL level, but we should already classify Derrick Johnson, a rookie who hasn't even strapped on pads for camp yet, as a star?

Yeah. Sure.

Bob do you have any idea what an idiot you look like saying this and casting doubt on a veteran on the bubble like Putz, and yet in the SAME THREAD homering away on a ROOKIE in Derrick Johnson? No...of course you don't.
